Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

.
.
We have no match this Saturday so our next game should be Tuesday 4th October when we are scheduled to entertain St Ives Town in a re-arranged fixture at the NMG.. However on Sat 1st October, St Ives are at home to Chasetown in the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round. If that game ends in a draw and goes to a replay then our match will be off.

The re-arranged match against  St Ives Town on Tuesday 4th October will now go head as planned because St Ives will not be involved in a replay. They did well to see off Chasetown 3-1 to advance further in the FA Cup
Their 3-1 win will give them plenty of confidence when they come to the NMG but Ilkeston will also come into the game with confidence having picked up seven points from their last three league matches.

There are just two matches in our league on Tuesday night (4th October)

Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town    and
Nuneaton Borough v Bedford Town

An Ilkeston win by any score would see us rise from 15th to 8th in the table

Re: Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

.

St Ives are currently in 10th place on 13 points but have picked up only 4 points on the road.
They got their season off to a great start with 4 wins from their opening 6 matches but siince then they have only picked up one point.
However, they are through to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup after beating Barking 4-0, Canvey Island 3-0 and most recently Chasetown 3-1.
Their best result in the league was a 5-0 home win against Stratford.
They are the 4th highest scorers in the Premier Central with 19 goals
Top goalscorer is Jonathan Edwards with 7 goals.

So it looks like another close encounter with both teams believing that they can win.
Jamie Ward will be keen to build on last Tuesday’s excellent performance and win against Stratford which was especially pleasing because we came from behind. And a second consecutive home win would extend our unbeaten run to four matches.
We can do this.

Re: Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

.

The Jamie Ward and Ben Turner era is underway and under their stewardship we are so far unbeaten in normal playing time.

Coalville                 away   won  4-1
Anstey (FA Cup)    away   draw 1-1
Anstey (FA Cup)    home  draw  3-3
Bedford                  away  draw  2-2
Stratford                 home   won  2-1

Recent signings;  Declan Eratt-Thompson, Joe Wilson, Tom Solanke and Dempsey Arlott-John have made a big difference to the way we play. We’ve also seen the emergence of Chris O’Grady and Marshall Willock.
Jamie Ward is now fit again so may pick himself to play against St Ives.
We are yet to see who takes up the goal scoring mantle following the departure of Montel but the way we played against Coalville and Stratford, the goals will come. It could be Ward, Campbell, O’Grady or Arlott-John.
A win against St Ives will push us up the table and signal that we’re now showing the form that was expected of us.

Re: Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

.

It’s matchday and we have an opportunity to show the other teams that our acclimatisation period in this league is over and we’re now ready to be genuine promotion contenders. It’s taken a few weeks and a few changes on and off the field to get where we are but at last it feels like we have a team capable of achieving our ambitions.

In our opening games we weren’t playing badly but we weren’t getting wins which affected confidence. After a humiliating defeat against Mickleover, the wins at Matlock and Coalville restored belief and we finally got a home win against Stratford. Another win tonight against St Ives will make our league record look much better and instead of looking at a lack of wins what will stand out will be that we’ve only lost two games.

That’s if we win. Anything but a win leaves us where we were before so we now need to show consistency and keep this unbeaten run going. I think we now have the players but as we’ve seen so far no wins are guaranteed and most teams are capable of springing surprise results.

St Ives have so far proved to be not the best travellers so I think we can win tonight. I'm going for a 3-1 win with goals from Arlott-John, Thomas and Ward.

