Why Northern Lights?

Why have we got a forum called Northern Lights on the WhiteBallProject which is predominantly about Ilkeston Town Football Club?

As many people know I have been in the process of emigrating to the North East for the last year. Well all being well it should really happen in September. I will not have to answer the question “Have you not gone yet?” over and over again. I will miss watching Ilkeston Town because I have been doing it for well… a very long time. I will miss the people, the gossip and mostly just watching “Ilson”. Anyway I will be back regularly and if we cannot settle on the idyllic Northumberland coast we may be back.

The purpose of this forum is then to chronicle my experience of the North-East non league football world. Up until recently my knowledge of football up north was centered around the passionate Newcastle United fans, Sunderland and their 1973 FA Cup win, the sad story of Gateshead and the fact that the northern non-league teams did well in the FA Vase because they refused to climb the pyramid and leave the Northern League. I know now some of these preconceived ideas are wrong but some are not too far of the mark.

My closest non-league club will be Alnwick Town who play in the Northern Alliance. I have been in the area many times during the football season and have yet to see a game at St James Park. Weather and odd fixture scheduling have always defeated my efforts to pul in a game. Higher up the pyramid Morpeth Town are at the same level as Ilkeston Town and have a reputation as a no nonsense northern outfit. I have never seen them play so they will be a new one for me. Then there is Blyth Spartans whose ground I have visited and I did actually see a game there. They are still in the National League North but have struggled towards the bottom of the league in recent seasons. Ashington are a club I am fascinated by and not just for their link to the Charltons but the fact they have played at nearly every level possible, even the Football League, and next season they will have the legendary Robbie Dale playing for them.

I am determined to prove that there is more to Northumberland than beautiful beaches and incredibly friendly locals. However if there is not I am sure I will be able to cope!

Re: Why Northern Lights?

Well a couple of weeks into this blog and maybe its time to see how the Northern Lights teams are faring.

Newcastle United have had a rebirth under controversial ownership and then had the gall to beat and to be honest out play my “other” club Nottingham Forest. To be fair to the Toon I was a Newcastle United fan for one season at the end of the sixties when they won the Fairs Cup. I did a primary school project based on the team which I still have somewhere. Ironically it’s packed somewhere waiting to travel up north with all my other football books.

Sunderland was my Grannie’s birthplace and although they do not know it yet I do have relatives there. Miriam Foster Fairbairn left the north and several children for a new life down south. I do know she lived on Bede Street near Roker Park so I have always had a soft spot for the Mackems. They are unbeaten in three games in their first season back in the Championship so its another good start.

Gateshead are another newly promoted team after a rough few years struggling and they have not lost any of their opening games but on the other hand they have not won any either. So it looks like a season to just survive at step one of the non-league pyramid. It’s called a season of consolidation if you want to put a more positive spin on it.

Next are Blyth Spartans who have started by losing both games and their manager after only two weeks. Blyth could be in for a very difficult season. If they get relegated they may be facing Morpeth Town in the Northern Premier League. That however will only happen if Morpeth can win some games as they are like Blyth pointless so far. To be fair they have only played one game so it is probably a bit early to write them off.

Further down the pyramid we have North Shields who got a point from their first game against Lincoln United and then we come to Ashington a town with a massive football pedigree including the Charltons, the Milburns and a team that once graced the Football League. They are now in the Northern League and have started the season in style winning all four of their games, scoring sixteen goals and only conceding two. They sit proudly at the top of the league and although it is still very early they will be hoping to recapture former glories this season.

At this point we are getting to the teams who despite having a history of success are languishing at step seven. Alnwick Town are one of these teams and they are the team who I am most likely to be watching, as there ground is only minutes from where I will be living. They have started by drawing two games and losing one. I cannot at this stage work out whether this is better or worse than their fan base expected as they do not, like Ilson fans, air their views on social media. So it is a fair start maybe, probably or maybe not.

