Sat 20 Aug 22 - IlkestonTown v Redditch United - ko 3pm

.
Saturday we welcome Redditch United to the Microlise NMG. After no wins in our first three matches, we really need a change of fortune. Redditch won their first match away at Hednesford by 1-0.  They then lost 2-3 at home to Kings Langley and on Monday night they drew 2-2 with Stratford. Last season they finished 15th with 45 points from 40 matches

Martin Carruthers needs to decide what his best team is and give them a few games.

Not easy because I'm not sure what our best team is

I'm not sure what the injury situation is but I would definitely have Dan Bradley in the team.
I know he's picked up injuries but that's because he gets stuck in.

MATCH PREVIEW | Redditch United (H)    Aug 19, 2022

We play our second home league game of the season on Saturday as we welcome Redditch United to the Microlise New Manor Ground, kick-off 3pm.

Coming off the back of a disappointing result at Barwell, manager Martin Carruthers said “We know there are fine lines in football and the midweek game at Barwell was to prove costly. “We rotated the pack to protect some injured players and to give some players some minutes and debuts. “At this level, we have been punished for our mistakes and lost valuable points because of the players’ quality, speed and quick thinking at this step. “It won’t be easy tomorrow but we hope to give our fantastic supporters a win and our first at this step.”

Match Details:
Saturday, August 20
Microlise New Manor Ground, DE7 8JF

MATCH PREVIEW | ILKESTON TOWN VS REDDITCH UNITED
BY TIA DUCKWORTH

A trip away to newly promoted Ilkeston Town is up next. For the fourth game of the season, the Reds travel away to the Robins as a Saturday 3pm kick off awaits at The Microlise New Manor Ground.
Both sides will be hopeful of seeing improvements as Ilkeston will be looking to pick up their first win of the season having drawn two and lost one. Redditch on the other hand won their opening game of the season but have since lost one and drew one. Defensive errors which last season were very few and far between, have cropped up in the loss to Kings Langley and the draw against Stratford Town.

Ilkeston Town were promoted as champions last season after topping the Nothern Premier League - Midlands division, pipping Stamford, Halesowen Town and Chasetown to the title. Their home record was impressive having won 14 of their 19, drawing 2 and losing the other 3, cheered on by an impressive average crowd of 998. Despite their promotion, the expectation of most is far from ‘just stay in the league’, it’s to be competitive.

Their first home game in the Southern League Central saw them host Leiston with plenty of late drama. Montel Gibson, the former Stourbridge man, opened the scoring in the first half with Leiston equalising in the 65th minute. Zak Goodson scored in the 89th minute for the Robins as they looked set to take their first 3 points, but a 94th minute equaliser from Quantrell denied them and pulled them back once again.

Redditch United and Matt Clarke will know all about Montel Gibson who scored in the nightmare game on the first day of 2022 and will need to put their defensive errors behind them against a side who will have the quality to punish.

Unlike Redditch, Ilkeston have so far failed to keep a clean sheet conceding one to Tamworth and two apiece against Leiston and Barwell but have replied with at least one of their own in each of those.

It could be a game of goals judging by the way both of their seasons have started so far.

For anyone making the 70-mile trip north please note that it is a cash-only turnstile, £12 adults, £8 concessions/students and those under 16 are free. It’s forecasted more lovely summer sunshine, see you there and let’s hope for a good one!

Ten minutes to kickoff and it's bright sunshine here at the NMG and there's a stiff breeze.
The teams are out. Ilkeston are wearing their home kit. Redditch are wearing sky blue shirts and shorts
Ilkeston start the game attacking the car park end.

We're off .....

If we thought that we could waltz through this league, it's increasingly looking like we aren't going to do that.
It's still early days but four matches played and just three points suggests that it's going to be difficult to make any sort of a promotion challenge.
The Redditch officials told me that the league is quite competitive and any team can beat any team. It's beginning to look that way. I imagined Redditch to be a mid table team but they had several good quality players and they created many more chances than us in the first half. We did better in the second half and maybe we might have won if O'Hanlon hadn't been sent off.
Heard Jamie Ward talking after the game and he said morale among the players is still good because of the quality we have.
We try again next week at Rushden who have just one point from four matches,

"90+2' Eratt-Thompson is booked for kicking the ball away after a foul."

I for one was taken by surprise when Errat-Thompson lashed the ball into our supporters in
frustration after a free kick was given against him. In fairness he immediately raised his hand in apology.

Maybe not the best way to make yourself popular with supporters but he entered the field psyched up and wanted to try and win the game for us. He wanted to be a last minute hero and that's exactly what we want to see.

Welcome to Ilkeston Declan. For me, definitely forgiven.

Re: Sat 20 Aug 22 - IlkestonTown v Redditch United - ko 3pm

Sat 20th Aug 2022
Southern League Premier Central
Ilkeston Town  1  Redditch United  1
Ilkeston’s search for an opening win continues after they were held by Redditch United. Jamie Ward opened his account with a spectacular equaliser after Robbie Bunn had put the visitors ahead.
Redditch made the better start and nearly went ahead on 7 minutes when Ryan Nesbitt’s effort rattled the Ilkeston crossbar. Five minutes later Max Sheaf forced Saul Deeney to produce a fine save. Ward then saw Kieran Boucher off his line but couldn’t direct his shot into the goal. Redditch were unlucky not to score when Lewis Hudson’s shot was pushed out by Deeney but only into the path of Nesbitt who bundled the rebound against the post. Redditch deservedly went ahead after 25 minutes when Bunn drilled home but on 31 minutes Ward produced a moment of magic when he found the top corner from 25 yards. Sheaf nearly restored Redditch’s lead with an effort similar to Ward’s but Deeney turned it over the bar.
The second half saw Ilkeston start to get on top and a Liam Daly header from a corner tested Boucher. Zak Goodson’s first time effort was only just wide but Ilkeston’s push for a winner was stalled when Ben O’Hanlon received a red card for a late challenge. Despite being a player short it was Ilkeston who looked for a winner. Kieran Donnelly had a chance for Redditch on the counter but he fired over and for the Robins, Remaye Campbell’s close range effort was blocked by a defender. In the final moments Deeney preserved a point for Ilkeston with a brave save at the feet of Dunn.

