Sat 13 April : Ashton United v Ilkeston Town : ko 3pm

.
Next up we have a chance to put a spanner in the promotion hopes of Ashton United.

Ashton are very much in form having won 7 of there last 8 matches taking them to just outside the playoff places. This run of form includes a 5-2 win at Radcliffe.

Of all the playoff chasers, Ashton have probably the least difficult run in so they will be reasonably confident of finishing in the top five. They have to play Matlock (A) on Tuesday night then, Ilkeston (H), Stafford (A), and Marine (H).

Ashton’s record is :      P36, W18, D10, L8, F69, A53, Points 64
Their home record is:   P18, W11, D4,  L3,  F39. A21, Points 37

Ashton will be aware of Ilkeston’s decent away record: P17, W8, D1, L8, F23, A29, Points 25

Ashton do not enjoy good support. Their average gate is 378. This includes big attendances of 1007 against FC United, 764 against Macclesfield 641 against Hyde and 541 against Radcliffe.
The majority of their gates have been under 300

.

You may be wondering how Ashton United have such a successful team pushing for a playoff spot when their gate income is so low. Part of the answer is that they are expert in obtaining grants.
The club is run along side a charity they have formed called "Ashton United in the Community".
The football club apply for football related grants and the Charity apply for non-football related grants available to registered charities which can be used to help the football club.
For example, a grant to provide training for their stewards in such skills as leadership and first aid which might help them secure employment. The stewards then work for free on match days as it's part of their training. They have also secured grants to train people in catering and they do the catering on match days as part of their training.

Ashton United Empowers Volunteers With Trident Grant For Community Challenges

“Ashton United in the Community is an anchor charity in our community.  While it is a separate entity from the club, we work hand in glove."

Before they host Ilkeston, Ashton travel to Matlock hoping to enhance their playoff chances.
Ashton have won their last three matches
Matlock have lost their last five.

So it's a home banker!  Matlock to win

Tuesday Night Football: score updates from 7 45pm

Also playing Tuesday night Guiseley v Worksop - Both are outsiders in the play off race and neither can afford to drop points
And Macclesfield travel to Bamber Bridge.

Unfortunately Ashton's match tonight at Matlock is off due to waterlogged pitch
And so are the other two matches in our league.

I think we have to look for a solution to reduce the number of matches being postponed

???   Start the season a week earlier or have midweek fixtures every week up until October.

???   If a match is postponed twice due to the pitch being unplayable: the subsequent rearanged match is to be played on the away team's ground

Re: Sat 13 April : Ashton United v Ilkeston Town : ko 3pm

.
If we could pull off a win at Ashton then there is a possibility that by the end of the season we will have scored more points away than home
At present we have 26 points from 19 home matches and 25 points from 17 away matches.

Our 3 remaining away matches are at Ashton, Bamber Bridge and Warrington

Ashton United is a very tough fixture because they are pushing for a  playoff place and have won their last three. We ought to be able to get a result at Bamber Bridge if their pitch dries out
Our final away match is at Warrington Rylands who, like Ashton are, playoff contenders. Rylands need five more points to be certain of a playoff place from their 3 remaining matches against Lancaster, Worksop and Ilkeston. But if Ilkeston beat Ashton this Saturday then Rylands need only 2 more points.

A bit harsh on teams who cannot afford 4G pitches perhaps. Up in Northumberland the Northern Football Alliance have a very odd system where they do not release fixtures until sometimes just a week before the games are played. Alnwick were playing twice a week at the start of the season so by the end of September they were a third of their through their fixtures. They then only played seven league games between the end of September and the end of March but played in numerous Cup competitions. They have now have a fixture backlog and having to pull in three and four games a week

It’s League Match Day No 37. Only 3 matches left after this one.

We’re 5 matches unbeaten so let’s see if we can continue this sequence until the end of the season. All the pressure is on Ashton United who are having their best season since re-joining the NPL in 2019 and are chasing a playoff spot with 64 points so far.
They have not previously had a top half finish.
Their best finish was 2022-23 season when they finished in 14th place with 53 points from 42 matches.

Corner to Ashton.  Now corner on the other side. Its cleared. Great run forward by Walker but no one on the end of his cross.   Then Cursons fires over the bar.      0-0.   7 mins

Corner Ilkeston. It's clear as far as Dec,. Dec's cross held by Ashton keeper.  Brilliant save by bCooper denies Ilkeston the lead.  Ilkeston on top just now.           0-0.     11 mins

Re: Sat 13 April : Ashton United v Ilkeston Town : ko 3pm

Scramble in the Ashton goalmouth but they get away with it. Gilchrist misses an excellent chance for Ashton .
Walker involved in a 50-50 challenge  with an Ashton's Byrne. Byrne comes off worst and Walker gets a yellow. Ridiculous.  A player from each side booked in the handbags that followed.
0-0.       20 mins

Cooper comes out of his goal and misses the ball  then fouls an Ilkeston player . Nothing given.   It's all happening here. Both sets of fans feeling decisions are going against them. Minkley fouls Adams who was racing forward. The free kick goes wide.          0-0.   28 mins

Goal. Ilkeston Wafula follows up after two brilliant saves by Cooper.   ilkeston deservedly ahead.    1-0.     31 mins

Cursons made the goal with a great interception, He drove forward and Cooper saved his effort but Wafula was there. Wafula's first shot was saved but he followed up to finally beat Cooper

It's very lively in the stand as well as on the pitch.  It's difficult for the ref in these conditions.
Ref just spoke to the Ashton  bench. Now he's speaking to Deaks.      1-0 to ilkeston   39 mins

Yates clearance hits an Ashton player but the ball comes straight back to Yates. Lucky. Another scramble in the Ashton box but Ilkeston can't get the ball over the line.        1-0.     42 mins
