These are the matches in our league Sat 4th December
Carlton Town Stamford
Chasetown Spalding United
Coleshill Town Shepshed Dynamo

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

.

Wisbech Town have announced the signing of Sam Bennett from Soham Town Rangers.

Manager Brett Whaley said: "I’m delighted to get Sam on board. We’ve been wanting to bring a forward in that can stretch sides with their pace and Sam can definitely do that.

"Whenever I’ve come up against him I’ve been really impressed with his movement and he’s always been a real threat, and I think he’ll really compliment the forwards we already have at the club."

On the move, Bennett said: "Just want to say that I am delighted to have signed for Wisbech Town."I feel this is a great club for me being a local lad and I am very excited to meet up with the staff and players and really kick on this season.

"I want to be able to make plenty of goals but also score plenty as well as this is a big part of my game."I'm ready for the challenge ahead and want to help the boys push on this season and get many more points on the board."

The club have also confirmed the signings of Theo Lukyanuzi on loan and goalkeeper Dylan Taylor.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

PAST GAMES AGAINST WISBECH TOWN

The first game against Wisbech Town was in 1997 despite us both playing in the Midland League and Southern League in the fiftes and sixties. We beat the Fenmen 5-2 in our first game with what was a classic Ilkeston Town line up from the Keith Alexander era. In the reverse fixture on New Years Day in 1998 939 fans turned up to watch a 3-3 draw. The Robins went on to win the next eleven home games to clinch promotion to the Southern League Premier Division. Two weeks earlier Ilkeston had lost to Scunthorpe United 2-1 in an FA Cup replay in front of 2,109 fans. The gate against Wisbech was only the sixth largest of the season.

In 2019 Ilkeston Town lost their first ever game against Wisbech in a 2-1 home defeat. They won away from home 2-0 in January before the season was curtailed due to the Covid epidemic. In this second game the Robins had made seven changes to their line upon from their earlier defeat. It was Squires first and only appearance for Ilkeston and Alex Marshall’s last ever game in the red of Ilkeston.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

.

These are the matches in our league Sat 4th December
Carlton Town Stamford
Chasetown Spalding United
Coleshill Town Shepshed Dynamo
Corby Town Belper Town
Halesowen Town Daventry Town
Histon Sporting Khalsa
Ilkeston Town Wisbech Town
Loughborough Dynamo Cambridge City
Soham Town Rangers Bedworth United
Yaxley  v  Sutton Coldfield Town

This coming Saturday's fixtures could throw up some surprises.

Halesowen and Ilkeston are home to struggling opponents and should win but the other fixtures are less predictable.

The big match is Carlton v Stamford    -   Neither will want to lose ground in the promotion race but one of them will or both of them will if it's a draw. In my opinion a draw is the most likely result.

The matches involving the other pacemakers Chasetown, Coleshill and Belper are not foregone conclusions

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

.

It's Joe Maguire's 250th game for Ilkeston against Wisbech and he is featured in the matchday programme.  This is a massive achievement by one of Ilkeston's finest and most popular players so let's hope for a bumper crowd and show our appreciation.
Programmes will be in short supply so grab one early.

Our official matchday programme is available to purchase at Saturday’s game. An exclusive issue for Joe Maguire's 250th game for the Robins! #OneTownOneClub

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

..

Last Saturday at Yaxley we had a reminder that no result is a certainty even when the opposition is near the bottom of the league table. Wisbech have only nine points and are in the relegation zone and will be desperate to move up the table. They are just above the two automatic relegation positions but are in a relegation playoff position. A narrow 4-3 defeat at Belper in their last game should be our warning. Toby Allen is their top scorer with 7 goals which is a good return for a club in their position. The last time they visited the NMG in the curtailed 2019-20 season they won 2-1.

That said, we have a good opportunity to extend our winning sequence at the NMG. Since losing to Chasetown we have won five out of five matches scoring 22 goals and conceding only one.
With Carlton playing against Stamford we have the opportunity improve our position at the top.

In my opinion Carlton v Stamford is a stone cold, sure fire, absolute centainty, banker draw.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

According to the stats after the Yaxley game, Joe Maguire had made 33 career appearances for Ilkeston. Looks like he also played for Ilkeston Town/Ilkeston in the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 seasons. 249 - 33 = 216. So he played 216 games in 4 seasons? An average of 54 games a season for 4 years seems high. Maybe there were 24 teams in a league and so they played 46 league games and Ilkeston had a few good cup runs, and Joe stayed mainly injury/suspension free? Just wondering.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

I think the 250 appearances will include : League, all cup competitions ie FA Cup, FA Trophy, League Cup and Derbyshire Senior Cup.  And replays.

In the season we reached the playoffs there were 46 league matches plus two playoff matches

We usually had 3 or 4 matches in the Derbyshire Senior Cup each season

If that’s not enough then maybe some Other matches are included.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

.

Since Harry Maguire hit the big time Joe Maguire has had to live in his shadow. But it was Joe who Harry learned from. For the supporters of Ilkeston Town, today is Joe's day as he completes 250 appearances for the Club. Come down to the NMG and show your appreciation if you can.

There will be updates throughout the game as usual here on WhiteBall today followed by after match opinions over the following days. More post match comments are always welcome. You need to be a registered member to contribute so why not join.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR ILKESTON TOWN AND WISBECH TOWN

Amongst the players who have turned out for both todays are some Ilkeston Town legends.

Keith Alexander
Keith played for Wisbech as a 19 year old youngster after leaving Notts County. He then briefly returned to Wisbech as a 30 year old and scored four goals in six games. Keith then belatedly joined Grimsby Tow and embarked on a career in League Football before eventually returning to Ilkeston Town as a manager and becaming a New Manor Ground legend.

Matt Carmichael
Played five games for Wisbech as a 36 year-old in 200-01 season. He was signed for Ilkeston by Keith Alexander and played a key role in the Robin’s famous FA Cup runs in the 90s. He was a target man who enabled other forwards to feed off his knockdowns. Matt had a spell as manager at Lincoln Moorlands before appearing to retire from football.

Other players who have played for both teams include Liam Marshall, Mason Lee, Conor Green and Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson.
