Have to say it's another nervous display from Ilkeston Reid replaced by Wakefield . Daventry so close to a second Forwards header hit one of his own players which stopped it going in Lucky escape but its still 1-1

Thomas shot blocked by defender. Ilkeston are not looking like scoring just now. Brown-Hill is forced to concede a corner. Great Ilkeston move but Campbell can't find the finish. Should have scored. still 1-1

Well we are making it hard in this run in. Don't think my nerves can take any more . Wakefield made a difference in the second half. I do think he is better in the middle .

I would have put Charlie Wakefield on much earlier as I thought James Reid was struggling a bit. I thought we were a bit too defensive in midfield up to Charlie's introduction and then we looked bit more dangerous offensively. We are however making very hard work of winning games and whatever the reasons our displays are nowhere near as creative as they were pre February. But we are winning games and have only lost once since the 11th December 2021. Perhaps winning this league in a consistently flamboyant manner is a bit too much to ask and maybe grinding out is what good teams do. It is definitely not too good for the nerves and I can only imagine what it must be like for the Manager, his back up team and the players!

Sat 9th April Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town 2 Daventry Town 1
This may have been another far from convincing performance but a win is a win and for the fourth consecutive game Ilkeston recorded a victory by the odd goal. It took a late belter by Montel Gibson to settle the nerves and the Robins must surely now be favourites to finish as Champions. All the top four won so Ilkeston maintain their three point lead with just three matches to play.
Daventry belied their lowly position with a confident start. It took Ilkeston 8 minutes to create their first chance. Gibson cut in from the left and his powerful shot brought a top save by James Martin. Ilkeston’s next opportunity came when Jared Bird did really well but no one could make contact on his excellent cross. Daventry replied with an effort by Tom Lorraine which was held by Saul Deeney. The break through came on 38 minutes when Jack Thomas fired home following great work by Ollie Brown-Hill. Daventry then surprised Ilkeston with an equaliser just before half time. A long throw-in into the box caused some confusion and Jack Bowen took advantage with a close range header.
The second half started with a Remaye Campbell effort deflected wide. Taylor Orosz then went close for Daventry causing Deeney to block his close range attempt with his legs. On 54 minutes Deeney slid out of his area holding the ball giving Daventry a set play chance but he held on to the resultant free kick. Ilkeston then had a let off when a Daventry forward’s header hit one of his team mates on the line. Ilkeston’s best opportunity came when Charlie Wakefield played in Campbell who couldn’t provide the finish. With fifteen minutes left the Robins found a winner through Gibson. He received the ball with plenty to do but after shrugging off his opponent he unleashed a cracker into the top corner and Ilkeston comfortably saw out the remainder of the match.

This is like a red rag to a bull to me.
Reid above Wakefield
So but let's go back 10 years when he was fit. Kev Wilson never played him in centre mid. Just don't understand what gandi is doing.

Got to mention Stern what great young player . At 19 what an asset he is to this club. He has just got on with playing and has got his reward . Playing along side Fents will bring loads of experience to his game . He's not fully there yet but at a young age and being a brick wall his game will be better in the future. I often speak to him after games , lovey lad .

I've been singing Stern's praises for a while now. He's young but he's got everything. He's a brick wall, he's got pace and he plays with the right amount of aggression. He's been very patient waiting for his chance. Hope we can keep him.

I can’t understand all the apprehension and unease. Having a stutter when on the verge of promotion is normal. Look at Matlock. Look at Forest last season.
Since the defeat at Chasetown we’ve had four straight wins. There are no easy games and whoever we play, our opponents raise their game so the team deserve massive credit. Just three games to go now and six points should do it.
Halesowen have reduced our goal difference advantage to seven but next Saturday they are away to Belper. The Nailers will be desperate to win to hold on the last playoff spot.
We have a 17 goal difference advantage over Chasetown so they’re unlikely to make that up. Also they have two tricky matches to come against Sporting Khalsa (home) and Spalding (away).
If we win at Bedworth with our two bus loads of support we’re nearly there. Keep believing.

I thought Jared Bird had a good game against Daventry. He covered a lot of ground during the game. He was always there winning or picking up loose balls and finding a team mate. He’s probably not a player that stands out because you don’t see him do anything spectacular although I can remember him getting down the left and putting in a great cross in the first half. He’s the one who intercepts the ball and quickly moves it on to a colleague.

