I am going 2-2 Troke pen and Goodson for us! Halesowen to score first and then we equalise then they go 2-1 after a defensive howler. Then with ten minutes to go kicking towards the Clocktower Zak Goodson who had so far done very little. Gets the ball takes it inside two Yeltz defenders and bends it in to the top corner from the edge of the area. We have a chance in the last minute but miss it when it would be easier to score. man of the Match is Chapman but the fans vote for Zak again cos they love him and he wins games (or rescues draws). Crowd 2,287. We have a big love in with the Halesowen fans and everyone goes home happy!

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

Sat 29th January 2022   Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town  2  Halesowen Town  2
Ilkeston were twice pegged back in this top of the table clash in front of a 2428 attendance but a draw was probably a fair result. Halesowen edged the first half but were more than happy to take a draw after Joshua Hawker’s red card.
Halesowen made the stronger start and the first chance fell to winger Chris Lait who raced clear but put his shot wide of the far post. Lait then made a chance for McKauley Manning which Ross Durrant did well to save. Ilkeston went ahead on 26 minutes when the ball fell to Alex Troke to the right of the goal and he hit a screamer into the near top corner which Platt couldn’t get close to. Manning made himself a decent chance when he cut inside the penalty area at speed but his effort flew past the post. Just before half time Richard Gregory was denied by an excellent save by Durrant and the Yeltz could feel disappointed to be behind.
After the restart Ilkeston created more chances. A Remaye Campbell shot was deflected wide and Platt saved well from Charlie Wakefield. A Zak Goodson effort hit Campbell as Ilkeston looked for a second but on 76 minutes Halesowen levelled through Lait. Ten minutes from time Hawker was sent off for a foul on Troke and Ilkeston immediately took advantage when Goodson was played through by Campbell and fired past Platt. Despite being a man short Halesowen pushed forward and were rewarded when Simeon Coboune delighted the away fans with another equaliser. It was then Ilkeston’s turn to press forward and Platt saved brilliantly from a Jared Bird volley. There was another big chance for Halesowen before Platt saved Campbell’s header right at the death. The draw leaves both teams still neck and neck with Chasetown now only one point behind.

Great game. Fair result

If Platt’s save from Rem’s late header was a ‘wonder save’ though I’m getting my gloves out. He headed it straight at him from 8 yards resulting in a simple catch without having to dive or move his feet!

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

Probably a minority view, but I was frustrated and disappointed with that performance. Halesowen were nothing special and were there for the taking.

With our usual second half 'blitz' we'd have won that game reasonably comfortably, but we just weren't committed in getting men forward, in open play or for free kicks or corners. Campbell battled manfully but he ploughed a lone furrow for most of the game. Gibson was anonymous and Wakefield was absolutely wasted at left back. It's like we were playing for a 1-0 win; we aren't good enough to do that, it is most definitely not our style, and who wants to watch that kind of performance?

Instead of imposing ourselves on the game like we usually do, we sat back thinking we could soak up the opposition pressure. That's just asking for trouble. We created next to nothing until the last few minutes of the game and only showed any real attacking intent after they drew level. Yes, we could have won it at the end but we also could have lost it.

For me, the management team got that one wrong. What an opportunity wasted.

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

Great post Nicky. I must admit that I was mystified when I saw Charlie Wakefield at number 3 on the team sheet. He is our most creative player going forward and yesterday his ability was wasted.
We really miss Billy Bennett when he's not playing. Top, top player.
I would have preferred Stern Irvine at Number 3, Wakefield in midfield and Gibson starting on the bench.
Of course it's easy to be wise with hindsight but Halesowen are a decent side with players capable of scoring goals. I've always admired Christopher Lait who is always a threat.
We had a great opportunity to put daylight between us and Halesowen. We missed out but a draw keeps us with our destiny in our own hands for the time being. 13 cup final to go.

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

For me we’re just too open & easy to create chances against

The defence has no real structure/ shape to it. Conceding 10 chances against crap opposition when we know we can score 5 is ok. But against top teams it isn’t

Hopefully the ‘you score 3 we’ll score 4’ mentality will see us through. But I’d like to see us be more safety first and build on clean sheets

That said we’re top and it’s never dull. Just hope the approach doesn’t trip us up

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

I normally like to talk about the match 1st but this time my man of the match rem's

What a season this lad is having up front for us. Goodson and troke get the headlines but Campbell runs off the ball, on the ball, up for headers and holding the ball up is second to none. For me he is one of the reasons we are having a great season.

The match.

It had everything hitting the woodwork, ball cleared off the line, great tackles, a red card, 1st v 2nd going for it head to toe, the penalty which wasn't given and a last minute change to win the game.

Like dick has said we are a bit gun hoe at times 2-1 up with 5 minutes to go we are pushing for a 3rd instead of keeping the ball, this is what I don't understand.

Our team selection

It's always good to say after the lord mayor's show but I think our management got this one wrong, Charlie at left back and Montel starting big mistake. Charlie has been one of our better players this season, up and down the left hand side working with Billy, so why on earth wasn't OBH not playing left back(don't know what he as to do to get a game) played left back for Stamford for a couple of seasons.

Before the match I would have took a point so 13 more cup finals and we are still top of the league

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

I thought Campbell had a great game but my Man of the Match was yet again was Adam Chapman. I know he's not the most athletic looking player but he appears to have so much time, his decision making is so good and he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. I thought we looked less solid in defence than we have done of late but I put that down to how good Halesowen are. I still think we are the best team in this league and we must be favourites to win it. The only way I think we can fail is if we get complacent against some of the lower ranked sides i.e. Corby Town next week. I would like to think Stamford who were my favourites are too far behind despite buying the most prolific player in the league John Margetts from Belper. I wonder how Jack Duffy now feels about turning Ilkeston down now that Stamford have signed his replacement?

Re: Ilkeston v Halesowen : Sat 29th January 2022

What a pity the big match was spoiled by two incidents. It’s quite possible that the person who threw the flare onto the pitch and the two who damaged Glyn’s car were not proper supporters. Apart from those, the Halesowen supporters' behaviour was exemplary and contributed to a great atmosphere.

I didn't realise at the time, that the flare would cause damage our pitch.