No doubt I will find out more at the end of September.

Re: Why Northern Lights?

Part 3
Still trying to move to Northumberland!

Came up for a week to see how far the builders are getting on with the house.

A bonus is that I would get a chance to see my new local non-league team Alnwick Town in the flesh. We arrived in Alnwick at the excellent Barter Books just in time to fill up with an excellent fish finger sandwich. It’s a short walk down the Waggon Way to St James Park the home of Alnwick Town. It is an old fashioned ground with plenty of charm even in the driving rain. The game is attended by a decent crowd for step seven or eight. The football is basic and at times robust but Alnwick take the lead and are two up at half-time. I meet the Alnwick secretary at half time and a very friendly gentleman he was too. At the start of the second half I spot a man taking photographs and make a bee-line for him as the sun has now started to shine. Another friendly and helpful gentleman who is a great advert for Alnwock Town. Things are going really well! I’ve met two great locals and Alnwick are now 3-1 and it’s looking like they are getting to win their first game of the season. I decide at this point to return to Barter Books to rescue my wife who has had to spend the afternoon shopping in Alnwick. However Percy Main Amateurs have not read the script and in my absence they pull back two late goals to deny the ‘Nick their first three point haul of the season.

Things get worse Alnwick lose again at home on Wednesday night and the builders report that our house will not be ready till October! However on the plus side and it is a very big plus we have a great week in Warkworth in what has been a very enjoyable research trip!

Re: Why Northern Lights?

Part Four The longest house move in living memory

A full fifteen months after we originally bought our house we have finally moved in. I can’t face explaining the twists and turns of the move so I will concentrate on the important stuff Football! As usual Alnwick Town’s game on my first Saturday in Alnwick was postponed due to a frozen pitch. Not a surprise as most of the games I have tried to watch there have been cancelled. In fact in all the many times I have holidayed up here during the football season I have only seen one game. Looking on the bright side I can see the Alnwick Town Juniors clubs 4G pitch out the kitchen window as I type this drivel. The excellent World Cup final that hopefully you all watched last night has made up for the lack of non league action. The game even distracted me from updating the Ilkeston Town stats.
I have no idea when I will get the chance to watch live football again as the North East appear to have an unofficial mid winter break. It could be Alnwick Town or I might venture out to Morpeth Town, Ashington or even Blyth Spartans.

Re: Why Northern Lights?

Part Five 65 Days as a Northerner!
I have now been in Northumberland for nearly 65 days and yes I do miss Ilkeston Town Football Club. I had planned to travel the length and breadth of Northumberland to take in many football matches. However due to having a heavy and prolonged cold and the friendliness of my new local club Alnwick Town I have only seen Morpeth Town and Alnwick.

Alnwick are a very old club with a strong tradition. They play at St James Park and in black and white stripes. However it is somewhat easier to see a game at the Alnwick version than the bigger cousins down the A1 and there are no issues of dubious middle eastern money at the theatre of dreams on Weavers Way. I have been to two home games which were cancelled due to the opposition being unable to raise a team. One of them Whitley Bay Reserves probably wished that they had not made the effort because in the re arranged game this Saturday they lost 11-0. To be honest some of their players should have not been on the same pitch as the seasoned semi pros of Alnwick. Alnwick’s top scorer Jamie Clarke is not the love child of Gazza has some one suggested last week. He does however not run around much when he does not have the ball but when his colleagues feed him he is dynamite. He is also a free kick specialist hence the Gazza remarks. Unfortunately Jamie popped a hammie against Whitley Bay on Saturday after scoring a first half hat trick. His replacement the ever green Michael Laws did however score four second half goals. Not bad for player who seems to prefer playing at centre half. Anyway the Alnwick Town chairman Tommy calls me their lucky mascot as they have not dropped a point since I emigrated to Northumberland. I could not tell him that I would not be there as I am returning to Ilkeston for ten days holiday! (and a family wedding!). If they lose to Rothbury next week a team two divisions below them in the League Cup I will suggest they should have made me an offer I could not have refused to stay.