Re: Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

Once again we experience the ups and downs of football. What a disappointment and another three goals conceded in a home match.
It now seems that my suggestion that Ilkeston were ready to make a promotion challenge was a touch optimistic. Anther failure to win at home keeps us rooted in the relegation area when a win would have lifted us up the table.
We did well to twice come back from behind but ultimately it was in vain. St Ives made us look second best and no better than mid table. They deserved their win.
An injury to Joe Wilson didn’t help but on a positive note we saw the return of Dan Bradley and Jamie Ward.
It will be interesting to see our reaction to this defeat when we travel to Coalville in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Match Report from St Ives website

Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town

Match Report  Ilkeston v St Ives Town   Pitching-In Southern League Premier Central  04-10-2022

A hard-fought win on the road saw Ives get their league season back on track after a few stuttering performances in recent weeks. But this Tuesday night victory at the home of the pre-season title favourites did not come without cost as leading scorer Jonny Edwards, Tyrone Baker and Kane Lewis all limped out of this game at various stages. Edwards injury looked the more worrying as he left the ground on crutches still in obvious pain more than two hours after landing awkwardly when defending a corner inside his own box.

Manager Ricky Marheineke made only one change from Saturdays history making FA Cup side with Tyrone Baker coming in on the right and Greg Kaziboni dropping to the bench. The Robins, who had enjoyed a weekend off, whist Ives were making history named an unchanged side from their first home win of the season seven days earlier against Stratford.

Ives were eager to show that there was going to be no hangover from Saturday’s cup win, or the celebrations that followed, as they went at their hosts straight from the off with Enoch Andoh winning a corner inside the first minute. That was only cleared far enough to present Johnny Herd with the opportunity to hurl a long throw into the box. Jordan Williams rose highest to meet the projectile, but his header lacked power and presented a comfortable save for home keeper Ollie Battersby.

These early stages were very open and Robins winger Dempsey Arlott-John was already showing that he presented just as much threat as Andoh and Baker for Ives. His first run at Kane Lewis in fourth minute resulted in a free kick wide left that Joe Wilson swung into the box where Kieran Fenton met it well but directed his header wide.

Back at the other end keeper Battersby got an early test as Andoh seized an opportunity to unleash a screamer from thirty yards that moved wickedly in the air forcing the young keeper into a spectacular diving save high to his right. The Grimsby Town loanee was not so fortunate as Ives went in front in tenth minute. Lewis delivered a teasing cross from the right a stretching Marshall Willock only succeeded in heading the ball up into the air Andoh outjumped the much taller Wilson to win the dropping ball and nod it down to Edwards by the penalty spot, he spun and got his shot away but would be honest enough to say that he made far from a clean contact but it was enough to beat the off balance Battersby as the bobbling ball found the bottom corner.

Falling behind sparked the hosts into action and five minutes later Ives keeper James Goff made a very good claim of a ball into the box from the right by Declan Eratt-Thompson as he was under heavy pressure from centre forward Chris O’Grady. Shortly after that came Edwards injury and it was clear that it was a bad one as after lengthy treatment the big striker limped off supported by two colleagues. Ethan Johnston came on to replace him. Losing their talisman did not damper Ives eagerness to add to their lead and skipper Michael Richens came within millimetres of doing just that in 27th minute as he bustled his way through the centre before unleashing a bullet of a drive from fully 35 yards that beat the desperate dive of Battersby but flashed just the wrong side of the post.

Straight back up the other end Arlott-John was again causing problems as he tried to ferret his way through the centre of Ives back line and was taken down by Myles Cowling inside the D. Robins skipper Fenton curled the resulting free kick over Ives wall but just over the top. Johnston was working very hard to ensure that the hosts were not being allowed to play out from the back very easily and he pressurised Reece Hutchinson into conceding a corner in 31 minute. Dylan Williams flag kick was powerfully met by Jordan Williams but his header flew harmlessly over the top.

With half time looming the hosts enjoyed a good spell and it took an excellent block from Williams to prevent O’Grady levelling things up from an Alex Troke cross in the 35th minute. The equaliser when did come arrived in the last of the four added minutes for the injury to Edwards. Wilson delivered a ball in from the right and O’Grady had somehow managed to ghost in at the back post to arrive completely unmarked and divert it home.

