Robins sign promising young defender 
We are delighted to announce the signing of defender Stern Irvine.
Stern, 18, has spent the last two years coming through Notts County’s academy and following his release from the Magpies over the summer, has featured as a trialist for the Robins in some of their pre-season friendlies.
And boss Martin Carruthers says he’s delighted to have brought the youngster in.He said: “It’s great to get Stern on board and he is a fantastic addition to our squad.
“He is a player with real potential who will have opportunities to progress to higher levels. Lots of professional clubs were interested in signing him and it’s a real coup for this club to get him and facilitate his development.

With the signing of Stern Irvine we now have at least 14 players who will be expecting to be in the starting eleven at Stamford

Stern Irvine looks a great prospect and it will be interesting to see how Martin fits all this talent into the starting eleven. We all know its a squad game everyone really wants to be in that starting eleven.
When I heard his name I thought of Stern John immediately but just presumed it was a co incidence he had the same first name. He does however join a very long list of Ilkeston players who have famous relatives. Joe Maguire, Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, Scott Huckerby, Max Fairbrother, Laurie Wilson, Callum Chettle, Lewis Walker, Mitchell Rose, Rex Osman etc.

Despite what we were told Stern Irvine is not related to Stern John in anyway!

We have such a good squad now that it's impossible to predict the starting eleven for Stamford. With such an abundance of talent it seems like Martin Carruthers will have to operate a rotation system similar to that at Manchester City. With the squad we have we're always going to have a super strong bench giving us options when things aren't going to plan.
Can't wait for August 14th when 100 plus Ilkeston supporters descend on Stamford and we go there with real hopes that we can win. I think that the Stamford team will be pretty much identical to last season while in my opinion, we have a much improved side so it's going to be a real contest.
