Highgate United
Highgate are delighted to announce that Paul Smith has agreed to join them as joint manager along side Ashley Pulisciano. Smith recently masterminded back to back promotions for rivals Bromsgrove Sporting. Following boardroom differences, Smith stepped down from his position at the Victoria Ground towards the end of last season, but the side he had helped to assemble still went on to win the MFL Premier. "We've really got plans to push this club forward and Smudger is definitely the man to help do that. We were aware that Paul would have countless offers, after all he's highly respected, and rightly so. I'm really pleased he's agreed to come on board."

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

South Normanton Athletic
Nicknamed the Shiners, South Normanton are the only side north of Ilkeston in the MFL Premier and last season they only just avoided relegation finishing with 43 point from 42 games. Marcus Tudgay was their top scorer with 25 goals from 29 games.  Like many teams South Normanton ended up playing two midweek games every week and  after losing 3-1 at fellow relegation fighters, Shawbury United, they needed one point from their last two games to ensure Step 5 survival. Their remaining games were against two of the top sides, Worcester City (4th) at home and Coleshill Town (2nd) away. It was a terrific effort by the Shiners to be holding Worcester to 0-0 at half time and then they surprisingly took the lead in the second half. Worcester responded and South Normanton had to defend desperately. They held out until the 90th  minute when Worcester finally scored leaving the Shiners a nervy three minutes added time to hang on for the point they needed.  There were huge protests from the Worcester players when  Normanton were awarded a penalty. Tudgay stepped up and scored causing joyous scenes of celebration. They lost their final match at promoted Coleshill 4-0 but they had survived.

Shepshed Dynamo
Damien Beckford-Quailey has been appointed new first team manager. Dynamo finished 7th last season with 63 points from their 42 games. Top scorer was Shay Brennan with 35 goals. Brennan was the second highest scorer in the MFL Premier. (Marco Addagio of Highgate United was top scorer with 37). Shepdshed's average attendance at Butthole Lane last year was 150.

Long Eaton United
Our Erewash neighbours finished 9th last season with 61 points after winning their last three matches. Zak Goodson was top sorer with 16. Tom Gamblen played the highest number of games (43) scoring 9 goals.  Several other ex Ilkeston FC players  turned out for Long Eaton including Scott Low (40 appearances), Charlie Scanlon (35  appearances) and Ryan Head (30 appearances).

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

Dunkirk
Dunkirk were promoted from the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League which was widely predicted to be where Ilkeston would play next season . They finished with 89 points from 40 matches as did Anstey Nomads. Dunkirk claimed the promotion spot by virtue of a better goal difference. They needed a point from their final match and drew a nervy game against Selston 3-3.  Dunkirk's average attendance at Lenton Lane was 61. After one of the Club's most successful reigns in charge, managers David Robinson, Craig Clark and Jimmy Albans resigned the end of last season. It was announced on 26 May that Chris North would be stepping up to become first team manager with Daryll Thomas as joint manager / coach.  23 days later on 18 June it was announced that Will Andrew was the new first team manager.

Coventry Sphinx
Coventry Sphinx finished 10th last season with 60 points from 42 games. They rely heavily on Ryan Harkin to score their goals and he was their top scorer last season with 28 league goals from 40 league appearances. The only other player to reach double figure was Jamie Towers with 11 league goals.

Coventry United
Coventry United play at Butts Park Arena Capacity 4000 (3000 seats in the East Stand). The ground is only a short walk from Coventry City Centre and Coventry Railway Station. Quorn AFC

Post code for sat nav is B73 5RY.  It's a 3G pitch and the ground has a capacity of 2500 with seating for 230. Last season they finished 14th with 53 points. They won the Sutton Coldfield Charity Cup beating Paget Rangers 9-0 in the final. Runaway top scorer last season was Ryan Nesbitt with 29 goals (now moved to Barwell)

Stourport Swifts
Stourport Swifts play at Walshes Meadow, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire (DY13 0AA) and are one of the oldest non league teams in the country (founded 1882). Ground capacity is 2000 (250 seated). They have recently appointed ex-Wolves player, Quentin Townsend as their new Manager.  Last season they finished 15th with 49 points after failing to win any of their last five games. Top scorer was Nick McPherson with 28 goals followed by Aaron Lloyd with 18. (Lloyd has now moved to Alvechurch.) At the Clubs Awards Night, Player of the Year was Matt Fulloway and Player's Player of the Year was Nick McPherson. Stourport Swifts Chairman Pip Hanson has announced the introduction of five levels of Junior teams within the Club to establish a pipeline of young players coming through and to raise the Club's profile throughout the area. Their website says "Sponsorship is appreciated and necessary to keep the Club running. A number of volunteers give their time for nothing but there is still a great deal of expenses to be paid to keep the Club going and secure it's future. Our goal is to evolve the football to the highest level we can attain and maintain and improve the facilities where we can."  To sponsor a match costs £100 and to sponsor the match ball costs £50. Stourport's average attendance last season was 102 (highest 431, lowest 46)

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

Loughborough University
Also known as Loughborough Students Football Club, they play at the Loughborough University Stadium, ground capacity 3300.  Ex Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson is a former player. Last season they finished a lowly 18th, with 43 points and an identical record to South Normanton Athletic but with a better goal difference. They made a poor start and failed to win any of their first eight matches. Easily their top scorer was Joseph Boachie with 20 goals from 31 appearances.

