Nearly a second goal for Williams but Pearson pulls off a fine save. Now Durrant does well to smother a shot

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

Three points. But not a vintage display IMO

A bit sloppy last half hour. I’m sure the manager will be disappointed at how easy we were to create chances against

That said we played some nice football in patches in tough conditions. Fourth goal must be about 30 passes. Great team goal

But a win is a win. Great support on a horrible day. MOM for me Rem Campbell. Great hold up play and tireless work

Onward and upward

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

Good three points. I can see why Wisbech concede a lot of goals though. They kept attacking at the expense of their midfield which appeared almost non existent for spells in the second half. My Man of the Match was Charlie Wakefield who I thought was magnificent yet again. Kieran Fenton was excelent as was Tommy Williams. Jared Bird had for me his best game since he arrived and Zak Goodson was well Zak Goodson. He looked a bit out of sorts first half but then scored two brilliant goals after the break. Oh and our keeper made a couple of very important saves! My only real complaint was the weather. Surely Dave and Andy should be getting that sorted as it was far too cold up in the ClockTower. Also it was good to see Aman Verma back at the NMG!

Yes I spoke with Aman Verma. A really nice guy. He had to watch the match from the warmth of the clocktower seats at the top of the stairs because the cold affects the injury to his jaw.  The good news is that he hopes to be back in training next month.

The Pitching in Northern Premier League @NorthernPremLge

5-1 win for @ilkestontown_fc keeps them top of the @PitchingIn_ Midlands whilst @BelperTownFC remain 1pt behind.
@StamfordAFC1896 win against Carlton see them switch in the table with @ShepshedDynamo stopping Coleshill pulling level.
@yaxleyfc go 4 clear of bottom 5 who all lost

Richard Stainsby has signed for Spalding United and did Ilkeston a favour yesterday by helping them to take points off Chasetown.
Shepshed also did us a favour by holding Coleshill to a goalless draw despite having Shaquille O'Neil Brooks sent off.
Stamford are now showing the form that we knew they were capable of with an impressive 3-1 win at Carlton.

Our next two matches are going to be real tests against in form teams :
Sporting Khalsa (away) who beat us at the NMG and
Stamford (home) who will be desperate to make up for our win on their ground.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

Sat 4th December 2021   Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town  5  Wisbech Town  1
Ilkeston’s winning sequence was stretched to nine games as they coasted to victory over Wisbech in the pouring rain. Three players, Adam Chapman, Jared Bird and Tommy Williams recorded their first goals for the club and leading scorer Zak Goodson struck twice.
The visitors had an early setback when an injury on 7 minutes forced them to make an early substitution. Ilkeston’s first chance fell to Goodson but Luke Pearson made the save. Chapman then freed Williams whose cross found Ollie Brown-Hill but his attempt on goal went the wrong side of the post. There was then an opportunity for Wisbech but Dylan Edge dragged his shot wide. Ilkeston were then rescued by Kieran Fenton whose superb block denied Toby Allen a goal scoring chance. Remaye Campbell found Goodson who got past the keeper but couldn’t turn the ball in from the tight angle. A goal finally came on 33 minutes when Chapman’s corner found a way past everyone and nestled into the top corner of the net. There was almost a quick reply from Wisbech but Edge’s strike was kept out by Ross Durrant.
Two minutes after the restart Jared Bird doubled Ilkeston’s lead with an excellent strike. On 58  minutes Durrant saved well from Allen but a minute later it was 3-0. Charlie Wakefield raced through and with the goal at his mercy squared the ball unselfishly for Goodson to fire into the open goal. Five minutes later right back Tommy Williams broke into the Wisbech area and picked his spot just inside the far post. The visitors kept pushing forward and were rewarded when Edge got one back. They nearly scored again shortly after but were denied by Durrant’s fine save. Goodson completed the scoring on 81 minutes with a cracker into the top corner.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

I was asked why Kieran Fenton doesn't get much of a mention. In my opinion he's been outstanding in most games. He's one of those players who is taken for granted. He makes many a saving tackle and is great at bringing the ball out of defence to start an attack. To me, he's the main man in our defence and he's not the team captain for nothing.
Another reliable player like Kieran Fenton is Ross Durrant. Yes he's noticed when he pulls off an outstanding save but he often keeps us in games with things that go unnoticed.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

Kieran is incredibly cool under pressure and is capable of side stepping an on rushing with ease. His distribution is excellent and yes I think he his sometimes taking for granted. There are a number of games where he would have won Man of the Match if it was up to me.
Charlie Wakefield is another player who does not the plaudits he possible deserves. His all action midfield displays are impressive and I believe it will be between him and Kieran for Player of the Year.
However we have a lot of games to go and they will probably both now have a serious dip in form so forget everything I have just said.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

I will own up I wasn't to convinced about Fents but now omg he's has been brilliant . But as a team we have been sooo good. The players don't panic they just know what they have to do. How many times have they have started slow but blown the opposition away in the second half.
My mate from work has been down now fir four matches and he rates Charlie very highly . For a young lad he's quality . His words not mine but I do agree .
Now for very hard have on Sat game v Khalsa. Then a week later .. the big one v Stamford . They are out  for us in big way . Hopefully there will be a BIG crowd to cheers us on.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Wisbech Town : Sat 4th December 2021

Very interesting after-match interview with Wayne Hallcro at the end of the Wisbech game. He explained that one of the reasons behind our successful run was the togetherness and team spirit. He said that we have reached a point where every one knows their job and we stick to the game plan. There’s never an easy game but the winning run brings confidence and momentum.

In my opinion, It helps that we now have a settled team and a bench that if called upon does not reduce the effectiveness of the team. As a supporter we are in the enviable position where we go into every game with expectancy. But as Mark Duffy said in the interview, the winning run will come to an end some time. I don’t think it will be at Khalsa. I think we will avenge the defeat they inflicted on us early season. However the following match against Stamford will be a severe test. As Kev Cross said, Stamford are going to be really up for this one and right now I think I would be happy to take a point.
