Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

.

If we needed a wake up call before the big match we certainly got one against Sporting Khalsa. Khalsa may have done us a favour by making it more important than ever that we win the Stamford match or at least don't lose it.

Both teams will be massively psyched up for this crucial game.

It's going to be a carnival occasion in front of a possible 2000 attendance so let's hope that the big crowd and the team get the NMG rocking.

Take up the free admission offer and attend this very special occasion.

Stamford have advertised the free admission on their website so hopefully they will bring a good number of supporters.

It's sure to be a Christmas cracker and hopefully under the new floodlights.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

i have took 2000 of the Christmas looking  flyers between four schools so hopefully that can generate a bigger crowd. But i was to late to put on the free Santa`s grotto with present on it . This is something the club and myself should look at in the future although i did ask if it was ok to do. The online flyer looks good so will push both on social media ......Would be great to see a crowd of 2000 down at the NMG .

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Have We Met Before?

We have played the men from Rutland many times before. The first encounter was in 1955 on the 3rdSeptember in the Central Alliance at Stamford’s previous home on Hanson’s Field. Ilkeston won the game 2-1.

The line ups for this first game were:-
Stamford:- Hall, Fenn, Young, Clark R, Goodwin, Sharpe, Beck, Pell, Lawrence, Ayton and Clark I.
Ilkeston Town:- Knibbs, Baker, Darwin, Commander, Smith, Hackland, Ledger, Faulconbridge, Marsh, Johnson and Blount.

The match report in the Nottingham Football Post points out that Fenn was only playing because Clarke G was getting married. The Daniels started brightly and took the lead through Sharpe with a penalty on 11minutes. Marsh set up Ledger for the equaliser on 25 minutes and Ilkeston won the game when Marsh scored in the second half. The win maintained Ilkeston unbeaten start to the season but Stamford had impressed in their first venture in the Central Alliance. At this point of the season Ilkeston were top of the table and Stamford were mid table. By the end of that season the Robins were second and the Danield remained in mid table.

Ilkeston had the better of the early games and it was only on 1962 after seven games that Stamford won an encounter when they beat the Robins 1-0 in the Midland Counties League.

Overall the clubs have played each other forty-two times in League and Cup competitions with Ilkeston winning twenty-three times and Stamford just eleven. The highest scoring game was 5-4 to Stamford in 2007 in a game that the Robins present boss Martin Carruthers made a substitute appearance. The biggest victories for Ilkeston where in 1956 and 1957 when they recorded two 5-0 victories. Stamford’s biggest victory was in 1964 when they defeated Ilkeston 4-0.

In the four games the clubs played against each other between 1965 and 1967 Stamford conceded four consecutive own goals in and between 1970 and 1971 Roger Rann scored eight goals in four games against Stamford.

Ilkeston have scored a total of ninety-eight goals against Stamford and conceded sixty-two. Today’s Robins will be happy to get to their century of goals as long as Stamford do not score three or more.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

'

A win against Stamford will put us right back on track. The loss against Sporting Khalsa was just a blip. We didn't play badly and the result could have gone either way.

Stamford are a very good side and this is another game that could go either way. I think home advantage and a big partisan crowd could swing it our way but we need to be at our best and our supporters need to play their part.

Stamford are currently seven points behind Ilkeston and will know that a defeat will be a real setback to their promotion hopes so I think they will be more concerned with not losing than winning. They are likely to defend in depth and counter attack at speed, something they did to good effect on their last visit to the NMG.

The Ilkeston players have to remember that they won at Stamford  in August quite comfortably. The team that day was ;
1 Durrant, 2 Bennett, 3 Spence, 4 Wakefield, 5 Maguire, 6 Fenton, 7 Marzano, 8 Goodson, 9 Campbell, 10 Troke, 11 Tait.
Subs :  12 Carvell, 14 Irvine, 15 Verma, 16 Rogers, 17 Stainsby.

Eight of that starting XI should be in the side this Saturday. Add to those eight, Williams, Chapman and Bird and we have a more experienced team.

After all of their efforts to make tomorrow a successful occasion let's hope all goes well and we get decent weather and a good turnout. The match is sure to be a cracker under the new brighter floodlights with both promotion chasing teams desperate to win.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

.

