Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

.

All being well there will be live updates from Farley Way Stadium, Quorn, here on WhiteBall. Kickoff is 3pm.

Looking forward to seeing Ilkeston's four new signings for the first time.

The game has added significance due to Ikeston possibly playing against Quorn in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. Quorn have to overcome Selston in the Extra Preliminary Round.

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

Quorn took their chances in the opening 20 minutes when they were on top. After that Ilkeston dominated but failed to score, hitting the crossbar twice.

Ex Ilkeston players James Cullingworth and Kyle Bryant are playing well for Quorn.
Luke Varney goal was a belter beating Stainsby from the edge of the are with a blockbuster.

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

A few changes made by Ilkeston. The team for the second half is: Stainsby, Bennett, Trialist, Fenton, Marzano, Rodgers, Wright, Reid, Goodson, Lee, Lambert.

Lambert wins a corner. Goodson shot blocked. Goodson then hits post as Ilkeston continue to press.       0-2      51 minutes

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

It's pretty much Ilkeston pressing with the odd counter attack by Quorn but Quorn still lead.  Jake Wright shot is inches wide after being fed by Goodson.  still 1-2 after 75 minutes

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

75' Seke Spence and Jack Rodgers replace James Reid and Billy Bennett.

Quorn are hanging on to their slender lead. Their keeper has been very busy. Free kick Ilkeston just outside area. Lambert effort too high.       1-2   84 minutes

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

A draw was the least Ilkeston deserved. After a shaky start when they conceded twice, Ilkeston gradually recovered and totally dominated the second half when Quorn had their keeper to thank for keeping them in the game.
There were some decent Ilkeston moves and individual performances. Of the new players, James Carvell immediately caught the eye always causing problems for the Quorn defenders.

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

Match Report

Quorn 2  Ilkeston Town  2
Ilkeston’s first pre-season game ended in a draw. It was the least they deserved after dominating most of the game but it it took a goal by Mason Lee two minutes from time to achieve parity in the scoreline. The Quorn keeper had done wonders keeping his side ahead and Ilkeston hit the woodwork three times. Twenty players were used by the Robins including four trialists as Martin Carruthers took a first look at possible formations in a match situation.
Quorn were first to settle and went ahead after 11 minutes following a delay when a spectator was injured after being struck by the ball.  Five minutes later it was 2-0 when ex-pro Luke Varney turned back the clock with a cracker of a goal which gave Richard Stainsby no chance. From then on Ilkeston fought their way back with new signing James Carvell prominent in attack and going close after cutting inside and forcing an outstanding save. A James Reid free kick was headed against the crossbar by a trialist on 31 minutes. There was then a chance for Remaye Campbell when he saw the Quorn keeper off his line but the keeper was able to recover his ground. Five minutes before half time Ilkeston twice went close when Alex Troke’s free kick rattled the bar and Campbell’s follow up shot was cleared off the goal line.
Several changes were made for the second half. Zak Goodson immediately made an impact first hitting the post then winning a penalty on 54 minutes from which he scored to make it 2-1. Another effort by Goodson was deflected for a corner, a Mason Lee shot was saved and Jake Wright was inches wide as Ilkeston pressed hard for an equaliser. Kole Lambert was denied before Academy graduate Seke Spence curled one wide but he immediately made amends by crossing perfectly for Lee’s late close range equaliser.

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

Not the best of starts, but I thought we played well for the last hour of the game. Promising debuts from Wakefield (looks like a box-to-box midfielder) and Carvell (a tricky winger) but perhaps not so good from Frances (right fullback) or Campbell (centre-forward), but it's early days. The standout for me was Trialist C who came on to replace Kelvin Wilson. A centre-back, built like a brick you-know-what, liked like he was quite pacy (which we could do with - who remembers the Newcastle game away last season (or was it the season before last, I'm losing track!) when that little, pacy winger exposed our lack of pace at the back?), made some well-timed crunching tackles, and played some lovely long-range passes to our wide men. I hope he gets another chance. Not a Kole Lambert fan I'm afraid and the sooner we've got Durrant back between the sticks the better.

Interesting comments, Trowell Nicky. I also commented in the second half that the centre back looked good. Was told his name was Irvine. Hope we sign him. He may not displace Maguire but he looked good enough to get in the team somewhere. As you said, it's early days and the new players need time to get used to each other. Carvell made an immediate impression with his willingness to take defenders on. With him on one side and Goodson on the other, attacking options look promising.

Re: Quorn v Ilkeston : Live Updates

The triallist who came on for Kelvin was Stern Irvine who has just been released by Notts County. He is Scottish and I thought he had an excellent debut! To be honest they only really had two shots but scored from both of them. I think if we had been a bit more clinical we could have won comfortably. To say they had only a few training sessions I thought they did OK especially when Quorn started to tire in the second half.
I thought they had a lovely set up and ground at Quorn and the bar staff were friendly and helpful. One guy was not happy that we had apparently tried to poach Steve Hart from them three years ago but life is too short to hold a grudge and I think Quorn will always do well at any level they find themselves at. Beautiful weather, entertaining football and a nice drive out. What more can you ask for?
