Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

This is a massive game for both teams as they try to keep with Halesowen who play Handsworth in the FA cup so the three points are vital for both teams . TBH i would be happy with a draw but if we have  players out with injuries i cant see us winning ( sorry ) 3-2 .... But i certainly hope the team prove me wrong and make me eat my words.
Carlton have the tightest defence but having said that they havent scored many 12 for and 4 against ,so different to us with 25 for, 13 against. . 3 pts for Carlton will them within one point of Halesowen same games played . A win for Ilkeston will bring them within 3pts  of Halesowen but one more game played . So really its we cant afford to loose ..............

Thanks for posting Kev
Unfortunately the two Johns are both unavailable to cover the Carlton match so there will be no updates unless one of our members volunteers.
But I will be doing score updates from all of the matches in our league .

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

Better at the back again. Decent point with a patched up side

For once our finishing let us down. Should have been ahead when they scored. Their goal was a little fortunate but we got our luck in the end and squeezed a slight scuff through the keepers legs late on

No more than we deserved. 8 chances to 5 by my reckoning

It’s been a decent start. We’ve played some good sides and now have a few ‘easier’ games - on paper at least

Looked fit on a hot day on a dry bumpy pitch. The lads deserve credit after a tough schedule - a few were playing with knocks yesterday

Well done to all involved on a point gained

Thanks for that summary Dick. I’m afraid I got frustrated when it looked like a defeat. It always seems worse when you’re not there. Also didn’t realise we had so many injuries.

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

Well what a day that was starting with the short journey to Carlton , well i say a short journey but took 1hr 45 mins . Yes you read this right thats how long it took . The double decker bus went via Spondon onto the A52 , then onto the M! south , them it went along Rememberence way to Trent Bridge . The bus then went Notts County`s ground onto the Colwick look road , where eventually got to ground via a small detour around stoke Lane. phew !!! Even the person on the tannoy had a say about it . lol lol
Now onto the game which was very cagey at first with the left winger having plenty of the ball and space at times . The best chance of the game game to Ilkeston which quickly followed by another good chance but both times the keeper saved . But Carlton went ahead with a bit luck of a ricochet after a good save from Ross . In the second half  i thought we played the better football on a very dry bobbly pitch with more half chances and few good saves by their keeper. Carlton didnt get so much down their left because the sub Frances stopped most of their attacks plus doing good job supporting the forwards. The half chances were getting to players and the ground who were fine voice trying to help the team . Finally the players got their reward with their hard work by scoring a bit of a scrappy goal in the final minute . The players and  the fans behind goal were ecstatic in their celebrations , even Dave, Ally and Cliffy enjoyed that one in the small stand behind the goal .
I think bone hard pitch didnt help the game but its the same for both teams which i thought they both tried hard to play football ....
Carlton are a great little club with great hosts .....
Did we deserve the point ? TOO RIGHT we did ,....
Weather......a very warm sunny day
Att..............331 ( i thought it was around 500 by the looks of it to me )

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

I thought we edged it over the piece, but a draw was probably a fair result. Carlton looked to be a decent side, a hard-working, no-nonsense side who seem to concentrate more on not conceding goals than on scoring them. You can certainly see why they don't concede many; they're strong defensively. Carvell and Brown-Hill got very little change out of their full-backs and Campbell struggled against their centre-backs. Their keeper played well, although we didn't test him much.

For most of the first half we looked good and controlled the game. We had 2 good chances, and in a game of few chances, we had to take one of them. Until we scored, I'm struggling to think of a decent chance we created in the second half. I thought Irvine had a solid game at the back. And Frances looked good at right-back when he came on. Troke seemed to be playing more of a midfield role in an adventurous lineup, with Goodson, Carvell, and Campbell up front. Don't know why Reid didn't start, he was obviously fit enough to play some part in the game because he came on for Bennett and played left-back initially. Did injuries play a part in team selection?

Our crosses, through balls, and corners were poor all game.

Fair play to our lads though, they kept plugging away and got their just reward at the death. And come the end of the season, it could be an important point. Had Carlton won, they'd be 4 points clear of us with a game in hand.

It's frustrating, because Belper, Carlton, Chasetown, and Sporting Khalsa are all games we could, and probably should, have won. I think it's a fair point that we've had a tricky run of games, especially away from home, with games at Colesville, Carlton, Belper, and Stamford. We have to take 9 points from the next 3 - Sutton Coldfield, Histon, and Soham.

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

.

Thank you Dick Durrant, Kevilsonlad and Trowell Nicky for your Match summaries. I couldn't get on to Danny's twitter updates during the game so I only had the score to go by. I didn't know if we were on top or under pressure. Internet is usually good in the Sporades so I'm not complaining.
Unless I test positive on my pre-departure covid test I'll be back for the Sutton Coldfield match and I'm looking forward to that.
Belper play Carlton tomorrow night so I'll do updates from that game. Should be a decent match. Belper seem to be underperforming so far but hopefully they can prevent a Carlton win.

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

Nicky makes a good point re set plays. Thinking back through the Carlton game they weren’t great. But two training sessions this week to work something out

After the debacle that was the last hour v Chasetown we’ve looked a lot more organised defensively v Spalding & Carlton

I felt we were playing out from the back for the sake of it sometimes which prevented us from getting enough bodies forward. There’s a difference between a long boot and a long pass. Learning and implementing the difference between the two is key. By all means play out sometimes. But not always

We’ve had more energy last two games too. Slow but steady progress. Learn from mistakes and adapt accordingly

Yep, same here. Looked like a definite hand ball but couldn't see whether it was just inside or just outside the area.

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

RECORD LEAGUE ATTENDANCE, LAST MINUTE AGONY AND LEIGH WOOD AT STOKE LANE!

It was a full on Saturday at Stoke Lane with Ilkeston the visitors in a big local derby top five clash. Carlton secured a record league attendance of 331 at Stoke Lane for a game that in fairness wasn’t a thriller, but kept everyone guessing till the very last kick of the game. Carlton also secured Match Sponsors, Matchball Sponsors and Mascot Sponsors for the first time ever for a fixture and that it itself gives an idea of the direction the club is moving in.

Omotolani Omotola in for the injured Aaron Opoku opened the scoring for the Millers just before the interval, but Carlton suffered late heartbreak with Charlie Wakefield equalising for Ilkeston in the 95th minute after Dan Brown had cleared off the line.

Although gutted to concede their second late goal in 5 days, Joint managers Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey admitted a draw was probably a fair result, given the visitors shared a good proportion of possession and drew several good saves from Kieran Preston in the Millers goal.

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

I felt sure I’d seen Carlton’s keeper, Kieran Preston, play before. He came from Basford United in the close season and I must have seen one of his Basford games last season. He’s also played for Scotland at Under 21 level. Good keeper.

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

Was at Forest with Ross. Year younger. Very unlucky not to be offered a pro deal but had a bad time with knee injuries

Spent time at Bristol Rovers without playing a game. Think he’s on loan from Basford until Jan. Really nice lad too

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

Thanks for the additional info Dick; really interesting. Sounds like a big drop, from almost signing with Forest to Step 3/Step 4 of the non-league pyramid, but I guess many footballers have similar stories.

23/9/2021 11:36 AM  #30

Re: Carlton Town FC v Ilkeston Town Fc

They do indeed. Pro clubs have lots of keepers. Forest for example had 8 aged 18 or over including Ross who was let go at 20 after only making 2 first team squads as unused suib in 4 years as a pro

Then lots of decent keepers leave the full time game and there aren’t enough senior non league shirts for them all so lads like KP Ross etc finish up as Step 3 & 4. It’s just the way it is I’m afraid