Mark Duffy's Match Report
REPORT: Ilkeston Town 2-1 Daventry Town - Robins win again as they close in on league title
Ilkeston Town once again made life difficult for themselves in their title pursuit but three more points were all that mattered and that’s what they got.
Daventry, struggling towards the bottom of the table but safe from any relegation fears, gave the Robins more problems than the hosts might have expected and made them work for their win, which keeps Martin Carruthers’ men three points clear at the top with three games to go and with goal difference on their side too.
That could mean, all being well, the title will be all but theirs by the time the Easter Bank Holiday comes to an end, but nothing can be taken for granted just yet as the pressure of being top continues to weigh heavily on the Robins players which is reflecting on some of their displays.
Here, they needed a winner from Montel Gibson 14 minutes from time to take the points they ultimately deserved to claim despite some worrying moments throughout but these issues will matter little when all is said and done if silverware is in their hands.
The first chance came nine minutes in when Gibson cut inside and saw his 25-yarder superbly tipped wide by Daventry keeper James Martin. At the other end, Tom Lorraine glanced a header wide from a corner after it had been flicked on at the near post, then Jack Finch also got his head to a set piece moments later but put the ball over the bar – another warning for the hosts.
Gibson headed a corner wide on 25 as Ilkeston tried to get a foothold in the game but thus far they’d been wasteful in possession despite some promising positions, Jack Thomas’s shot from distance next to threaten but wide of the target.
Daventry remained a threat and Lorraine’s low shot saw Saul Deeney fumble before gathering, but it would be Ilkeston who would finally get the lead on 38 minutes. Thomas spread the ball out wide to Ollie Brown-Hill who beat his man down the left and cut back to the penalty spot where Thomas was on hand to fire low into the corner of the net. The Robins needed to keep it tight until the break but having conceded a number of free-kicks in attacking areas, they finally paid for it with the last kick of the half as a set piece was swung in from the left and when it wasn’t dealt with, the ball fell to Jack Bowen who headed home via the hand of Deeney.
The Robins keeper had to push an early second-half effort from Lorraine away from danger as the visitors threatened again in the opening moments, a long throw then causing havoc but Finch’s header was blocked on the line by one of his team-mates.
Sub Charlie Wakefield was introduced on 57 minutes and nearly scored four minutes later, his low shot just past Martin’s right-hand post.
The Robins then should have led on 68 when good work from Wakefield saw him square to Remaye Campbell who, with loads of time to score, somehow put the ball wide from eight yards out.But they were to regain the lead on 76 minutes when Thomas knocked a lovely ball over the top to Gibson and he held off his man before volleying home via a deflection.
The Robins saw the game out with few scares aside from one or two more set pieces and long throws that they just about managed to cope with, results elsewhere meaning the situation at the top didn’t alter as the top four jostle for honours.
Ilkeston: Deeney, Brown-Hill, Bennett, Reid (Wakefield 56), Irvine, Fenton, Goodson, Bird, Campbell (Troke 73), Gibson, Thomas. Not used: Jemson, Maguire, Carvell.
Daventry: Martin, Childs, McNeil, Harris, Burgess, Confue, Ball (Nketia 75), Finch, Bowen, Lorraine, OroszNot used: Coleman, Andrews.

Jared has been one of our unsung heroes this season.
Hopefully his midfield partner chapman will be back for next season

Daventry were a much better side than when we played against them in August and October.Only three of their payers on Saturday played against us earlier in the season (keeper James Martin plus George Ball and Joel Nketia).
Four matches without defeat in Feb/March took them away from relegation danger when they beat Sutton Coldfield, Wisbech and Sporting Khalsa and drew with Bedworth.
With an average gate of 127 they do well to compete at this level.

Is there going to be some lateral movement of clubs at the end of the season?
FROM DAVENTRY EXPRESS
Purple Army happy to go the distance down south
By Mike Tebbitt
Daventry Town’s well-documented wish for a quick return to Southern League football would actually add to the Elderstubbs club’s spiralling fuel bills. To fulfil away fixtures in the Northern Premier League this season the Town will have to travel a total of about 2,156 miles with time on the road estimated at approximately 44 hours.
Travelling time in the Southern League would be only a couple of hours longer with distances involved increasing only marginally by 112 miles.
On the credit side a switch back down south would undoubtedly provide an easier route into step three football
.Neither league provides DTFC with any local derby games. Either the Town are the most southerly club in northern football or the most northerly in southern football.
Bedworth United (29 miles away) and Corby Town (35 miles) are Daventry’s nearest NPL opponents. In the Southern League that would be Kidlington (37 miles) followed closely by Bedfordshire clubs Kempston Rovers, Bedford Town and Barton Rovers.
Soham (90) and Wisbech (80) are currently the longest journeys in the NPL whilst Harlow (86) and FC Romania (74) top the list on the Southern League.
