Market Drayton voted out their Tory MP last week and their team are currently 6-0 down to Precot Cables after 45 minutes. Wonder if their manager's job is as secure as Boris Johnson's?

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Stamford are still on top   Official gate is 1621. Most of the play is in Ilkeston's half. Goodson effort is deflected over for a corner. Almighty scramble in the Stamford goal but eventually keeper drops on the ball.  goodson then fouled on edge of area wide. Free kick is cleared           0-0         68 mins

In the end possibly a good result for Ilkeston Town? They still head the table and Stamford are still seven points below the Robins in sixth place.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

.

Sat 18th December 2021  Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town  0  Stamford  0
Ilkeston had goalkeeper Ross Durrant to thank for a point against fellow promotion chasers, Stamford. Durrant made a string of saves including a penalty to keep Stamford at bay in a first half dominated by the visitors. Over 1600 watched the game and they nearly saw Ilkeston snatch a win in the dying moments.
Stamford began with confidence but Ilkeston created the first real chance. Ollie Brown-Hill jinked his way into the Stamford area and played the ball to Alex Troke but Troke’s effort went wide. Stamford hit back and Duffy and Morgan both went close with headers. Stamford were then denied three times in quick succession. First, Duffy forced Durrant to save brilliantly then two follow up shots were superbly blocked by Fenton and Bennett. Morgan then ran 50 yards before unleashing a powerdrive that Durrant held onto. On 40 minutes Chitiza was brought down by Maguire for a Stamford penalty. Vince’s spot kick went bottom right but Durrant got there to the biggest cheer of the afternoon.
Ilkeston did better in the second half but Stamford continued to dominate possession without really threatening. On the hour Goodson’s shot was deflected for a corner then Campbell had a shot blocked on the line. With five minutes left a long shot from Chapman was tipped over as Ilkeston sensed they could win. On 90 minutes Goodson appeared to be brought down in the area but Ilkeston’s appeals were waved away.  Then right at the death Maguire headed what looked like the winner but a defender amazingly headed off the line. What a finish by Ilkeston but Stamford did not deserve to lose.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Stamford will be smarting at not winning but if you don't score it means nothing . I learnt that out years ago. Yes we should have been down and out but weren't . At the end we should have had a penalty plus one off the line . Great game though . Motm mmmmmmmmm Think it might be Ross . Quality.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Best side we’ve played this season by a mile

Don’t let their league position fool you. If we finish above them we’ll win it

Didn’t get a grip of the midfield or really click going forward. When Chappy came on his organisational ability got us further up the field from where we could mount some attacks

Could have nicked it at the end but Stamford edged it and would have been gutted to leave with nothing

Top of the table at Xmas. Sounds / feels good doesn’t it?

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

This league seems to be getting harder now as the lower teams are fighting back . The like of Shepshed ,Bedworth,  Khals and Yaxley are putting in some good results. This league is going to go to the wire with teams winning then you think they will pick up more points but dont . Look at Stamford for example , they play some great football just look at yesterday but the fail to pick all the  points v Histon and Soham ( no dis respect to them by the way) . So back to the very hard few matches next v Shepshed and Belper , four points from these two games i will be happy ...

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

In my opinion Stamford’s performance yesterday makes them the best team we have played against.  They were superb, especially the first half when they just didn't allow us to play. The brilliant Ross Durrant and some "body on the line" defending kept us from being three or four behind. We were well happy to take a point right up to the final five minutes. We then realised that we could win it and came close to doing so. The incident where Zak went down in the area must have been very close to being a penalty and the headed goal line clearance nearly gave us an unlikely victory.
Great cameo appearance by James Carvell who came on late in the game and ran at the Stamford defenders causing them all sorts of problems.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

What a chastening experience that was. The sort of game where you learn exactly where you stand. It looked like a Step 3 team playing a Step 4 team. Stamford are still the yardstick in the league. They've been very good for the last, what, 3 seasons? I think you'd have to say they deserve a promotion.

