The Run-in

.

Run-in RoundUp

Sat 5th March 2022

Only five matches were played this weekend and the top three all dropped points.
Leaders Ilkeston were held to goalless draw at Spalding.
Lawrence Gorman’s late equaliser earned Carlton a point against second placed Halesowen. It was a remarkable effort by the Millers because they lost their keeper to a bad injury early on and had to play most of the match with an outfield player in goal. Three times the Yeltz led but three times Carlton came back. Richard Gregory scored twice for Halesowen taking his tally to 16.
Third placed Chasetown’s promotion hopes received a setback after a 0-4 home defeat to Stamford. It ended a run of seven consecutive Chasetown wins and keeps alive Stamford’s slim title hopes.
Ilkeston stay top with 69 points, followed by Halesowen with 68, Chasetown with 66 and Stamford with 60.
In the other games Lewis White and James Clifton each scored twice for Corby who beat Histon 6-1 while Loughborough Dynamo ended a run of four straight defeats with a victory against Wisbech.

Next week sees a massively important match between Chasetown and Ilkeston while Halesowen travel to Corby. Halesowen will be aware that the Steelmen are unbeaten in their last three matches scoring 13 goals in the process. Stamford travel to Bedworth.

We've been saying for weeks how close it is at the top. After Saturdays results it couldn't be closer. The top three Ilkeston, Halesowen and Chastown are now level on 69 points, each with seven matches to play. Stamford moved within six points of the top three following their win at Bedworth who are now winless in their last six matches. Belper recorded only their third draw when they shared the points at Cambridge while Yaxley pulled off a surprise by winning at Carlton. The first versus third clash was won by Chasetown with a late Joey Butlin strike. Ilkeston stay top on goal difference but have picked up just five points from their last four matches and failed to score in three of them. Coleshill kept alive their playoff hopes by beating Histon with a brace by Kai Tonge. Corby are now unbeaten in four after holding Halesowen. Sam Moore scored twice for the Steelmen including a last gasp equaliser. Halesowen have now dropped four precious points by conceding late equalisers in their last two matches. Daventry’s improved form continued with a win against Sporting Khalsa while basement side Soham Town Rangers earned a point at Loughborough. Shepshed saw off Wisbech and Sutton Coldfield made it three games without defeat with a draw at Spalding.

Run-in RoundUp

Sat 19th March 2022

Belper Town  2  Daventry  Town  1
Halesowen Town 0  Chasetown  2
Histon  2  Bedworth United  2
Ilkeston Town  3  Coleshill Town  2
Soham Town Rangers  1  Corby Town  3
Sporting Khalsa  2  Shepshed D  3
Stamford  1  Spalding United  0
Sutton Coldfield  0  Carlton Town  1
Wisbech Town  2  Cambridge City  3
Yaxley  1  Loughborough Dynamo  3

Chasetown made a big statement by winning at Halesowen and not many expected that. All three promotion contenders have dropped points recently but Chasetown have dropped the least. After losing to Stamford they’re back in the groove beating both Ilkeston and now Halesowen. Ilkeston and Halesowen have both stuttered similarly drawing twice as well as losing to Chasetown. Halesowen are still in there with an automatic promotion chance but they need Ilkeston and Chasetown to drop points in their remaining six matches.

Belper consolidated their place in the final playoff position with a win against Daventry after Todd Jordan’s late winner. The big match between Halesowen and Chasetown was won by the Scholars in front of 1727 spectators at the Grove. Joey Butlin and Liam Kirton both scored inside the last 15 minutes. Former promotion favourites Halesowen are now winless in their last three and this defeat leaves them three points behind Ilkeston and Chasetown. Charlie Lewis earned Histon a point against Bedworth with an added time leveller. Histon have drawn their last three home games. Ilkeston held on to top spot after beating Coleshill 3-2. Kieran Fenton scored twice as Ilkeston led 3-0. Coleshill staged a remarkable come back but couldn’t find an equaliser. Corby extended their unbeaten run to five games against Soham Town Rangers. Sporting Khalsa were surprised by Shepshed Dynamo while Stamford eased past Spalding United where a Jack Duffy goal in the first minute settled the outcome. There was also a single goal decider at Sutton Coldfield who lost to Carlton Town. Cambridge moved up to 8th after coming from behind to beat Wisbech 3-2. Sam Bennett scored twice for Wisbech who had Nathan Kelly sent off. Finally, two very late goals gave Loughborough Dynamo the points at Yaxley.

Re: The Run-in

For me there are only two teams who are going for it , Chasetown and Stamford . Us and Halesowen seem to me to be bottling it losing points at places where they should be getting more . Yes  Chasetown lost big time to Stamford but fair play to them they have fought back and now stand joint top with us . Us ? Well we are riding our luck far to much for my liking but we are suppose to have one of the easier run in`s . Well at this moment in time i dont think so. Again i hope they ram that down my throat and prove me wrong .

Halesowen Manager's thoughts after Chasetown defeat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnkfpKixrjQ

Halesowen manager Paul Smith seems resigned to being in the playoffs after losing to Chasetown.
So is it a straight fight between Ilkeston and Chasetown ?
If so who will hold their nerve?
Chasetown have hit top form at the right time. Ilkeston probably have the strongest squad.

I know it’s frustrating right now, but we have no choice but to stay positive, yeltz fans are unbelievable, over 1700 there today and youve been let down by us all, apologies to everyone who was there, stick with us, we will do all we can to put it right .

Just doing the maths... Ilkeston have 72 points, 6th placed Carlton have 56. With six matches left, they can only reach 74. So,one more Ilkeston win, means we are guaranteed at least a place in the play offs.

