Hopkinson Strike Seals Win For The Robins   Tuesday 20 February 2018

Tim Hopkinson fired Ilkeston Town to a 1-0 victory away at promotion rivals Leicester Road. The Robins remained disciplined and defended well, limiting the oppositions chances. As well as being good enough going forward to get the well-deserved win.The opening 45 minutes was a cagy affair, and clear chances were limited. Montel Gibson saw his effort blocked, before Hopkinson was beaten to the ball by keeper Will Highland. Jake Holt looked the most likely to score for the home side, but was unable to test Jamie Harris, firing both his efforts over the bar. Jordan Wheatley had the best chance of the half. The midfielder burst into the area, on the counter. A heavy touch took the ball wide and meant the effort was straight at Highland. Highland was almost caught out by Jamie Walker at the end of the half. A cross turned shot forced the keeper to back track onto his line and tip the effort over the bar to keep it goalless at the break. Ilkeston’s defensive performance continued into the second half, and the best chances fell their way. A good move saw Fairclough played in down the right, but he was unable to direct his effort past the keeper. At the other end Holt continued to threaten but failed to hit the target after some good play, dragging his effort wide. Ilkeston thought they had the lead, when Gibson played in Hopkinson, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner, only for the linesman to rule it out for offside. Hopkinson did find the back of the net in the 68th minute, with a deflected effort from inside the area. Moments later it could have been two. Wheatley caught the keeper off his line and was only denied by the fingertips of a back-peddling Highland. The home side were limited to half chances. A free kick, fired into the wall represented their best chance of an equaliser, as Ilkeston stayed strong and held out for the win. Starting XI: 1 Hannis, 2 Fairclough, 3 Walker, 4 Shaw, 5 Jemson, 6 T Marshall, 7 Edwards 8 Wheatley, 9 Hopkinson, 10 Gibson (White), 11 Bennett (Morris).
