Sat 9th Oct 2021 - FA Trophy - 2nd Qualifying Round
DAVENTRY TOWN  0  ILKESTON TOWN  0   (Ilkeston won 4-1 on penalties)
Seven weeks ago Ilkeston travelled to Daventry and won 4-0. This time in the FA Trophy the outcome was very different with the Robins held by their much improved hosts. Ilkeston had the majority of possession in the first half but couldn’t turn their superiority into goals. Daventry did much better after the break and as the game drew to a close both teams had opportunities to win it.
Ilkeston dominated the early exchanges. Tommy Williams got on the end of a Charlie Wakefield cross but his header cleared the bar. There was an appeal for a penalty when Alex Troke was knocked over and then Remaye Campbell was twice close with both efforts bringing good saves from Daventry keeper, James Martin. The closest Ilkeston came to a goal was a Zak Goodson attempt that rattled the underside of the crossbar before being scrambled away. Just before half time Ilkeston had what appeared to be a stonewall penalty appeal turned down when Troke was sent tumbling for a second time.
Daventry made a strong start to the second half and a quick turn and shot by Joel Nketia brought a terrific reaction save from Ross Durrant. On 67 minutes a James Reid free kick found Joe Maguire but his header was too high. Another Reid free kick was heading for the top corner before Martin touched it over the bar. With six minutes left Durrant made the save of the game to stop Daventry going ahead. Neither side could find a winner so the tie was decided by penalties. Troke, Bennett and Fenton scored their penalties whereas Daventry scored only one of their first three. That left Reid with the opportunity to give Ilkeston an unassailable 4-1 lead and take them through to the next round

Re: FA Trophy : Daventry v Ilkeston : Sat 9 Oct '21

Strange one. Total domination of first half hour with Daventry seemingly playing for pens from the start

At least one spot kick turned down by a very poor ref. Not biased -but he looked nervy and out of his depth

Our failure to capitalise on our domination gave them hope and for the last hour they matched us. Nothing stuck up top and we lacked quality going forward

Defensively much better - now just two conceded in five proper games. One was a pen and the other an OG. But what was missing was midfielders getting past the forwards. The midfielders drop deeper and deeper when we’re under pressure which makes it so hard to get bodies forward in numbers. So not a great display overall. Had we scored in the first half hour though it’d have been very different as Dav would have needed to change plan

Not scoring their first two pens made it a big job for them. Our pens were clinical so we’re through. Not vintage stuff but we progress. Tricky pitch - very flat surface but long grass with no zip which made for a slow game

Credit to Daventry for keeping going and showing spirit and we just about survive. Our squad is good now. Only thing missing for me is a dynamic goal scoring central midfielder who makes forward runs. But they’re hard to find. Williams is solid at right back without being spectacular and thus represents good recruitment

When Tait Verma & Irvine are fit it will strengthen us. Let’s see what the draw for the next round brings

.

Today we find out who we play in the next round of the FA Trophy

The FA Trophy 3rd qualifying round match will be played on Saturday 30th October which was previously a blank Saturday on our fixture list so our win over Daventry means we now have a match on that date.

Re: FA Trophy : Daventry v Ilkeston : Sat 9 Oct '21

Against teams from our league a draw away is never really a bad result. Remember Daventry won at Stamford in the last round

We were the better side and, had we scored early it would have been different and, in my view, 3 or 4 nil. Daventry wound down the clock from the start. But our lack on luck/ composure in the final third gave them hope second half. That said, we had 7 or so chances to their 3 and I’m pretty sure we should have had a penalty - even two

We defended well which is a positive though. Tommy Williams looks a good signing. Solid old school full back. Nowt fancy but knows his job & does the basics well

Not many 8/10 performances for me so my MOM goes to Fenners for some timely interceptions and his general reading of the game

Good trip - nice people and a very pleasant little ground
