OLLERTON SHOCK CARLTON IN BEHIND-CLOSED-DOORS CLASH
BY LIAM KENT

Ollerton claimed a deserved win against higher-league opposition on Saturday.Ollerton Town’s preparations for their off-season tournament continued on Saturday as they travelled to take on Carlton Town, shocking their higher-league opponents to claim an impressive and deserved 3-0 victory.
It was Ollerton’s first game since the 10th April, when they put in a disappointing performance against Belper United, but they were much improved against Carlton and if fans had been allowed in to watch the game, they may have struggled to believe there was a two division gap between the sides.
Ollerton could have taken the lead inside the opening minute. Straight from kick off, James Matthews attempted an audacious lob from inside his own half, but it dropped just wide of Toby Randall’s goal.
When Ollerton did take the lead, it was Matthews who did so, just before the half hour mark. He stepped up to a free kick 25 yards out and brilliantly curled the ball over the wall, past the despairing dive of Randall and into the back of the net.
Just after half time, it 2-0. Randall misjudged a long ball over the top of his defence and after it bounced over him, Ben Partridge was on hand to take a touch and tap into the empty net.
The visitors had their goalkeeper to thank on the hour mark after he denied Carlton a way back into the game. Former Mansfield Town youngster, Tyler Blake, beat the offside trap and raced through on goal but Levi Owen stood his ground and made a crucial save.
Ollerton made it 3-0 with twenty minutes left on the clock. Luis Rose delivered a teasing corner from the right and the ball made its way to the back post where Brandon Shaw was waiting to fire home with aplomb.
Owen was once again called into action to earn his clean sheet and it was Blake who he once again frustrated. Jack Gibson headed Niall Davie’s free kick towards the direction of Blake who rose to power a header at goal, only to see Owen acrobatically tip the ball over the bar.
Ollerton Town Starting XI: Owen; Slack, Vardy; A. Morley, Madin, Shaw; Stretton, Martin, Matthews; Rose, Partridge
Subs On: Bain, Fletcher, Hardwick, Watson

Is this the Luis Rose who played for Ilkeston?

CARLTON SIGN OLLERTON PLAYER FOLLOWING FRIENDLY

MAY 8, 2021
EXCITING NEW SIGNING FOR MILLERS AS FORMER MANSFIELD TOWN YOUNGSTER SIGNS

Carlton Town are delighted to announce the signing on contract of former Mansfield Town youngster James Matthews who looks likely to be a direct replacement for Ollie Clark who recently joined Basford United.

Matthews impressed not only President Roger Smith during a behind closed door friendly when he starred in a 3-0 victory for the opposition Ollerton Town, but more importantly joint managers Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey and after meeting them this week, the impressive youngster as put pen to paper on a deal with the club.

Matthews who is only 21 played for AFC Mansfield before receiving an offer to play for Gainsborough Trinity last season and had received approaches from other clubs while playing for Ollerton recently.

After the behind closed door friendly, the Millers management duo spoke to their own contacts and received nothing but positive feedback about the youngster with the advice generally being, if you don’t sign him, somebody else will.

Matthews has spoken exclusively to this website and admitted that the last two seasons had been stop, start due to the pandemic and admitted he was keen to come to a club with ambition and faced with a choice, it was Tommy and Mark who won him over. Stop, start it has been for us all due to Covid 19 and repeated lockdowns, but with the vaccine rollout proving extremely successful, there is a real hope that next season will be a completed one

Matthews told us “I’m really excited to be coming on board, I’m ambitious and looking to challenge for promotion, no messing about, I aim to get straight down to business, I was impressed with Tommy and Mark and their drive and ambition and can’t wait to meet the lads and get stuck into preseason training”

The box to box midfielder also revealed that he thought it was vital midfield players contribute to the club’s goal count and he admitted that hitting double figures was a priority in his first  forthcoming season with the Millers.
