Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

.

Sat 2nd April 2022  Northern Premier League
Cambridge City  1  Ilkeston Town  2
Ilkeston’s automatic promotion chances were given a major boost by this important win against a strong City side who were regarded as one of their toughest opponents in the remaining fixtures. A defeat for the level-pegging rivals, Chasetown, means the Robins have opened up a three point advantage with four matches to play.
The first half saw defences on top. There was an early chance for Mikey Davis as the City  forward benefited from a lucky ricochet but Stern Irvine  got back to rob him. Cambridge defender Yaw Ofosu had a header saved by Saul Deeney before Ilkeston’s first chances half way through the half. First Montel Gibson then Billy Bennett saw fierce shots inside the area blocked in quick succession. Irvine then rescued Ilkeston following a City counter attack before Jared Robson and Connor Barnes saw decent efforts fly wide. The first half ended with Cambridge having had the better chances.
The second half was much more open and Ilkeston showed a marked improvement going forward. Five minutes in, Gibson tested Dan George and Bennett was starting to be threat down the left.  On 57 minutes George saved from Gibson but Zak Goodson was there to slam home the loose ball. Ilkeston had been on top and deserved their lead but City were to strike back through Ryan Ingrey. Two minutes later Ilkeston were ahead again when Gibson’s low shot went in off the post. Gibson had a further chance following a quickly taken free kick but his shot was blocked. Ingrey had an opportunity for City but was thwarted by Irvine then Remaye Cambell had an effort from a tight angle tipped over by George as both sides looked for the next goal. With nothing to lose Cambridge made a late press and Saul Deeney was called upon to tip over a fine effort from Issac Maynard in added time.

CAMBRIDGE CITY MATCH REPORT

MENS FIRST TEAM  1 - 2  ILKESTON TOWN

Home   02 April 2022   Attendance : 235

Ilkeston Town took a big step towards the Northern Premier League Midlands title as they defeated Cambridge City 2-1 at Bridge Road. Whilst the result indicates a routine 3 points for the league leaders, it was anything but as City produced a spirited display that on another day would have secured at least a point if their chances had been converted to goals. Returning to the City line-up was Seb Simpson.  The left back had been missing since the turn of the year with injury and had recently been on loan at Eynesbury Rovers to get match fitness.  The City line-up was also boosted by the return of Jarid Robson who had been absent for the last few games.

The opening period of the game saw little in the way of goalmouth action.  City were having plenty of possession, forcing a number of corners whilst Ilkeston who had Zak Goodson, their leading scorer, on the bench were struggling to find their rhythm. The visitors had their first sight of goal when Montel Gibson saw his shot blocked on the edge of the area.  It was City whothen carved out a decent opening when Connor Barnes set up Isaac Maynard but the midfielder also saw his shot blocked. The next opportunity also came the way of the hosts as the Lilywhites won a corner.  Mikey Davis picked out an unmarked Seb Simpson, but he could only glance his header wide of the target.  Barnes also went close for City as the half came to an end.

Ilkeston came out early for the second half and introduced Zak Goodson to the game.  Whether it was his introduction or what was said by the coaching staff at half time, the visitors definitely started the half with more purpose.  Gibson forced a good save from George, and in the next attack the Robins took the lead.  It was Gibson who once again tested George, but the rebound came out to Goodson who made no mistake to smash the ball into the net. Straight from kick-off, and City should have pulled level.  Robson picked out Maynard, and his effort was well saved by Saul Deeney in the visitors goal.  However, shortly after Deeney was picking the ball out the net as the Lilywhites were level.  Barnes showed good strength and skill, and pulled the ball back to Ryan Ingrey who made no mistake from close range. City were only level for a short period as the visitors got in front no more than 2 minutes later.  The ball was played into Gibson who shot from distance, and his effort beat the outstretched hand of George.  Gibson was in again shortly after, but this time George did well to block the opportunity. Whilst the visitors were looking for a third to put the game to bed, it was City who came closest to getting an equaliser.  First, Ingrey could only head into the arms of Deeney when well placed, and then right at the death the Ilkeston stopper produced a fine save to deny Maynard to ensure his team got maximum points.

The victory for Ilkeston means that due to Chasetown losing at Carlton the Robins are now 3 points clear at the top with 4 games to play.

Re: Sat 2nd April 2022 - Cambridge City v Ilkeston Town

.

The second half was a tonic as the team returned to something like the way we know they can play.  Make no mistake, Cambridge City are a decent side. I don’t know what was said at half time but it worked.
First half :
As in other recent games our opponents played with numbers at the back and keep us at bay. We created very little and Cambridge had the better chances.
Second half :
There was an immediate transformation with Ilkeston now dominating and causing problems for the City defence. Ten minutes in and we’re ahead. That really changes things as Cambridge can no longer just defend. It’s all Ilkeston but Cambridge manage to find an equaliser. We regain the lead quickly which is important. We continue to dominate but can’t find the third goal we deserve. Into the final minutes and Cambridge with nothing to lose push forward. Deeney saves a header then tips one over before the final whistle. After three away games without a goal and a couple of below par home performances this was much better.