FIRST TEAM NEWS : Guess who's back
HALESOWEN TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB are delighted to announce the return of a firm fans favourite.Paul Smith has moved swiftly to re-sign Midfield General Robbie Bunn before transfer deadline day. Robbie was signed by Paul Smith in the summer of 2019 and went on to make 69 Yeltz appearances scoring 16 goals and played an important part of our FA Trophy run before leaving for personal reasons last year.

On re-joining the Yeltz Robbie has this to say, ''I am delighted to be back at the Yeltz for the remainder of the season. Although there’s not many games to go, I hope I can make a difference in the run in and help gain the promotion the lads have been working so hard for. I can’t wait to get back out there in front of the Yeltz faithful and support the lads in whichever way that I can. Up the Yeltz!''''

It’s great to have Robbie back for the run in.'' Paul stated, ''I never wanted him to leave, but he needed to for personal reasons at the time and we all respected that. To have him back gives us all a huge lift for the run in.''Welcome back Robbie  Up The Yeltz .

Run in Round Up

Sat 26th March 2022

Bedworth Utd  1  Spalding Utd  0

Coleshill Town  1  Daventry Town  1
Corby Town  2  Carlton town  1

Shepshed v Belper  -  abandoned
Soham T Rangers 1  Halesowen  6
Stamford  6  Sutton Coldfield  0
Wisbech Town 0 Sporting Khalsa  3

No change at the top after the top four all won. Chasetown, Halesowen and Stamford all recorded emphatic victories while leaders Ilkeston needed a late winner to overcome Yaxley. Ilkeston are still  clinging on to pole position but the threat from the other three grows greater week by week.

A single goal by Ryan Nesbitt gave Bedworth the points against Spalding. Chasetown made light a a tricky game against Cambridge City and won comfortably 3-0. Coleshill’s playoff hopes took a knock when Daventry’s Nat Gosnal-Tyler scored a late leveller. Carlton who also have playoff ambitions suffered a 2-1 defeat at Corby who are now six games unbeaten. Histon recorded only their fourth win of the season by beating Loughborough Dynamo. Remaye Campbell scored a last gasp winner for Ilkeston against Yaxley. Third-placed Halesowen bounced back from last weeks defeat to Chasetown with an emphatic 6-1 win at Soham. Fourth-placed Stamford kept the pressure on the top three by also scoring six against Sutton Coidfield with Jonathan Margetts finding the net four times. Wisbech Town’s winless run continued with a home defeat to Sporting Khalsa. Goals by James McGrady and Miracle Okafor in added time made Khalsa’s win look more comfortable than it actually was.

Re: The Run-in

.

The top four's prospects of finishing as Champions

Over the last six matches Ilkeston have dropped  7 points
Over the same period Chasetown have done best dropping only 3 points when they were beaten by Stamford.
Halesowen like Ilkeston have dropped 7 points,
Stamford have dropped only 5 points.

So as we go into the final five fixtures, the momentum is with Chasetown and with Stamford just behind them.

Ilkeston are in pole position though with 75 points and a GD of  +53
Ilkeston are the only team with their destiny in their own hands

Chasetown also have 75 points but an inferior GD of  +39
Chasetown are ready to pounce if Ilkeston slip up but probably have a more difficult run in.

Halesowen are 3rd with 72 points and a GD of  +42
Halesowen need Ilkeston to drop four points and Chasetown to drop 3 points to have any chance of finishing top.

Stamford are 4th with 69 points and a GD of  +47
Although six points behind, Stamford have won their last four and are considered to be the strongest side so are not to be written off. Stamford's goal difference is better than that of Chasetown and Halesowen and only six goals inferior to Ilkeston.

The four contenders each have a two or three testing fixtures to come through :

For Ilkeston it’s :
Apr 02   Cambridge  (away)
Apr 16   Bedworth  (away)

For Chasetown it’s:
Apr 02   Carlton  (away)
Apr 18   Sporting Khalsa  (home)
Apr 23   Spalding   (away)

For Halesowen it’s :
Apr 16 Belper  (away)

For Stamford it’s :
Apr 16  Coleshill  (home)
Apr 23  Carlton  (home)

Belper Town   2  Wisbech Town  1
Cambridge City  1  Ilkeston Town  2
Carlton Town  2  Chasetown  0
Daventry Town  0  Stamford  2
Halesowen Town 3  Histon  0

Sporting Khalsa  3  Soham T Rangers  1

Yaxley  3  Bedworth United  2

The situation at the top took a significant change following this weekend’s fixtures. Ilkeston opened up a three point lead at the top after winning at Cambridge while Chasetown suffered a defeat at Carlton. Halesowen changed places with Chasetown after their win against Histon and Stamford are now only three points behind 2nd and 3rd after beating Daventry.
Belper made hard work of beating bottom club Wisbech and had six players booked. Strikes by Zak Goodson and Montel Gibson gave Ilkeston their crucial win at Cambridge while Chasetown were beaten by two late Carlton goals by Aaron Opoku and Aaron O’Connor. Jonathan Margetts continued his scoring spree for Stamford as they kept the pressure on Halesowen and Chasetown for a high playoff spot. The Yeltz stayed in contention with a comfortable 3-0 win over Histon.

Re: The Run-in

.

After Wisbech beat Histon by 5-1 on Saturday they are now only three points behind them and will feel they have a chance of avoiding automatic relegation.

This is significant for Ilkeston fans as what looked like an easy last match may now be not so easy.

One of Wisbech's final three matches is against Soham Town Rangers so they will feel they can draw level on points with Histon. The second relegation spot could then be decided on goal difference.

Wisbech currently have a better goal difference.
