Preseason training commenced tonight. It looked like some tough warming up exercises to start with conducted by some specialist trainers. The players then went on Booths for some match practice supervised by Martin and Wayne. There were  a few faces not recognised presumably trialists.

TAMWORTH ARE BACK IN ACTION ON SATURDAY
Pre Season Friendly Game 1, Saturday 2 July KO 3.00pm  Hinckley LRFC v Tamworth

We are back in action for our first pre-season friendly on Saturday and can’t wait to see our supporters again. The destination is a short journey down the A5 to Hinckley Leicester Road FC, against the team that will be starting their first season at step 4 in the Northern Premier League. Last season the club finished in 2nd place in the United Counties League to claim a promotion place.

Hinckley LRFC were formed after the demise of Hinckley United and play at the Leicester Road Stadium, a ground Tamworth have visited on 4 occasions. The last time was for an FA Cup 1st Round tie in Nov 2011 against then Hinckley United. Over 1900 people were at the game which ended in an exciting 2 - 2 draw. Tamworth won the replay and then went all the way to the 3rd Round where we travelled to play Everton in a famous game.

Speaking to the Lambs Website on Wednesday evening, Assistanst Manager Neil Champelovier said. "We are really looking forward to getting back out on the pitch. "Although we still need to confirm our final decision, it is likely that we will give each squad member 45 mins each on Saturday at Hinckley."

For those travelling on Saturday here are the important details

  • Address: Leicester Road Stadium, Leicester Road, Hinckley. LE10 3DR
  • Directions: Take the A5 Southbound. At Dodwells roundabout A5/A47 take 1st exit towards Earl Shilton A47 and Industrial Estates. Go over three roundabouts, straight over traffic lights and at the next roundabout take 3rd exit B4668 towards Hinckley. After 200yds the ground entrance is on the right. Distance from the Lamb 18.7 miles
  • Car Parking: Park in the bottom car park upon arrival (when entering the Stadium site directly on the right opposite the club).
  • Travel by Train: Nearest Station is Hinckley (approx 2.5 miles)
  • Admission: Adults £6.00, Concessions £4,00 Under 16s are free if with a paying adult.

Match summary by Woody

STRATFORD TOWN: 5 Coventry Sphinx: 2
Saturday 2nd July 2022  KO 3pm Arden Garages Stadium Pre-season friendly

BARDS KICK OFF IN UNSEASONAL WEATHER WITH A WIN
The return of non-league football is always eagerly awaited and today it was the first of TEN pre-season friendlies at The Arden Garages Stadium. The Bards entertained Coventry Sphinx in a very untypical July afternoon. The rain finally abated just before kick off but not before soaking the whole surface which made it tricky in the opening few minutes for the players. This was a typical pre-season side for Stratford with a mixture of Trialists, Academy Players and summer signings. Ex Bard Harvey Billing opened the scoring for Coventry Sphinx after just 3 minutes from a corner but Jamie Molyneux showed his class after returning to Stratford with two well taken goals on 12 and 15 minutes.  Luke Downes equalised for Sphinx on the half hour to make it 2-2 but Bards No9 scored to make it 3-2 at the break. The No9 scored again after the break and another trialist made it 5 after 55 minutes. Tired legs made the game open up in the last 15 minutes but this was an excellent work out and a great opportunity for the management Team to get a good look at some prospects as well as minutes for players returning to training this week.

There was plenty to see and admire for Bardy Army supporters returning to the stadium for the new season with TWO stands to check out. And despite the rain many fans looked to get the best seats in the house especially during the second half. The investment and commitment by the Chairman and supported by the Board is clear to see, especially in the infrastructure of the football club as well as building a very good squad for the new season. There was also a new look Fanzone this afternoon with an interview with the Chairman being played over a dedicated PA system and this will definitely be the place to be before the game, when the season kicks off in earnest, with special offers in the Pie and Pint Bar, a new Tuckshop, as well as advanced team news. And of course the usual Club Shop, Programme sales and Supporters Club 50/50. Something to keep an eye on for the Bardy Army.

