Ilkeston, Chasetown and Halesowen are all guaranteed a place in the play offs after todays games but more importantly the Robins are still top the table just! Have we got our name etched on this spot or how many get out of jail cards will we need!

Re: Ilkeston v Yaxley : Sat 26th March '22 : ko 3pm

.

It seemed like we had blown our chance of promotion.  Yaxley were defending for their lives. Their keeper was infuriating everyone with his constant time wasting. There was a feeling of hopelessness and frustration. Then in a magic moment we go from despair to euphoria. Nothing beats the emotion of a last minute winner when it really matters.

Re: Ilkeston v Yaxley : Sat 26th March '22 : ko 3pm

Well at least the blatant time-wasters got what they deserved. But jeez we were poor. Again. Two chances for Campbell late in the piece was all we created all game. All it needed was one bit of class, and Reidy's cross and Gibson's header provided that. Let's be thankful for that.

But we look totally disjointed. We're anything but a balanced, settled side. Two midfielders as full-backs, two defensive midfielders, Gibson, Troke, and Goodson playing as a front 3, but they looked like strangers to each other, hardly surprising as they haven't played together before. And because Gibson's playing on the left (how many times did he get caught offside?), Wakefield doesn't know where to play. You need one or two players who can unlock a defense. I know other people are, but I'm not a fan of Brown-Hill or Verma.

The recruitment for me has been poor; have Deeney, Gibson, Bradley, Thomas, and Jemson improved us? Why would you recruit 2 more defensive midfielders? How about getting an offensive midfielder, somebody who can chip in with a goal or two? Gibson will chip in with a worldie from 30 yards every now and then, but was he really what we needed? What possible justification is there for dropping Durrant? Wouldn't surprise me if he just walked.

We don't have anyone who can beat a man, with trickery or pace. The outball was invariably to Goodson but I have no idea what has happened to him; he's a shadow of the player he was earlier in the season. Troke is good in the air and would have won his share of headers had the crosses been anywhere near decent. They weren't.

At this stage of the season it's all about momentum and holding your nerve. Chasetown and Stamford seem to get better game on game. Margetts has scored 10 goals in the last 9 games for Stamford; what an excellent acquisition. And we seem to be regressing, game by game. We don't have an identity anymore. No confidence, no shape, no fluidity, no stability.  We're limping towards the finishing line. You really wouldn't fancy us in the playoffs. If I were Gandhi, I'd be fearing for my job.

And yet, we're still top of the league with 5 games to go. I think next week's game at Cambridge is vital. If we're still top after next week, we've still got a chance of finishing top. And I think us fans are going to be vital to our team. If we have to carry them over the finishing line, then that's what we'll do.

Re: Ilkeston v Yaxley : Sat 26th March '22 : ko 3pm

.

Sat 26th March 2022 :  Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town  1  Yaxley  0
A goal in the 91st minute ended Yaxley’s stubborn resistance and sparked crazy celebrations as Ilkeston’s promotion dream was rescued. Hopes were fading fast when James Reid swung in a centre which at first looked  to be going out but then held in the air. Montel Gibson managed to retrieve it, heading it back across goal for Remaye Campbell to head home.  It was sheer relief after Yaxley had defended so resolutely with ten players for the whole of the second half.
Right from the start it was clear that Yaxley didn’t have much in the way of attacking intent as they packed their defence. It took seven minutes for Ilkeston’s first attempt on goal. Alex Troke played in Gibson whose effort skimmed the Yaxley crossbar. A Charlie Wakefield shot drifted wide and on 17 minutes Ilkeston keeper Saul Deeney came into the action for the first time. The Robins were having nearly all the possession but the Cuckoo’s defenders were keeping them at bay. Just before half time Yaxley’s task became more difficult when Joshua Moreman was shown a straight red for a dangerous challenge on Stern Irvine.
The second half saw much more pressing by Ilkeston but despite wave after wave of attacking Yaxley were standing firm. On 51 minutes Gibson found Troke whose header was too high. Five minutes later Jack Thomas’s rasping effort was tipped over by Will Lakin who then saved Ollie Brown-Hill’s attempt. Lakin pulled off another fine save pushing Wakefield’s shot round the post but despite his heroics he was infuriating the Ilkeston fans with his constant time wasting. There was a big chance for Ilkeston on 85 minutes when Jared Bird’s cross found Campbell but his header went the wrong side of the post. It seemed that the deadlock would not be broken until Campbell’s last ditch winner brought unconfined joy to the Ilkeston fans. In the dying moments of added time Yaxley won a corner but Deeney held on to.Dan Bucciero's header

I was not at the game Trowel but I got the impression that we had more chance than just the two that Campbell had at the end of the game. It appears to me that this season is similar to one when Phil Start was at Ilkeston. We had been in the promotion spots all season but sorted to slip up close to the end. Phil was a bag of nerves. So much so that when we crawled over the line for promotion he did not really enjoy the moment because it had caused him so much stress. And this was a man who had survived horrors in the Falklands War. I still think we can win the the title because we have enough class to beat anyone on our day. Perhaps being given money to strengthen the squad at this late stage backfires somewhat because you have too many options when it might have been easier to work on improving what we already had or at least improving their form. I followed the game from home due having Covid in the house but it was just as nerve wracking as being there especially as we finished so late.

Re: Ilkeston v Yaxley : Sat 26th March '22 : ko 3pm

Thanks for the Phil Start story WhiteBall, I do enjoy your reflections.

It's a tricky one cos you have to temper criticism with the fact that after 33 games of a 38 game season we're top of the league, and we'd all have taken that in August. Our destiny is still in our hands. And, however much Chasetown and Stamford are flying at the moment, they're still behind us; indeed Stamford are 6 points behind us with an inferior goal difference. And Chasetown have got some tricky fixtures left, Khalsa at home and Spalding and Carlton away. So it's far from all doom and gloom.

Stress, yes, we all feel it. Absolute agony. Different kind of stress if you're the manager I'm sure. As fans we get stressed cos we care; our team matters to us, it's important to us. I checked my watch when the second half started yesterday and it was 4:09. You knew with all their injuries and rolling around on the ground and general time-wasting that there would be 5 minutes or so added on, but at 4:55 it was still 0-0, and yes, it was all getting a bit frantic and panicky and stressful. And then 5 minutes later an absolute outpouring of relief and joy. We're still top of the league. The life of a footy fan.

Some fans voiced their dissatisfaction with Gandhi in no uncertain terms yesterday. I just think it's vital that we put this aside for the next 5 games (and hopefully not 6 or 7 games) and put everything we've got into backing the team. Cambridge only average around 250 fans for home games, if we can get 200 or so down there it will be a massive boost to the team.