As a result of their recent run of form Alnwick have applied to rejoin the Northern League. However they are a long way behind the big money team Newcastle Blue Star. And as a local wag said they may need to rely on a number of teams going bust if they are to get promoted. Or I think that that’s what he said as they don’t speak Ilson up here youth!

Re: Why Northern Lights?

NORTHERN LIGHTS Part Six -  Semi Final Magic!

Since I last updated Alnwick Town have reached the Semi Final of the League Cup or the Reeves Investment Services George Dobbins League Cup to give its full and rather long winded title. The Wick should have played their semi final against Willington Quay last week but it was surprisingly postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. In the final they will play Burradon and New Fordley who sound like they are straight out of Lord of the Rings but play near Cramlingham and are second in the league behind Newcastle Blue Star. Alnwick have already played Burradon in the league and beat them quite comfortable 4-1 in a bizarre game where the home side had at least three players sent off. I say at least three because they use a sib bin system up here and its difficult to know who has been sent off. Allegedly the Burradon manager was sent off and sent to the changing rooms. He reluctantly left but put a different jacket on and returned only to be sent off a second time. The ref a Mr Peter Osgood even had to put with being locked out the changing rooms obviously by accident. I wonder what mark he got out of ten?

I have also been to watch the Alnwick Town Development team play at the 4G that I can see from my office (fourth bedroom). They played Blyth Rangers who were second but the Devs won easily 4-0 or 5-0. The ref in this game was a young lad who had a really good game except for one ludicrous decision when he sent a Blyth off for a challenge that in my opinion did not even warrant a free-kick and I was only six yards away from the incident. When the game was all bot won Blyth used their subs quota by bringing what appeared to be their back room staff. Some of these lads have seen better days physically and the shirts were being stretched to their limits. The Devs are a sort of reserve team but oddly non of there are registered to play for the first team and like wise none of the first team are registered to play for the Devs. Its an odd set up and to all sense and purpose they are two completely separate clubs, Or are they?

Around the region Morpeth Town look like they will avoid relegation but Blyth Spartans looked doomed. Ashington’s title push has wavered so it appears that it is up to Newcastle United to fly the flag for the North of the Tyne! However just for my neighbour Chris I must mention South Shields who have finally gained promotion to the National League North by winning the Northern Premier League premier Division by a good margin after a nervous few weeks in April. All I need now is for Ilkeston Town to be transferred to the Northern Premier league so that I can watch them at Morpeth Town!

Re: Why Northern Lights?

NORTHERN LIGHTS  Part Seven – Cup Fever!

Alnwick Town finished the season in great style by winning the Reeves Investment Services George Dobbins League Cup with a fine win over second placed Burradon and New Fordley. In the league they eventually finished fourth after a great from December onwards that saw them only lose one game. Unfortunately I missed most of the end of season excitement after eventually succumbing to the dreaded Covid which laid me low for a number of weeks. Overall however it was noted as one of Alnwick’s best season for some time and they will be looking to push for the title next season as they have shown that they could beat all the top teams. Newcastle Blue Star won the title by a considerable margin and were deservedly promoted to the Northern League Division One. They are a very well club and are much more professional than most teams at this level.

The Alnwick Town Development team just failed to win the title but like the first team had a very successful season. It is however a mystery to me why none of these players get a chance to show what they can do at a higher level. Elsewhere both Blyth Spartans and Morpeth Town managed to avoid relegation but Ashington gained promotion to the Northern League Premier Division after finishing second in Division One.

Season 2023-24 will be my first full campaign up north and I think I have got a taste of how things run up here. In the Northern Football Alliance some of the facilities are primitive compared with down south but the standard of football is surprisingly high. The attendances are generally lower but the clubs and supporters are much friendlier. I can’t wait for the new season to start.
