Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

Wakefield shot from distance is wide.  Can't remember George making a save.   Good effort by Barnes is wide. Good bit of pressure by Ilkeston ends with an awful cross by Wakefield.Nothing coming off going forward.         0-0    43 mins

Carlton came more into it last 10 mins but Chasetown well on top. Carlton defending well though, limited Chasetown to a couple of clearcut chances.

Deeney save denies City an instant equaliser.  Great play by Campbell and he almost scores.  Corner Ilkeston.  Great Cross by Montel and it's deflected for a corner. 2nd half is a big improvement

It's a game now, totally different from the first half with both sides now looking more dangerous going forward.
Quickly taken free kick creates a chance for Gibson but his shot is blocked
Brown-Hill on for Verma on 77 mins         2-1

Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

An important three points for Ilkeston Town. Thanks to Carlton and Aaron O'Connor we are know three points clear of Chasetown who slip down to third place. So we are three points clear with four games to go!

Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

.

Certainly a game of two halves. The first half was a poor watch with very few chances, The second half was totally different, a much more open game with both sides pushing forward and creating chances,  Ilkeston deservedly went ahead when Goodson reacted first to Gibson’s parried shot. Ilkeston were then on top but Cambridge found an equaliser. The setback was short-lived as Gibson quickly restored Ilkeston’s lead.  With nothing to lose Cambridge give it a go near the end and could have scored again but for a good Deeney save. With Chasetown losing at Carlton, it turnout to be a better than expected day.
Verma was very composed at No 2 and Jack Thomas is getting more involved with each game. I was surprised when Bradley was replaced by Goodson at half time but whatever the reason, it worked. I thought Bradley had played alright. Star performer for me - Stern Irvine.
We now have 3 points breathing space with just four games to play.

Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

I am looking forward to Trowell Nicky's report from the Carlton game. I can't thank Carlton enough has they have given us a bit of breathing space in the run in.  It would be nice to win our next three games and almost wrap up the title before the long trek to Wisbech. Saying all this we still need Halesowen and Chasetown not to win by massive margins and putting our superior goal difference under pressure.
By all accounts we played much better in the second half today and were much closer to our best which is a good sign after a worrying dip in form in recent weeks. So we now look forward to taking on Daventry Town a team we should beat but we can't take them for granted and they will be out to show that are no pushovers. We will have to show them respect but then show them how good we are by being positive and proactive!

Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

Carlton v Chasetown was a classic 'game of two halves'. Chasetown were clearly pumped up and were at Carlton right from the whistle. For the first 30 minutes or so they battered Carlton and could easily have been 2-0 up. But they didn't score and Carlton started to grow into the game.

Tommy Brookbanks changed things around at halftime and it clearly worked. In the second half Carlton got stronger and stronger and were clearly the better team, and Chasetown got more and more frustrated and the players more and more tetchy. I don't think Chasetown had a clear chance in the second half. I have to say the Carlton back line were terrific all game. The midfielder Alex Howes had a very strong second half for Carlton.  Ryan Winter (Chasetown) is a very good centre- back.

I must confess to a bit of whooping and hollering when Carlton scored. Especially after the second goal, which meant the game was safe. Which quickly turned to desperately hoping the Ilkeston boys could hold on for the win to open that gap at the top.

Chasetown probably brought 70 or so fans to the game. On leaving the ground I heard a Chasetown fan, clearly the worse for wear, say to his missus ' can you believe it, we come all this way and they play like that'. We've all been there.

I do like Tommy Brookbanks, he seems to get the best out of what he's got and is a good tactician. Looks like he's got a long history with Carlton. He clearly had a game plan for the game today.  If anyone wants to hear his thoughts on the game, they're here ...

https://youtu.be/R6-6EuT4O-k

Carlton remind me of Basford, two very well run clubs who get very little support. By the way, if anyone fancies a bit of midweek footy, Basford (battling against relegation) are at home to Warrington (fighting for a play-off spot) on Tuesday night. Maybe see one or two of you down there?
