Hartlepool United currently play three leagues higher than Ilkeston. A few years ago they were in the Football League and their players are full time professionals. Not many people outside of Ilkeston will expect anything other than a comfortable Hartlepool win. But this is the FA Cup and upsets can happen.
Ilkeston have recently been without three first team regulars due to injuries and it's unlikely that Kieran Fenton, Billy Bennett and Nat Watson will to be fit enough to play. On the positive side, we have home advantage and we will have 400 fanatical supporters willing us to produce a sensation.
If the scores are level after 90 minutes it's straight to penalties. Hartlepool will know that a draw at 90 minutes gives Ilkeston a 50:50 chance of going through.

Created some chances but the opening ten minutes cost us. Failure to provide enough cover for the full backs by those in front of them proved crucial
Not enough tracking back. At 2 nil the game was over. But after that we continued giving it a good go
Unlucky not to score. Olly lobbed over when making it 2 1 would have given us a lift. But after a dodgy start we did well. It’s been a great adventure. So back to the bread & butter stuff now
Plenty of money in the coffers and the clubs profile has been nicely enhanced
Well done to Hartlepool. Excellent side who played it the right way and in the right spirit

You are dead right about the first ten minutes! I thought we looked nervous and gave them far too much respect. I would have preferred us to to have pressed them more and put them under pressure so the could not settle. Saying that they did look like they had a couple more players than us. We came back into the game and were unlucky to hit the post several times when with a bit of luck we could been back in the game. Most of the players did not look out of place playing against very good opposition. I was impressed with Kieran Fenton and Jamie Reid.
To be fair Hartlepool are a very good side and I think we did not disgrace ourselves. We must now aim to replicate that second half performance against Chasetown but start like that from the kick off. However some players might be in need of a rest as they are put in a real shift!
Despite the score the whole event made be very proud to be a supporter of Ilkeston Town Football Club!

Match Report :
Saturday 24th October 2020 : FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round
Ilkeston Town 0 Hartlepool United 6
Ilkeston had no answer to Hartlepool’s superior quality and firepower which brought their FA Cup run to an abrupt end. The three leagues gap between the two sides proved too much for Ilkeston to bridge as National League pacesetters, Hartlepool United stormed into a two goal lead inside the first eight minutes. Hartlepool’s plan was to kill the contest quickly and goals by Luke Molyneux and Joe Grey put the visitors two up before Ilkeston had time to settle. It took the Robins 19 minutes to get a shot on goal. Ollie Brown-Hill was played though by Alex Troke but his effort was too high. Kieran Fenton’s excellent tackle stopped another Hartlepool goal but two minutes after that Tom Crawford made it 3-0. A cracking shot by Molyneux smacked against the crossbar, before Ilkeston went close twice at the other end. Brown-Hill found the net but was given offside then Troke was unlucky to see his shot hit the post. Hartlepool continued to threaten but Troke was unlucky again when his header crashed against post just before half time.
On 50 minutes Zak Goodson had a chance when played through by James Reid but keeper Henrick Ravas saved. Jack Thomas was next to burst through but Ravas saved again. Mason Bloomfield fired inches wide before Goodson found the net but was flagged offside. On 68 minutes the hardworking Bloomfield extended Hartlepool’s lead. Five minutes later everyone in the ground appealed for an Ilkeston penalty when Reid was knocked over in the area but the referee said no. Ilkeston desperately tried to force a consolation goal but their efforts were punished when Hartlepool made it five with a swift counter attack finished by David Parkhouse. On 88 minutes Joe Maguire forced another fine save from Ravas, then as if 5-0 wasn’t harsh enough, Gavan Holohan made it six in the 90th minute.

Hartlepool United were superb today. They were too good for us but our players still did us proud. It took us a while to get into the game but when we did we gave it our best shot. We were so unlucky not to get at least one consolation goal. Our players have jobs, their players train every day.
Our supporters were brilliant during the game and even better with their praise for the players afterwards.

My biggest current concern is how easy it is to score against On the counter attack us at the minute
Yesterday and Tuesday
We commit so many bodies forward so often with full backs bombing forward at every opportunity. That’s all well and good if you have a holding midfielder who is mobile, pacy, sits in front of the defence and can get across to cover
But we don’t. I’d like to see us adopt a more safety first approach at times - especially early in games while we’re sussing the opposition out
All in all though it’s been a great start. Back to basics now. Chasetown will be no mugs Tuesday so if we underestimate them it will be at our cost
Hope we have no new injuries after yesterday

The good thing about this match is we don't feel humiliated. We may have lost by 6-0 but we know that we did our best for the whole 90 minutes. We kept going throughout and never stopped trying to pull a goal back. Hartlepool are a terrific side in great form and full of confidence.
Interestingly, we had very few people or clubs wishing us well before the game. Thank you to former players Daryll Thomas and Ash Hunter who took the trouble and also Chris Munroe, Basford United owner and Shepshed Dynamo.