Next up are Burton Albion on Tuesday evening with a 7.30pm KO and then it’s West Bromwich Albion on Saturday who are the visitors with a 3pm KO. Watch out for information about offers and prices for the remaining pre-season friendlies.

Tuesday's Pre-Season Friendly Round-Up

There was plenty of pre-season action for Pitching In Southern Football League clubs on Tuesday evening.

Premier Division Central

There is some early silverware in Needham Market’s boardroom after they retained the Suffolk Champions Charity Cup after beating Thurlow Nunn League side Ipswich Wanderers 3-1 on penalties at Bloomfields. It finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Taylor Clark’s 28th-minute penalty for the Marketmen being cancelled out by Jacob Lay immediately after the break. On 63 minutes, Needham Market were reduced to ten-men after a red card for Dan Morphew. But once again, goalkeeper Marcus Garnham proved to be the Marketmen’s hero in a penalty shoot-out.

Nuneaton Borough also won a competition by claiming the Ron Bradbury Trophy against Midland League Division One neighbours Atherstone Town. Shaquille Master gave Boro a 37th-minute lead that was cancelled out in first-half injury-time. Kane Richards restored the home side’s lead 5 minutes into the second half and an unnamed triallist added a third in stoppage time to make it 3-1.

There was more disappointment for expectant AFC Rushden & Diamonds supporters as their side went down to a 4-1 defeat at Moulton College to United Counties League Premier Division North side Loughborough Students. An 81st-minute penalty consolation from Connor Furlong was all the home side could muster in response.

Stratford Town were beaten 2-1 at the Arden Garages Stadium by a strong squad from League One Cheltenham Town. The Bards led through a Will Dawes effort, but goals either side of the break from Dylan Barkers and Dan Nlundulu saw the Robins home.

Royston Town enjoyed a good 4-0 win at the Utilita Stadium against Division One Central hosts Welwyn Garden City. Matt Bateman with a brace, Danny Newton and a triallist were the Crows on target.

Hednesford Town edged an entertaining best-of-seven-goal encounter against a squad from Premier League Aston Villa at Keys Park.Sprinkled with some first-teamers, it was one of them, winger Anwar El Ghazi, who gave Villa a 13th-minute lead. Another, youngster Carney Chukwuemeka, doubled the visitors` lad from the penalty spot 6 minutes later and then Frankie Ealing made it 3-0 on 36 minutes. James McQuilkin reduced the deficit in the 70th minute and then Chay Tilt netted the Pitmen’s second just 2 minutes later. Joe Cuff equalised with a free-kick on 83 minutes and the crowd of 824 saw Cuff completed a great comeback by the hosts with a winning goal with 2 minutes remaining.

Stourbridge took on newly promoted Northern Premier League Division One Midlands outfit Boldmere St Michaels at their Trevor Brown Memorial Ground and were 3-1 winners, thanks to goals from Reece Styche, Joe Hull and an unnamed triallist.

Barwell took on Premier League Leicester City’s under-23s at the UK Direct Flooring Stadium. And an entertaining game finished all-square at 1-1 in front of a crowd of 402, with an unnamed triallist grabbing the Canaries` goal.

Ambitious Northern Premier Division One Midlands new boys Harborough Town beat Tamworth 2-1 at Northampton Road.Eoin McKeown equalised for Any Peaks` side after 83 minutes, but the Lambs were beaten by a 90th minute Rhys Kelly effort after Paul Malone had given the hosts a first half lead.

Kings Langley were comfortable 4-0 winners at Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division hosts London Colney. Alie Bangura with a brace, Noyan Tajbakhsh and a triallist were the Kings` scorers.

Newly promoted Bedford Town held last season’s play-off winners and now Vanarama National League North side Peterborough Sports to a 1-1 draw at The Eyrie. A 27th minute Danny Setchell goal for the Eagles was cancelled out 7 minutes from time by an unnamed Turbines scorer.

