Free kick is cleared.   Campbell header is only just wide.

Full time     Ilkeston  2  Sporting Khalsa  3

Fair result in my opinion.

Re: Ilkeston v Sporting Khalsa - Tue 17 Aug '21 - Kickoff 7 45pm

Got what we deserved. Very leggy lethargic display

Just about deserved to be level at half time although Khalsa had more possession but after half time we got absolutely bossed

We had one weak effort on target second half to their nine and we were fortunate to only lose by one goal

A fairer reflection would have been 5 or 6 2

No complaints. Beaten by a better side

How do you explain that? Same starting 11 as Saturday. Terrific Saturday, woeful last night. Looked like they were playing their 4th game in 4 days.

Match Report:

Tue 17th August 2021
North Premier League - Midlands Division
Ilkeston Town  2  Sporting Khalsa  3
The euphoria of Ilkeston’s opening day victory at Stamford was quickly extinguished by a dose of realism as the Robins succumbed to a home defeat against Sporting Khalsa. The visitors were new to the Northern Premier League after being promoted last season but were good value for their win despite going behind in the first minute. Ilkeston had only themselves to blame though as all three Khalsa goals came from defensive errors.
The match started with a chance for Khalsa followed by a goal for Ilkeston, both inside the first minute. Remaye Campbell was the Ilkeston scorer converting Billy Bennett’s cross. It was nearly 2-0 on 5 minutes when Khalsa keeper Arnold parried Zak Goodson’s effort and the ball fell to Campbell whose shot hit a defender on the line. Khalsa hit back with an effort by Armstrong which Ross Durrant did well to push round the post but on 11 minutes they equalised. Charlie Marzano’s back pass to Durrant was too short and eagerly accepted by McKenzie who fired home. On the half hour Goodson restored Ilkeston’s lead but just before half time Khalsa levelled again with McKenzie’s second after another Ilkeston defensive lapse.
Khalsa started the second half with real belief and went ahead for the fist time on 57 minutes. This time it was Durrant at fault when he spilled the ball allowing Gosling a tap in. Six minutes later Durrant atoned for his error with a fantastic double save keeping out two point blank shots as Khalsa grew in confidence. Durrant was called upon again as Khalsa pushed for a fourth. Ilkeston’s only serious effort on goal in the second half came on 80 minutes. Alex Troke’s cut back was met with a fierce volley by Goodson but it flashed the wrong side of the post. In the dying moments a Campbell header was just wide but Khalsa deserved their win.

My opinion :

Khalsa did to us what we did to Stamford, ie stopped us from playing.  The other thing is, you can’t give away three goals and expect to win. I’m not blaming individuals because you win as a team and lose as a team. There will always be mistakes and sometimes they're punished as they were last night. I felt sorry for Marzano who played so well at Stamford but seemed totally unnerved last night after his back pass error.  We might have been two up before Marzano’s catastrophe then gave away a needless soft equaliser just before half time. The second half we were outplayed and could have no complaints,  Apparently the Khalsa keeper never had to make a save. It’s frustrating to lose a game you expected to win but Khalsa were far better than expected and will surely be a test other promotion hopefuls. The reality is that we won’t always play like we did at Stamford. We have to accept that there will always be off days and move on.

This scout likes our ground :

Russell Dutton @RussellDutton.10h
I’ve been scouting tonight at Ilkeston Town v Sporting Khalsa in the Northern premier league midlands division. First of all the ground was outstanding and the standard of play and goals were exceptional. There is no other country in the world who can beat our league structure

Mark Duffy's Report

Ilkeston rue defensive errors as Khalsa take the points
NPL Midlands
Ilkeston Town 2        Campbell 1, Goodson 30
Sporting Khalsa 3    McKenzie 11, 41 Gosling 58

Ilkeston Town failed to follow up their impressive win at Stamford on Saturday as visitors Sporting Khalsa recovered from going a goal behind in the opening minute to take the points on Tuesday night.  The Robins only had themselves to blame after a disappointing overall display that also saw them gift Khalsa all three of their goals, although the visitors were impressive throughout and could easily have won by a bigger margin. It left Robins boss Martin Carruthers admitting it was 'back to the drawing board' as he reflected on a frustrating night.

