Sat 23rd April 2022 : Wisbech Town v Ilkeston Town
The season will be decided by this one match. Ilkeston are top, Wisbech are bottom but that counts for nothing as we found out on Easter Monday. We need just one point but relegated Wisbech will want to end their season on a high. We’ve had a brilliant season but have stuttered in the final games under the intense pressure of expectation. We’ve been playing “cup finals” for a while but this one really is. There is no chance to recover after this one. Automatic promotion depends on the 90 minutes at Wisbech.
Whatever team we put out we have to give them 100% encouragement and support from start to finish no matter what. The players want this as much as we do. They have to do it while we just watch. This is our Town, our Football Club. We have to take this opportunity or suffer the unpredictability of the playoffs.

There’s more than just the league title at stake on Saturday when we entertain Ilkeston. The supporters who have cheered on the team all season will have the vote to determine the supporters player of the season. Voting slips will be at the supporters club table. #UpTheFenmen Apr 20, 2022

Title Chases Go To The Final Day 2 days agoBy James Gordon
The NPL East, West and Midlands Divisions title winners will all be decided on the final day.
In the East Division, Liversedge boast a 14-goal and three point advantage over Marske United at the top, after Marske missed an opportunity to pounce on Easter Monday. Liversedge came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Brighouse Town, but Marske themselves could only draw 2-2 at Stockton Town, with Jason Kennedy scoring a late equaliser. Marske host Ossett on the final day, while Liversedge travel to Worksop. Cleethorpes missed an opportunity to clinch third place as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Worksop Town, while Shildon slipped up 2-1 away at Yorkshire Amateur. A win for Stockton Town on final day at Brighouse, coupled with defeat for Cleethorpes at Hebburn, is the only thing that can prevent Cleethorpes finishing third.Shildon can finish fourth if Stockton Town drop points and they beat Frickley Athletic.
The West Division title is in the hands of Warrington Rylands, who just need to beat Bootle at home to claim promotion in their first season in the NPL. Rick Smith’s goal was enough for Rylands to beat 1874 Northwich on Easter Monday, after they had seen rivals Workington slip up at Marine on Saturday. Workington sit a point behind and travel to Market Drayton Town knowing only a win, and a helping hand from Bootle, will help them secure an automatic return to the Premier Division. The other three play-off teams are now locked in, following Runcorn Linnets’ win over Prescot Cables. Lloyd Marsh-Hughes’ 85th minute winner secured the Linnets three points, though a draw would have been enough anyway. Linnets (75) are two points behind third placed Marine (77), with Leek Town sat in between them on 76 points so it’s still all to play for on the final day. Marine welcome Leek to the Marine Travel Arena meaning Runcorn know a win at home to Colne will guarantee them at least fourth place - a draw between Marine and Leek would mean a win sends Runcorn third and a crucial home semi in the play-offs.
Midlands Division leaders Ilkeston Town handed a lifeline to second place Chasetown, as they went down 4-2 at home to Shepshed Dynamo on Easter Monday. Ilkeston boasted a three point lead and a vastly superior goal difference before the defeat, and must now get a result against lowly Wisbech Town on the final day. Chasetown didn’t take full advantage of the slip, drawing 1-1 at home to Sporting Khalsa, which means they’ll need Ilkeston to lose and to themselves win away at Spalding United to take the title. Those results have now dragged Stamford back in to the title race - they host Carlton Town knowing a win for them, plus defeat for Ilkeston and no win from Chasetown would see them win the league. Fourth placed Halesowen Town could still lift themselves in to second place too - they have 80 points, one behind Stamford and two behind Chasetown. The battle for fifth spot will go down to the final day too - with Belper Town maintaining a two-point lead over Carlton Town with a 2-1 win away at Loughborough Dynamo. Belper host Corby Town and Carlton travel to Stamford.
Follow the NPL social media channels on final day to keep up with all the twists and turns.

SATURDAY'S PERMUTATIONS (FROM A CHASETOWN PERSPECTIVE)
BY PAUL MULLINS 5 HOURS AGO
What do we need to do and what can we still do...A crucial Saturday lies ahead. So let's look at what it means to us and what it could mean.League title
If Ilkeston win at Wisbech, they win the league - and congratulations will go to Derbyshire.
If Ilkeston draw at Wisbech, only Chasetown can overtake them but we would have to win 13-0 or a combination of that, 14-1, 15-2 etc...
If Ilkeston lose, any Chasetown win, and we would be league champions.
Play Offs
We are already guaranteed a play off place, so if Ilkeston win the title, where could we finish? If we win at Spalding

Three years ago today
22nd April 2019 was Easter Monday and the day we played against Dunkirk away. Two days before that we had sensationally lost 0-4 to Walsall Wood at the NMG, a defeat that put knocked us off the top of the table with just two matches to play. We were level on points with Wood but they had the better goal difference. We needed to win at Dunkirk and hopefully win big. We did just that and a 7-0 margin of victory meant we now had a better goal difference then Walsall Wood going into the final Saturday.
The final Saturday saw us win the league with a memorable performance and win away from home at Loughborough University. Several hundred Ilkeston fans made the journey to see us lift the trophy.
Tomorrow
So tomorrow’s decider is similar to 2019. It’s an away game opportunity to finish as Champions following a four goal stumble at the NMG. Can we do at Wisbech what we did at Loughborough University? This time, a point will do it. It’s a longer journey than Loughborough but seeing your team in a title decider is a rare event not to be missed. It’s not going to be easy but we could be celebrating with the players at 5pm and you’ll be glad you went.

ILKESTON MATCH INFORMATION
Tomorrow’s game with Ilkeston Town is likely to attract our biggest attendance of the season. Ilkeston are bringing a large contingent of supporters for what they hope will be a day of celebrations.
The football club has made some changes to the usual match day routine to ensure things go as smoothly as possible for both clubs, players, league representatives and supporters.
There will be extra stewards in place to create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere and searches on entry in operation
Because of the significance of the game there will be league representatives attending and we want to show our club in the best possible light.
We look forward everyone coming and enjoying a competitive game of football which will determine the outcome of who wins the Northern Premier League Midland Division.

PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR ILKESTON TOWN AND WISBECH TOWN
Amongst the players who have turned out for both todays are some Ilkeston Town legends.
Keith Alexander
Keith played for Wisbech as a 19 year old youngster after leaving Notts County. He then briefly returned to Wisbech as a 30 year old and scored four goals in six games. Keith then belatedly joined Grimsby Tow and embarked on a career in League Football before eventually returning to Ilkeston Town as a manager and becaming a New Manor Ground legend.
Matt Carmichael
Played five games for Wisbech as a 36 year-old in 200-01 season. He was signed for Ilkeston by Keith Alexander and played a key role in the Robin’s famous FA Cup runs in the 90s. He was a target man who enabled other forwards to feed off his knockdowns. Matt had a spell as manager at Lincoln Moorlands before appearing to retire from football.
Other players who have played for both teams include Liam Marshall, Mason Lee, Conor Green and Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson.

It's quite a stiff breeze in Ilkeston's favour. Good ball forward to Remaye but the wind means he can't catch it.
