Our FCB side pick up their first win of the season after beating Southwell City 2-1 at the NMG.
Goals from Jamie Williamson and Kieran Cummings.

Ilkeston Town U23s v Southwell City   (Match Report compiled from the notes of Anthony Spencer)

The Under 23s started their season with a home fixture against Southwell City. Prior to the game, the Ilkeston management team had to change the squad due to injuries and players being promoted to the first team squad. This gave a great opportunity to the 16 year old academy player Joel Sercey who made his U23s debut.  Joel learned very early on the difference between under 16s and men’s football after being wiped out by the opposing centre half. To his credit he just got up and carried on. Southwell clearly came with a game plan of being very physical and hard working which worked a treat as the Under 23s initially struggled to get their game going.

Half time 0-0

The second half started like first with Southwell on top but a couple of changes made at half time eventually saw an improvement in the Under 23s performance. However, it was Southwell who scored first with an excellent finish from outside of the area. This seemed to knock a bit of confidence out of the boys but credit to them for understanding that you can’t be at you best every game and they pulled themselves together with a determination not to lose. A great pass from CJ to Lamin, then another good ball to Kieran created an opportunity for the equaliser. Kieran went by a defender and slotted the ball calmly into the corner of the net. Southwell then seemed to lose their belief and Ilkeston’s passing game began to flourish. Goal number two was soon to follow. Lamina did the work setting up centre half  Willo whose finish was deadly. That should have been game over but a clash of heads involving Willo and Mazhi saw us temporarily down to nine players.  Mazhi was able to return but Willo could not meaning we had to play the final ten minutes one player short. Southwell pushed hard to equalise but Beau was on top form to deny them including an outstanding save at the death.

Result  :   Ilkeston Town U23s  2  Southwell City 1
