Stapleford Town 1 Ilkeston Town U23s 3
Two second half strikes within a couple of minutes of each other ensured that Ilkeston took the points in front of a larger than expected turnout of fans.
The first opportunity fell to Stapleford with a header over the bar. Both sides were making chances early on as they jostled for supremacy. Halfway through the first half both keepers produced outstanding saves to keep it goalless. The deadlock was finally broken on 37 minutes when Kieran Cummings fired home after a misplaced clearance was intercepted. Stapleford looked to reply and a good attack was ended by Mitchell Tait. Ilkeston had a penalty shout before half time but the referee was not convinced.
Ilkeston started the second half the stronger and had a shot deflected wide before a Stapleford defender cleared off the line. Ilkeston then had another seemingly valid penalty appeal but again it was rejected. A curling effort by Cummings was just wide but with only one goal the difference the game stayed finely balanced until the 75th minute. The Stapleford keeper’s dive at the feet of an Ilkeston forward resulted in a penalty from which Tait doubled Ilkeston’s lead. This was followed two minutes later by a second goal for Cummings with a fine lob over the stranded keeper. With a deserved three goal advantage Ilkeston looked to see out the game but in added time Stapleford were awarded a penalty from which they reduced the arrears.