Wolverhampton Sporting
Wolverhampton Sporting play at Hazel Lane, Great Wyrley, WS6 6AA, and were promoted to Step 5 last season after winning the West Midlands Regional League with 104 points, dropping only 10 points. (Interestingly, Tividale who finished runners-up and challenged Ilkeston's promotion ahead of them, were the only team Wolverhampton Sporting failed to beat.)  Sporting won the West Midlands Regional League Cup beating Black Country Rangers 3-0. They also reached the final of the J W Hunt Cup when they lost 1-0 to Atherstone Town after beating Walsall Wood 3-1 in the semi final. Top scorer last season with a massive 46 goals was Tom Hill who picked up the Managers Player of the Year Award and also the Players Player of the Year Award at the Club's Awards Night.  He was also voted WMRL player of the year.  Wolverhampton Sporting look likely to be promotion challengers again next season and start their pre season friendlies early on Saturday 30th June. They beat Shepshed Dynamo of the Midland Premier League 5-0 in the FA Vase in December.
Following the resignation of Andy Paddock, Sporting have appointed a new management team for the 2018-19 season. Former Smethwick Rangers manager Amandeep Sadur will be first team manager assisted by Steve Clarke and Stephen Cooke.

Coventry United
On 26th June, Coventry United announced the signing of Luke Downes from neighbours, Coventry Sphinx.  Forgot to mention previously that Coventry United ground share with Coventry Rugby Club.
Butts Park Arena's East Stand undoubtedly offers the best seating in the league.

Worcester City
Worcester City are elated that George Forsyth is staying the Club after four weeks of uncertainty. He has agreed to remain with Worcester for the 2018-19 season after agreeing terms. Forsyth made 36 appearances last season and scored 5 goals. Meanwhile, midfield pair Robbie Bunn and Nathan Haywood have left to join other clubs. Haywood made 42 appearances for City last season. Bunn (ex Bromsgrove Sporting) was an important recent signing but leaves without playing.

Lye Town
Lye Town have appointed Andy Wyton as their new boss. Wyton was previously manager of Cradley Town of the West Midlands Regional League Premier where he guided the team away from the drop zone. He resigned after having a request for more financial support turned down. Lee Chilton who scored 16 goals last season has now left Lye but, Jack Till and Adam Meacham are among those to commit for the 2018-19 campaign. Jack Till was last season's  top scorer with 21 goals.

Westfields
Westfields were awarded  the Midland Football League Hospitality Award at the recent MFL Awards Night.

The South Normanton club tweeted  "3 point deduction for Shawbury following our penultimate game of the season, a must win game for both teams in a relegation battle, after playing 3 players under false names. We and others had their suspicions and after such a long drive to Shawbury on a Thursday night it seems justice has been served."

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

Good result for Loughborough University but worrying news from South Normanton with their manager leaving a week before the start of the season. However Marc Strzyzewski has a good pedigree if it is the manager I think it is. he may even end up with ian Robinson as his assistant again. I thought Dunkirk were in turmoil after losing their management team but they appear to be steadying the ship.
As an aside looking at Long Eaton's squad on FA Full Time they have signed on at least eight ex Robins for their squad for this season.
It would be interesting to note who of this seasons MFL Premier Division Ilkeston (Town 1 or FC) have played before!

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

Hopefully each team in the league are now prepared and ready to compete. There is only one promotion place and several clubs hope to make it theirs. It's important to make a good start but it's a long season and there is time to recover if you don't get off to a flyer. In my opinion Highgate , Worcester and Walsall Wood are favourites but there's often a team who will surprise everyone. Some people think that Coventry United could be that team. Romulus are keen to make up for last season's relegation from the Northern Premier. I'm hoping that it's a tight league with lots of twists and turns and Ilkeston Town are up there and near the top right through the season.

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

When asked yesterday who were likely to be the better teams this season in the MFL Premier, these were some of the comments by the visiting officials. Highgate United  have what is considered by many to be the poorest ground in the league but despite this they still manage to attract decent players. They said Worcester City are experiencing a few problems at present so did not expect them to be near the top. They said Sporting Khalsa are a decent side and can be more competitive than their name suggests. They said Shepshed Dynamo always have a good side and suggested Coventry United would do well this season. They then concluded by saying that most Clubs were expecting WALSALL WOOD to win the league with their financial backing and after romping through Division One.

Coventry United manager Terry Anderson in his after match summary suggested that Highgate United were the team to finish above. He also said that his team were hopeful of a top six finish despite losing three of last season's team saying that the players brought in to replace them were quality.

Re: Snippets from MFL Premier League

On Tuesday night Shepshed Dynamo had the biggest non league attendance. (308 fans watched their match against Ilkeston Town).  Romulus  had a 195 attendance on Monday night when they entertained Worcester City.  Both gates were swelled by splendid away support. After losing their opening two games Shepshed take on Walsall Wood next Tuesday (unless an FA Cup replay takes precedence) looking for their first points of the season. This Saturday Ilkeston Town have a chance to go three points clear at the top  when they entertain Lye Town. All the other teams are on FA Cup duty.

Tuesday night also saw the clash of two of the Premier Division's top sides, Sporting Khalsa and Highgate United.  Highgate came out on top with a 2-0 away win after first half goals by Lei Brown and Nick Seabourne.
After their 2-0 win, Manager Paul Smith commented : "New standards were set last night, hard working, disciplined performance. Great three points against a top side. Sporting Khalsa  facilities look stunning, hospitality as good as ever, Feel that any team that finishes above them will win the league."
Khalsa commented that for them it was not a good day at the office. Highgate are set to compete strongly for the title. Two lapses in defensive concentration gave their vibrant and dangerous opponents the openings to decisively win.