The Robins took no time to get their noses in front, scoring the opener just 49 seconds in as Zak Goodson released Billy Bennett down the left and his low ball into the six-yard box was turned in by Remaye Campbell.  Campbell had another chance three minutes later when Goodson’s effort was blocked by keeper Sam Arnold as he rushed out of goal, Campbell following up 35 yards out but his chip hitting the back pedalling Arnold on his rear end and eventually the ball was cleared.

Khalsa’s first effort of note came on eight minutes when Liam Armstrong’s low strike from the edge of the penalty area was well pushed wide of the post by Ross Durrant.

The visitors were then gifted an equaliser three minutes later. It was a horror show for Robins right-back Charlie Marzano, whose back pass was horribly short to Durrant and Josh McKenzie was able to intercept, run on and finish well past the Robins keeper to level the scores.  Chances then dried up as both sides probed aplenty but without much joy, although the Robins would soon regain the lead on the half-hour mark as Goodson received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, switched to his left foot and curled an effort past Arnold and into the corner of the net.

But Khalsa came back again and once more it was McKenzie who levelled. This time Armstrong’s through ball too easily cut the defence open and the veteran Khalsa striker got goal side of Kieron Fenton who then lost the foot race to the penalty area and McKenzie slid the ball past the onrushing Durrant.  Alex Troke’s 25 yarder was dealt with by Arnold as the half came to a close, both sides having given as good as they got in an entertaining first 45.

Durrant was forced into action ten minutes into the second-half when James McGrady’s header from a free-kick out wide was well parried. But Durrant was then left disappointed moments later as McGrady saw another effort not held by the Robins keeper and this time Jake Gosling followed up to slide the ball home from the rebound.

Durrant then made amends as he produced a sublime double save to twice deny McGrady, first with a header from a right wing cross and then his volleyed rebound.  The duo’s personal duel continued as McGrady then got free down the right and saw his low shot pushed aside well by Durrant.  The Robins were struggling to make headway but nearly levelled on 80 when Troke’s pull back found Goodson who flashed an effort just wide of the post.

McGrady again saw Durrant push a shot wide with five to go as Khalsa searched for a fourth, Campbell flicking a header a few yards wide in stoppage time as Ilkeston had a late flurry but without success.

Ilkeston: Durrant, Marzano (Verma 46), Bennett, Wakefield, Maguire, Fenton, Goodson, Spence (Carvell 68), Campbell, Troke, Tait. Not used: Irvine, Rogers, Stainsby.
Sporting Khalsa: Arnold, Franco, Worsey, Perks, Robinson, Ferrier, Armstrong (Woodhouse 79), Whittaker, McKenzie (Cameron 83), Gosling, McGrady. Not used: Jones, Williams, Howkins.

Khalsa manager's thoughts before the start of the season.

Sporting Khalsa step into unknown – with help from friends
Published: Aug 13, 2021

Sporting Khalsa boss Ian Rowe admits he will seek guidance from his counterparts at both Halesowen Town and Chasetown as they enter the unknown this term. Khalsa are competing in step four of non-league for the first time in their 30-year history following promotion to the Northern Premier Midlands.
The first test at the level for the Willenhall-based side is at home against Yaxley, coming up from Cambridgeshire, tomorrow.
They are a new opponent for Rowe, who said: “I don’t really know much about Yaxley, to be fair.
“They’re a bit off the beaten track, so we’re going into it quite blind, really. “In some ways, that ain’t a bad thing. They can worry about us rather than the other way around.
“But it’s a trip into the unknown this weekend, and then we’ll take it from there.” Khalsa, who have a thriving set-up at Noose Lane, had been working towards promotion for several years. Rowe hopes to consolidate and work with other local bosses to get info on some of the teams further afield such as Cambridge City, Soham Town Rangers and Wisbech Town.
“We’re looking forward to it. It’s exciting times,” he said. “We just want to be competitive and consolidate our position in the league. “Obviously, it’s unknown. We know all the local sides – Coleshill, Sutton, Chasetown. We’ve played them all apart from Halesowen.
“We’ve got good relationships with them all, so hopefully we can tap into their knowledge about sides we don’t know.
“I’ll be relying on Neil Tooth at Sutton, Cam Stewart at Coleshill, Mark Swann at Chasetown and Paul Smith at Halesowen.

Sporting Khalsa are the team to watch for goals. Their FA Cup win on Saturday against Market Drayton gave them another high scoring narrow win.
Their three matches so far have produced 17 goals, a 4-3 win against Yaxley followed by 3-2 wins against Ilkeston and Market Drayton.