Redditch's Match Report

MATCH REPORT | ILKESTON TOWN 1-1 REDDITCH UNITED
BY TIA DUCKWORTH

Redditch United travelled away to Ilkeston on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The hosts were looking for their first  win of the season whilst Redditch were hoping to improve on recent results and get back to winning ways. The visitors got off to the quickest start and just 7 minutes in the woodwork was tested. Some good play between Hudson and Flanagan saw the latter get by his man with some quick feet and released Nesbitt down the left who broke through the defence, his left-footed effort rattled the crossbar and bounced away. Redditch continued a couple of minutes later Sheaf saw his free kick land on top of the net.

The Robin’s then got their first shot on goal in the 12th minute as Ward’s effort was comfortably held by Boucher. The Reds continued to cause the hosts all sorts of issues with their attacking play and Reece Flanagan was the next one to see his half volley skip just wide of the left post. In the 22nd minute more waves of Redditch pressure ensued, Sheaf broke down the right hand side and played a great switch across the pitch to find an onrushing Hudson, his cross found the backpost and Nesbitt’s effort hit the bottom of the right post, it fell to Sheaf and his low effort somehow travelled across the goal and wide of the far post.

The much-deserved breakthrough finally came in the 24th minute as Nesbitt held the ball up in the box, flicked it up high and it fell to Bunn who stroked the volley home into the bottom left corner. Despite the good start, Ilkeston got themselves straight back into the game on the half hour with a stunning strike. Ward found himself with a bit of time and space about 25 yards out, his right-footed effort curled beautifully into the top right corner to level it up, one of those you have to stand back and admire.

Irrespective of the equaliser, Redditch continued in the same vein and in the 36th minute a save from Deeney was required. Flanagan again did well, this time nutmegging the Robin’s defender with a reverse ball to Sheaf, he dribbled the ball into a bit of space and his curling effort needed a Deeney hand to tip it over the bar. Ilkeston’s Ward caused more issues for the Reds defence though and in the 40th minute almost got his brace but his effort curled just high and wide.

The final chance of the half fell the way of Redditch as Mensah drove forwards with the ball on the break and set away Nesbitt down the right, as he unleashed the trigger O’Hanlon recovered well to block the shot. The half time whistle brought about the end of a good half of entertaining football, but the Reds will feel they should have had the lead.

The second half got underway but the entertaining football of the first 45 minutes didn’t, it took a while for anything of note to occur in the second period. The Robins were much improved, likely a result of the team talk you’d presume, and the Reds weren’t near their first half performance. In the 63rd minute, the home side went very close to taking the lead, the ball was held up well on the edge of the box and laid off for Goodson whose bouncing shot was just wide of the right post. In the 71st minute a straight red card was shown to O’Hanlon for a very late, high-footed challenge on Sheaf - not a single complaint from the players or the home bench so clearly the right decision. A few substitutions later, Redditch managed to have their first real effort of the half as Sheaf and Donnelly linked well together, a neat flick beyond the Ilkeston defender from Sheaf set away Donnelly down the right who drove into the box but his shot flew over the bar. One final opportunity to take 3 points fell the way of the Reds in additional time as Donnelly, again, held off his marker to the byline and got beyond him to then deliver a low ball into the six yard box, but it was eventually cleared away and the referee blew his whistle to end the game.

A big thank you to our travelling support who cheered the lads on throughout. We hope you all had a safe journey home and to see you for the bank holiday weekend games!

An entertaining game with Redditch coming away disappointed that they didn’t take all three points back to Worcestershire following the impressive first half display and facing 10 men at the end of the game.

Up next for the Reds is a tough test at home on Saturday 27th August when they host Nuneaton Borough, and then on the bank holiday Monday they travel away to Stourbridge. Tickets can be purchased in advance for the home game against Nuneaton by clicking here

Re: Sat 20 Aug 22 - IlkestonTown v Redditch United - ko 3pm

I dont like taking about refs but it seems like after every match its the main talking points. We just started penning redditch back into there half. Yes it was a foul but not a red card. Then the yellow card for Jamie ward because the ref couldn't count to 10. I think he got to 8.

Lets talk about the match. Our back 4 is shocking. We cant defend for love nor money. Nobody wants to take responsibility, we must have had 2 maybe 3 chances to get rid of the ball. The ball went in and everybody had there arms out trying to blame each other. Time to go back to old school defending, if you have a chance to get rid get rid. Yes it doesn't look great but it gives you a chance to reset and get back into position.
Must say Jamie ward goal was a cracker but the problem we have we have to score a worldy to get a point.
Redditch where not a good side and to say they are disappointed with a draw, well they must have been watching a different game to me.
Two things from Saturday i didnt like was i dont know how RC didnt start and at the end of the game booing from the stand. I hope it wasn't at our players and aimed at the ref.
Overall i think we played well and did enough to get 3 points.
