Ilkeston v Boston Utd : Tue 26 Jul: ko 7 45 : Preseason friendly

.

This should be our toughest pre-season friendly so far as we take on National League North opponents Boston United.
Boston finished in the playoffs last season.
Hopefully there won't be so much chopping and changing during this game so it should be more competitive and give us a better idea of how we are likely to do in the league.
Just one more pre-season game after this one - Belper Town at home next Saturday.

MATCH PREVIEW:  Boston United (H)

The waiting is nearly over. Now it’s getting serious and the Robins welcome National League North side and last season’s play-off finalists Boston United to the Microlise New Manor Ground on Tuesday night (July 26)
Ilkeston’s pre-season continues with Martin Carruthers’ side hosting Paul Cox’s Pilgrims with a 7.45pm kick-off.
Despite United’s previous Football League status and numerous Emirates FA Cup records, the Robins have played the Lincolnshire side on multiple occasions. Ilkeston’s most notable win was a 2-1 victory in front of a packed-out NMG to progress into the second round of the FA Cup in 1997.
Robins boss Martin Carruthers will be no stranger to the visiting side’s supporters having made a handful of appearances during their time in the EFL League Two.

The Robins have had a fine pre-season so far with Carruthers keen to hit the ground running in the new season’s opening game away at Tamworth. He said: “Tomorrow will be a great test for us, the sort of test we’re wanting ahead of the new season so thank you to Paul Cox and John Ramshaw for agreeing to come over and play us.“They (Boston) are a great side, only just missing out in the National League North play-off final and I’m sure they’ll be up there again next season.

“We only have two games left between now and the start of the season. There are places still up for grabs and the players know that the next two games and the remaining training sessions are pivotal in our own preparation and plans for what we hope to be another successful season. “I’m really looking forward to the game and to see how far away we are from a top side in the league above.” Boston will be sure to bring a great following with them from Lincolnshire, so we hope to see plenty of Robins fans at the game as well to help ensure it’s a great atmosphere.

It's nearly kickoff time and it looks a very poor attendance.  Everyone must be watching the England womens match on TV.

Team change  Ollie Brown-Hill wears No 3

The teams are out. Ilkest attacking car park end

Ward is showing some good touches. Fenton free kick hits a Boston defender. O'Grady  gets a shot in but its easily saved. Brown-Hill sends O'Grady away but it ends in corner.  Another shot by O'Grady is saved. Thats 3 shots by O'Grady in quick succession.        0-0      14 mins

Both teams are making chances now.  Ilkeston team changes now happening on 70 minutes. Montel finds the net again but he's given offside. Surely not offside. He took it brilliantly. Now superb save by keeper from Ward who is back on the pitch. It's a cracking game.  Boston shot slams against the bar       2-2          75 mins

What a shot by Wakefield ! it slams against the goal frame .

It's finished  Ilkeston Town 3 Boston United 2

Terrific performance from Ilkeston and a really good game to watch.
Boston put out their first team in the second half and for a period ilkeston were pinned back. But back Ilkeston came and Gibson's goals won us the game.

That was far and away Ilkeston's best performance.

Match Report by WhiteBallProject

MONTEL MAGIC SEALS FINE ROBINS COMEBACK

Ilkeston Town 3
Gibson 56’ 64’ 79’

Boston United 2
Obiero 59’Gordon 61’

Attendance 286

Ilkeston Town came from behind to defeat National League North Boston United 3-2 thanks to an impressive second half Montel Gibson hat-trick. Gibson had given Ilkeston the lead only for Boston to hit back with two goals in a pulsating second half before before Gibson stole the show with his second hat-trick of the pre season campaign.

The Robins started the game strongly with Chris O’Grady at the centre of Ilkeston’s attacking threat having two efforts thwarted by the Boston custodian. Dan Bradley also had a guilt edged chance from a Jared Bird corner but his deft header sent the ball just wide.Ilkeston continued to dominate the early stages with the visitor’s first effort on goal not arriving until the 29th minute when Ben Pollock shot well wide. As the half wore on Boston started to get into the game and starting to put some passing together despite not really troubling Tomasz Bukowski in the Robins goal. The game started to resemble a less than exciting typical pre season friendly with very few goalmouth incidents.