From the Rutland and Stamford Mercury

Stamford AFC visit Ilkeston Town in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division
Published: 17 December 2021

Stamford manager Graham Drury is hoping a bumper crowd for Saturday's clash with table-topping Ilkeston will spur his side on as they look to cut the gap on the Northern Premier League Midlands Division leaders.

The Robins are offering free admission to both sets of supporters for the crunch clash at the New Manor Ground on Saturday.

With Ilkeston already one of the best supported clubs in the division, the Daniels boss is relishing the clash as his side aim to reduce the seven-point deficit on their table-topping hosts.

He said: "These are the games that you should be looking forward to and wanting to play in.

"We know that their support will make some racket and noise but that should spur us on because it's always good playing in front of big crowds.

Stamford go into the clash having missed the chance to make the most of Ilkeston falling to a 4-2 away defeat at Sporting Khalsa last weekend.

The Daniels were held to a 2-2 draw at home by bottom-of-the-table Soham Town Rangers and dropped out of the play-off places in midweek following Coleshill's 1-1 draw at Daventry.

And manager Drury is looking for a response from his side as they also seek to avenge a 3-1 home defeat by Ilkeston on the opening day of the season.

He added: "It's a tough task on Saturday because Ilkeston have signed some quality players. They have recruited well and are top of the league for a reason.

"I think the first game of the season could have gone either way though. We had a great chance to make it 1-1 and would then probably have gone on to win the game.

"We didn't take it and ended up pushing and got caught twice to lose it.

"Ilkeston can perhaps afford a draw on Saturday so will their mind-set be about not losing to us because we want to go there and win a game of football like we always do.

"The outcome on Saturday won't define the season, but results like the games against Histon and Soham could because we haven't put them to bed.

"They have cost us because, if you put those four points onto our total, then we're in a good position to be challenging Ilkeston.

"We have to go and try to win the game and it will be about the desire of the boys to want to put the wrongs right.

"They have done it time and time again and hopefully we can go there on Saturday and be up for the challenge.

"We will need to get used to their new 4G pitch, but we won't be looking for excuses. We will be going there to give it our best shot.

"We will have to win the battle first and then hopefully have the quality to put the ball into the back of the net and keep it out the other end which is the be all and end all of it."

Stamford will be without Mike Armstrong following his sending off at the weekend but Cameron Johnson will return to the squad along with Joe Burgess who played his first game of the season following a knee injury on loan at Deeping Rangers on Saturday.

He has been recalled from his short spell at the United Counties League Premier Division North club following Armstrong's dismissal on Saturday.

Drury explained: "I have had to pull Joe back in with Mikey out. It is unfortunate for Deeping because I did say that he would play a couple of games for them.

"It's needs must though because I didn't foresee Mikey's sending off. I will apologise to Daniel French (Deeping manager) for that but we have to look after our own house first."

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

.

So, according to the Rutland and Stamford Mercury, The Daniels are full of confidence and will be going for the win.

It really is a six pointer that could go either way.

Which team will be having the happier Christmas?
Will Stamford avenge their opening day defeat or will Ilkeston consolidate their position at the top?
Ilkeston supporters will be hoping that the match will not be a "Chasetown" or a "Walsall Wood" repeat.

For those not able to attend today, you can follow all the updates here on WhiteBall from 3pm.
For those at the game, you can follow the regular score updates from the other matches that matter.

Enjoy the match and stay safe.

Kickoff time approaches. It doesn't look like the crowd we were hoping for. It's damp but not raining.

Here come the teams : Craig Lamont is at the ready with his camera.

Ilkeston wear their home kit.  Stamford are in all blue.

ilkeston are attacking the car park end.

We're off ....

Confident start by Stamford. Free kick to Stamford at corner of area.  It curls out for a goal kick but Stamford are on the front foot.       0-0       8 mins

Brown-hill shot is blocked, it falls to Troke whose shot is wide. Another Stamford fee kick in a dangerous position. The cross is headed over the bar by no. 9. Goodson wins ilkeston a corner.  It's headed clear.        0-0     15 mins

Stamford must be wondering why they're not ahead. They've had so many chances. Ilkeston haven't looked like scoring.  Stamford 8 shoots first time and it only just wide.  Amazing it's still 0-0       35 mins