Midland League Premier Division side Tividale hosted Bromsgrove Sporting, who edged a 2-1 win. The experienced George Forsyth and then teenager Blake Kindred scored the Rouslers goals.

Rushall Olympic went down to a 3-1 defeat at Tividale’s league rivals Shifnal Town. The hosts were ahead within the opening 2 minutes through Joe Thompson. One of several triallists pulled the Pics level but Max Chinmenes and Harvey Lewis sealed the hosts` victory.

Newcomers Mickleover ran in eight goals without reply at United Counties League Division One Clipstone, while Basford United, who were switched from the Northern Premier League with Mickleover, shared a 2-2 draw with Midland League neighbours Long Eaton United. Anthony Dwyer and Brad McGowan were the Basford scorers.

Coalville Town beat Northern Premier League Division One Midlands new boys Hinckley LR 3-1.Tendai Chitiza, Luke Shaw and a triallist the Ravens` scorers.

Wednesday's Pre-Season Friendly Round-Up
A look at a handful of games involving clubs from the Pitching In Southern Football League on Wednesday night.

Premier Division South club Gosport Borough enjoyed a 6-0 Privett Park victory over Division One South neighbours Lymington Town. Billie Busari, Dan Wooden, Abduali Bell-Baggie and unnamed triallists were the Boro scorers.

It was a miserable evening for Gosport’s league rivals Salisbury as they went down to a 6-2 defeat at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium to ambitious Wessex League Premier Division side AFC Portchester. Manager Steve Claridge opted to use several triallists amongst a handful of senior players and paid the price against a side who are really `going for it` in 2022/23 in terms of the quality of their summer signings. Dave Wakefield and Sam Ashton scored for the Whites after the visitors had been 4-0 up with a brace from former Portsmouth and AFC Bournemouth favourite Brett Pittman, two for another well-known striker in the area, Felipe Barcelos and singles from Ashton Leigh and Liam Robinson.

Another Premier Division South outfit, Merthyr Town, won 3-0 at Ardal Southern Division side Treharris Athletic. It took a while for the Martyrs to get going, but they finally broke the deadlock after 64 minutes through Camden Duncan.Ten minutes later, a triallist right back headed Merthyr 2-0 up and then 2 minutes from time, a fine Curtis Huston strike made it 3-0.

Premier Division Central club Leiston welcomed League One neighbours Ipswich Town’s impressive under-23 side to Victory Road. And the young Tractor Boys ran out 4-1 winners, with Will Davies grabbing a second half consolation for the hosts.

Leiston’s new league rivals, Ilkeston Town, won 4-2 at United Counties League Premier Division North neighbours Heanor Town. A Remaye Campbell penalty on 23 minutes made it 1-1 after the hosts had taken a 15th minute lead. Montel Gibson took Ilkeston into the lead after 38 minutes. An Alex Troke penalty made it 3-1 on 56 minutes and 3 minutes later, a triallist added the Robins` fourth.

Division One South club Paulton Rovers won their latest outing 4-0 at Toolstation Western League Premier Division side Ashton & Backwell United. An early Kyle Tooze opener for Rovers was followed by a second on 27 minutes with an own goal, swiftly followed 4 minutes later by one from Ed Butcher. A Martin Lenihan chip from just inside his own half added Rovers` fourth goal on the hour-mark.

MICKLEOVER 2-5 LONG EATON UNITED  BY BRADLEY WHITE

Long Eaton United came back from 2-1 down to pick-up another pre-season victory on Saturday afternoon at the Don Amott Arena. Jamie Walker's first-half brace gave Long Eaton United something to play for after Mickleover scored two quick fire goals before half-time. The Blues made the most of their chances after the break, as Trialist A, Kam Campbell and Trialist B found the back of the net in a clinical second-half performance.

Ian Deakin slightly rotated the squad after Tuesday's draw against Basford United. Brad Wilson and Sam Parker returned to the starting line-up at full-back while Rod Orlando-Young came in for Kam Campbell out wide.