However after the break Boston bought on some of their big guns and dominated the opening exchanges of the second half forcing Ilkeston onto the back foot. The Robins were finding it difficult to get out of their own half until a piece of Gibson magic completely changed the game. On 56 minutes the in form striker picked the ball up 35 yards from goal and struck the ball extravagantly over the despairing dive of the Boston keeper to give Ilkeston the lead against the run of play. Boston replied just three minutes later when Micah Obiero won the ball in the area and tenaciously held off the attentions of several Ilkeston defenders to place the ball the ball in the bottom left hand corner of Bukowski’s net. Now the Pilgrims had a taste for attacking and Jannai Gordon got their second within a minute when he latched on to a through ball and calmly lobbed Bukowski. Ilkeston looked like they might be looking at a heavy defeat as Boston gained in confidence but on 64 minutes Gibson scored an equaliser with an header at the far post after getting on the end of an excellent O’Grady cross. The goal seemed to inspire Ilkeston who started to put the visitors under intense pressure. Gibson appeared to have got his hat trick when he was put clear and he coolly beat the Boston keeper but the linesman declared his effort was off side. The visitors custodian then had to make a fine double save from efforts by Ollie Brown-Hill and Jamie Ward before he was beaten by that man Gibson on 79 minutes after a fine piece of inter passing with Zak Goodson. Charlie Wakefield nearly added to the Robins tally when he hit a thunderous shot against the post. In the excitement Boston also came close to equalising and hit the Ilkeston bar with Bukowski well beaten. However at the final whistle Montel Gibson hat trick heroics were the difference between the two teams and Ilkeston reflected on an impressive 3-2 win against strong opposition.

There were many positives for manager Martin Caruthers to ponder on, particularly in a pulsating second half display and as well as the obvious Man of the Match performance from Gibson,  O’Grady had his best performance since joining the club and Kieran Fenton was peerless at the back.

The Robins will head towards their final pre season game against Belper Town at the Microlise NMG on Saturday feeling much more confident that they are starting to look like a team that can make an impression at step three next season.

Re: Ilkeston v Boston Utd : Tue 26 Jul: ko 7 45 : Preseason friendly

The 286 that turned up for this match were richly rewarded with a cracking contest and what must be one of the best goals seen at the NMG. What a pity Montel’s stunner wasn’t in a league match as it would surely have been a contender for goal of the season.

Until now, Ilkeston had been far from convincing in their pre-season friendlies but this match gave an indication of what they can do. No one had a bad game and several players had their best game so far. Chris O'Grady had a fine match and Wakefield and Bird are now starting to show last seasons form. Montel was on fire and should have had four goals with one chalked off incorrectly in my opinion. Ward showed why he scores so many goals with some cracking efforts.

One of the most pleasing things was the way we came back after being under the cosh at the start of the second half.

Apparently trialist Tom Hilton has now been signed by the club after several impressive performances.

MARK DUFFY'S MATCH REPORT

Robins prove too strong for Boston United

Ilkeston Town 3   (Gibson 56, 64, 78)
Boston United 2   (Obiero 59, Gordon 61  )
By Mark Duffy

Montel Gibson struck another hat-trick as we recorded an impressive win over National League North side Boston United on Tuesday night. In a game of two contrasting halves, all the goals came in the second and four of them in the space of eight minutes as both sides enjoyed an energetic run-out in the closing stages of their pre-season campaigns.

And it was the Robins who prevailed thanks to Gibson’s superb finishing on the night. We began well and Gibson saw a shot saved by Boston’s goalkeeper, known only as ‘Trialist A’, in the opening few seconds, the next chance coming on ten minutes when Chris O’Grady also shot straight at the United stopper who then got down low to deny the same player seconds later.

We lost Jamie Ward injured midway through the first-half, Zak Goodson replacing him, Boston’s ‘Trialist B’ with the next opening as he cut inside and fired a shot straight at Tomasz Bukowski in the Ilkeston goal. Shaun Pollock then shot wide from distance for the Pilgrims but the half drew to a close with the game goalless.

The second-half began fairly slowly but was brought to life by a stunning goal on 56 minutes. Gibson found some space 30 yards out and without much hesitation let fly with a superbly hit effort that found the top corner of the net.

But Boston were level four minutes later when Micah Obiero received the ball in the penalty area and was able to fire low into the corner past Bukowski. Within a further two minutes the visitors then led, as a ball over the top found Jaanai Gordon and he lobbed Bukowski in style to complete a quick turnaround. But we then levelled with the fourth goal in eight minutes, as O’Grady’s deep cross found Gibson at the back post and he beat the goalkeeper with a header.

The game was far more watchable now and Ward, fit enough to return to the fray after his early injury, forced a save low down on 73 minutes just after his reappearance. United nearly regained the lead when Jordon Crawford cut inside and thundered an effort off the underside of the crossbar before heading the rebound straight at Bukowski. And it was us who would then score next, with the in-form Gibson running on to a knock down and finishing well to complete his second hat-trick of pre-season.

We kept coming and Ward drilled an effort just past the post from distance on 81, Charlie Wakefield even closer moments later with a 25-yarder which struck the crossbar. Remaye Campbell also went close late on but saw his shot saved, the game ending moments later to give us a morale-boosting win.

Ilkeston: Bukowski (Trialist B), J Thomas (Hilton 71), Brown-Hill, Bradley, K Thomas (Troke 71), Fenton, Ward (Goodson 26), Bird (Ward 71), O’Grady (Campbell 71), Gibson, Wakefield
Boston: Trialist A, Brown (Trialist D 46), Platt, Mbeka, S Pollock (Gordon 46), Ferguson, B Pollock, Solanke, Obiero, Trialist B (Crawford 46), Trialist C (Shiels 46).