They're a big, strong, physical, athletic side and they were on it from minute one (I wonder if it played into the mentality of all players that, being 7 points behind, it was probably more important for Stamford to win the game than Ilkeston?). They were a yard quicker than us in thought and deed. I didn't think they had one or two outstanding players yesterday, they were just very good all over the pitch. Having seen Basford United a couple of times this season, I've no doubt that Stamford would do ok in a Step 3 league. If we went up I think we'd have to strengthen in most areas of the pitch.

For me that was a game to pack the midfield, to try and get control of the middle of the park and stop the rampaging runs of the likes of Rob Morgan. Wakefield and Bird just couldn't cope which led to our back four having a torrid time, trying to repel wave after wave of attack. And to that end, why was Brown-Hill playing instead of Chapman? Did our management team think Chapman didn't have the legs to cope with Stamford's pace and athleticism? He's a terrific technician with a wise head on his shoulders who has been round the block a few times, and experienced players like that read the situation they're in and find a way to be effective. In previous games we've started to lose control when he's been substituted in the second half.

Fair play to our lads though. They were all committed to the cause, and they put their bodies on the line to try and block the crosses and shots coming in, and they battled and battled to try and hang in there in the game. You never know, that could be a very important point we won yesterday.

I wonder how many of the Ilkeston players you think would get in the Stamford team? Jeez, wouldn't want to face them in the play-offs; my nerves couldn't handle it.

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Think Chappy was carrying a niggle hence his exclusion

We looked better with his know how after the break but were second best in large parts of the game

I’d like us to have a look at 4 4 2 to be harder to play through. Maybe Zak wide right & Charlie left. Or Reidy could come in behind the front man. I don’t pick the team of course!

My immediate concern is how easy it is to create chances against us at the minute. Wisbech had 6 sights of goal. Khalsa and Stamford 8 or 9 each

That said we’re top at the half way stage. If offered it back in August we’d have taken it for sure. And we’re 4 clear of Stamford if they win their game in hand. 5 if you include goal difference which could be vital come April

Onward & upward and Merry Xmas all

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Reaction from Lewis from Stamford AFC after Saturdays game!

"Very unlucky but proud of the team today. Went toe to toe with the best team in the league and deserved all 3 cherries. Once again we came across a great keeper, very hard to keep on using that excuse but thats how it is
Have a good Xmas Dannies Fans!"

Cant argue with that! I like the 'best team in the League' comment as we usually say that about Stamford!

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Comment from Richard Baker from Stamford and a message for the Stamford manager Graham Drury.

"Graham, we took on the top team in the league and showed them beyond dispute that we are the BEST team in the league. Best display I’ve seen from SAFC in years. Bravo"

Fairly accurate statement on all points!

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Graham Drury replies the aforementioned Richard re early season form

"Thanks Richard if we didn't have so many players missing in the first 2 months of the season I believe we would be well clear still a long way to go."

Personally I am quite relieved they struggled early doors especially in the first league game of the season!

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Jim Cripps from Stamford gives his thoughts on Saturdays game

"What a match today - Two good sides but how Stamford didn’t have it done by halftime. Again another defensive blockade & Cat of a keeper! The lads were top draw"

Ross "Cat of a keeper!" Wow I bet he is too young to have seen Peter Bonetti in his pomp especially against West Germany in the 1970 World Cup quarter final! Ask you Dad Ross!

Re: Countdown to the big one : Dec 18 : Ilkeston v Stamford

Ilkeston Town owner David Hilton giving an honest assessment of the day!

“I’d like to thank everyone who braved the cold today and came to the game. 0-0 does not do the game justice but would of taken that at HT@StamfordAFC1896 were an excellent side Top at Christmas and can’t ask any more from our squad. Merry Christmas and have a safe journey home”

Paul M Brown gives a similarly honest view of proceedings.

“I agree. Stamford were excellent. We are finding ways of picking up points even when we it is difficult to impose our style of play. A good battling performance and some great blocks to keep Stamford at bay.”

Dan Westwell Lensman for the Non League Paper

“One of the best 0-0’s I’ve ever photographed.Could’ve been 10 goals in that game! Some brilliant saves and last ditch defending including a few goal line clearances, fantastic entertainment and all for free for everyone there too  Look out for the @NonLeaguePaper tomorrow”

With our very own pick of the pics Craig Lamont two of the best lensmen in this or any League!
