Ilkeston v Leiston : Sat 13th Aug 22 : ko 3pm

Following our 1-1 draw at Tamworth, it’s our first home game this Saturday with Leiston the visitors.

It’s a first ever meeting between the two sides.

Leiston won their opening game beating Nuneaton Borough 3-2

Re: Ilkeston v Leiston : Sat 13th Aug 22 : ko 3pm

.

Leiston are one of seven teams who started the 2022-23 season with a win. They are the team with the most travelling in our league. Our trip to Leiston in December is our longest but for Leiston their trip to Ilkeston is just one of many long distance journeys.

Leiston finished just outside the playoffs last season so are one of the better teams in Southern League Premier Central.

Let us give their few travelling supporters a very warm welcome after their long journey.  They won’t be getting home until late Saturday night.

Re: Ilkeston v Leiston : Sat 13th Aug 22 : ko 3pm

They  have a 180 mile journey from Suffolk and it will take 3 hours and 15 mins if they use the A14. It will take 4 hours if they take the fen route through Peterborough or through Kings Lynn.
Leiston is one of the smallest towns in our league i.e. population of only 5000 but it does have one of the biggest nuclear power stations in Europe (Sizewell A,B and C) on its door step and this is its major employer in the town.

Game 2/42.
The Blues head to Derbyshire this coming weekend for their first league away fixture of the season to date. The Blues battled hard on the opening day of the season against a strong Nuneaton side to claim all three points. Three of the goals came very late on, with four goals in the 3-2 win coming from the penalty spot. Ilkeston came away with a good 1-1 draw and took a point at Tamworth in their opening day fixture.

Defender Jake Hutchings will make his 100th appearance for Leiston at the weekend should he play.

Ilkeston Town formed in 2017 after the previous club Ilkeston folded just months earlier. Ilkeston were put into the Midland Football League (equivalent of the Eastern Counties League) and put in Division One for the beginning of the 2017-2018 season.
They finished second in their first season and were promoted to the Premier Division.
They won the league the next season on the last day after beating Loughborough University 8-1 and this time beat Walsall Wood, who had beat them to the title the season before, on goal difference. They won the Northern Premier Division One North title last season and consequently were promoted to Step 3 football and the same level as the Blues.

Blues joint boss Chris Wigger said on Thursday evening: - “With game number two fast approaching, we can definitely now reflect on Saturday’s opening day win against Nuneaton. I think it’s definitely safe to say that Nuneaton are a very good side and that is a great three points. Starting the season with a win is fantastic and certainly let’s a little steam escape the pressure valve. The team were very disciplined on Saturday and I feel a year ago we wouldn’t have won that game, but we have improved and that is obviously pleasing.

This week we travel to Ilkeston who I believe are very much one of the fancied sides this season so we are under no illusions of the task at hand. With Iuri Fernandes back available this weekend and JEC getting all important minutes with the Reserves, we are nearly at full strength which is fantastic going into such a tough game.”

Leiston Reserves are in home action for the first time this season when Huntingdon Town visit Suffolk. Huntingdon drew 3-3 at home to Debenham LC last week. The Reserves are also at home on Tuesday night when Needham Market U23’s visit in a 7.45pm kick off. Blues Reserves boss Ryan Honeyman commented in midweek: - “This Saturday we welcome Huntingdon Town to Victory Road, for our first home league game this season. Both games last season were tough encounters so I am anticipating a really hard game again this weekend. After what has seemed an extremely long time since our last competitive game and after the pre season friendly’s it was great to finally get back into league action last weekend away at Swaffham Town, where we took what look’s to be a good point, after Swaffham’s excellent victory midweek away at Norwich CBS, who are seen by many to be right in the mix come the end of the season. Saturday saw five players make their league debuts for us, so it was really pleasing to see the boys put in a hardworking, committed performance in hot conditions special mention to Harry Podd who played despite suffering with a throat infection. The only downside of the day was Ash wilding suffering an ankle fracture which sees him ruled out for the foreseeable future. Myself and everyone at the club wishes Ash a speedy recovery. Will be great to see you all back on Saturday.”

Games in the Pitching In Southern League Central Premier this weekend: -
Basford United v AFC Rushden & Diamonds
Bedford Town v Barwell
Coalville Town v Alvechurch
Hitchin Town v Rushall Olympic
ILKESTON TOWN v LEISTON
Mickleover v Hednesford Town
Needham Market v Bromsgrove Sporting
Nuneaton Borough v Royston Town
Redditch United v Kings Langley
St Ives Town v Stratford Town
Stourbridge v Tamworth.

Re: Ilkeston v Leiston : Sat 13th Aug 22 : ko 3pm

.

Three points against Leiston and Barwell would give us 7 points which could see us top of the pile next Monday night 15th Aug.
Only Redditch could have more than 7 points making them surprise league leaders, They have 3 points now and play Kings Langley at home Saturday and Stratford at home Monday.
The teams that didn’t play Monday have a chance to pick up points on Tuesday night.
Then on Saturday 20th August Ilkeston and Redditch meet at the NMG.
We travel to Rushden and Diamonds on Sat 27th August before completing our opening month's fixtures on Bank Holiday Monday at home to Mickleover,

The Leiston game is an important one as we should be something like full strength against one of the better teams in this league.

If you're going to the match expect two water breaks in each half.

Big chance for Davies but Deeney is equal to his low drive.   Leiston are looking a good side (better than Tamworth). ilkeston are under a bit of pressure just now.       0-0      18 mins

Great chance for Leiston as the ball flies across Ilkeston's goal from Quantrell's cross.  No 3 Dunbar is causing problems on the counter attack.  brill save by Deeney from Quantrell..  Leiston should be ahead.

Goal Ilkeston  -  cracker from Gibson appeared to hit the crossbar and post but the lino has indicated  that the ball was over the line.   Massive protests from Leiston but the goal stands.

Jack Thomas cross is just too high for Gibson. This match is finely balanced. Next goal will probably win it.