In an end-to-end first half, Long Eaton United relentlessly pressed the Mickleover defence, forcing errors at the back. The home side's goalkeeper was immediately called in to action and forced to make a double save with Jamie Walker and Alex Marshall finding space inside the opposition box to shoot. Orlando-Young hit the rebound and rattled the underside of the crossbar with a powerful long-range effort that somehow stayed out. Sam Parker and Jamie Walker were causing nightmares for Mickleover defenders with their overlapping runs down the left wing. This eventually led to the opening goal when a misplaced pass at the back was intercepted by Orlando-Young and the winger was fouled in the area. Jamie Walker tucked the penalty kick away with ease and The Blues were in front after 28 minutes played. Long Eaton United were punished for a lapse in concentration in the run up to half-time. Mickleover levelled the match and took the lead with two goals in rapid succession. Although, Jamie Walker soon found an equaliser in added time. The winger brought down a forward pass, beat the last man and slotted the ball past the 'keeper to restore parity with the last kick of the half.

Ian Deakin made seven changes at the break and just five minutes after the restart the substitutes were making an impact. Trialist A found the top corner with a great strike from the edge of the box. In the 64th minute Trialist A turned provider with a square ball that made it impossible for Kam Campbell to miss, a great move from The Blues to double the advantage. Half-time substitutes Tyreece Robinson and Marley Fearon picked up where Keiran Walker and Romaine Graham left off. The young centre-back duo denied Mickleover on the counterattack and prevented The Sports from scoring in the second-half. With two minutes of regular time left to play, Trialist B got in on the act. The winger cut in from the left and found the bottom right corner of the goal with a composed finish to make it five.

Thursday's Pre-Season Friendly Round-UpGames involving clubs from the Pitching In Southern Football League.

Premier Division Central club Rushall Olympic sealed a comfortable 3-0 win at Midland League Division One side Bilston Town. First-half goals from Sam Moore and Will Shorrock was added to by a Sam Whittall effort in the second period for Liam McDonald’s side.

A crowd of 525 were at Keys Park for the derby between the Pics` league rivals Hednesford Town and Northern Premier League Premier Division side Stafford Rangers. And it saw the Pitmen run out 4-2 winners. Cameron Ebbutt opened the scoring for the hosts on 28 minutes and an unnamed triallist headed home the Pitmen’s second 7 minutes later. Just 3 minutes after that, Joe Willis lobbed Lewis Gwilliams to reduce the deficit for Rangers. But right on half-time, Leroy Lita won and converted a penalty made it 3-1 at the break. A Rangers` triallist pulled a second back on 71 minutes but 4 minutes later, Joe Morley struck from 20 yards to make it 4-2.

Amazingly, the second leg of the Brookes-Clark Shield encounter between another Premier Division Central club, Stourbridge, and holders NPL Division One Midlands side Halesowen Town had to be abandoned on police advice due to crowd disturbances! The first leg ended 2-2 and the Glassboys were leading 2-0 at the time of the abandonment with goals from Callum Gittings after 9 minutes and Greg Mills in the 26th.

Stourbridge’s league rivals Tamworth enjoyed a 6-0 home romp against United Counties League Premier Division South side Cogenhoe United. The Lambs only led 1-0 at the break through and Eoin McKeown effort, but second half goals from Callum Griffin, Ty Deacon, Jordan Clement, George Cater and Lucas Yeomans secured a comfortable victory for Andy Peaks against his former assistant’s new team.

There was a bit of a wake-up call for another Premier Division Central club in Thursday action as Kings Langley were beaten 5-1 at Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division side Tring Athletic!

Another Premier Division Central outfit beaten by lower league opposition was St Ives Town, who lost 3-0 at NPL Division One Midlands newcomers Harborough Town in the first leg of the Carl Westbury Memorial Trophy. All of ambitious Harborough’s goals came in the first half from Dodzi Agbenu with two and skipper Ben Williams.