Buoyed by their late equaliser in the first half the hosts came out in very positive mood for the re-start and it took a brave diving block from Jordan Williams to prevent Tom Solanke firing home Arlott-John’s pull back after the winger had wriggled his way past Lewis and Callum Milne to get to the bye line in 47th minute. Four minutes later Robins substitute Dan Bradley fired inches wide from 25 yards with almost his first touch of the game having been introduced as a replacement for Wilson only moments earlier.

Having weathered that early second half storm it was Ives turn to inflict a little more pressure on the hosts back line. A 54th minute Herd long throw caused more problems for the Robins as it bounced around the box before falling to Milne but his shot lacked the power to trouble Battersby. The visitors had a claim for a penalty waved away three minutes later as Dylan Williams was bundled over in the box by Hutchinson. The Ives midfielder bounced back up and still managed to flash a cross through the six yard box with no one able to get a touch.Ives did manage to get their noses back in front on the hour with probably the move of the night as they moved the ball around well on the slick 3G surface. The decisive pass coming from Richens who put Baker clear and the Ives number seven made no mistake firing past the advancing Battersby to restore the lead. Ives were showing no signs of tiring following the weekends cup exertions and Milne went close to increasing the lead as he got on the end of a deep Richens free kick in 65th minute but his header was straight at the home keeper. Baker limped out of the game to be replaced by Ed Hottor with 20 minutes to go, but Ives were still searching for the third goal to kill the game. In 76th minute Herd seized an opportunity to get forward down the left and exchanged passes with the hard-working Johnston before getting a shot away that was deflected for a corner. The resulting flag kick came to nothing.

With ten minutes to go Lewis limped out of the game to be replaced by Owen Sheriff and manager Marheineke chose to take the opportunity to try and hold on to what they had got putting Richens in at right back to fill in for Lewis with Sheriff slotting into the centre of a back five. But almost instantly the plan was undone as the dangerous Arlott-John, who had generally been very well marshalled by Lewis all evening, grabbed his opportunity to run at the stand in right back. He left Richens in his wake as he burst into the box before pulling the ball back to substitute Remayne Campbell who teed the ball up for his fellow replacement Jamie Ward to slam home. With the scores back level most of us, remembering our previous trip to Derbyshire this season where we shipped two late goals to lose from a winning position at Mickleover, probably thought the worst. But this Ives side only do positive and rather than sit back they went in search of the winner and found it. In 89th minute Herd went forward to hurl a long throw into the box from the right, as had been the case on a few occasions earlier in the evening the hosts struggled to deal with it. The ball was eventually fed back to Herd on the right hand corner of the box and he carefully curled a left footed effort through the crowd and past the unsighted Battersby into the bottom corner of the net to spark wild celebrations amongst the small travelling contingent behind the car park end goal.

Two goals in two games both excellently taken by Johnny Herd assured him of the man of the match award but Kane Lewis pushed him very close for the excellent way that he kept the very dangerous Arlott-John quiet throughout the evening.

Re: Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

While we weren’t at our best we could easily have won and after match thoughts would then have been completely different. After we’d pulled it back to 2-2 we could have settled for a point but we went for the win. With Arlott-John in the side there’s always going to be chances. He terrorises defenders and Ward’s equaliser came from one of Arlott-John’s many raids down the left.
So after the initial disappointment of losing we have to acknowledge that the result could have gone either way but on this occasion it went against us.
Our problem is that we are conceding too many goals. I like Willock because he’s mobile and not afraid to push forward but would Ben Turner be a more steadying influence in defence? We've hardly seen him play.
Only 442 turned up to watch the game, our lowest attendance so far. Is that due to results or due to the fact that people are fearful of the looming increases in the cost of living. Probably the latter.

Re: Tues 4th October 22 : Ilkeston Town v St Ives Town : ko 7 45pm

Unfortunately, we've pick up another injury against St Ives. This time it's Joe Wilson, one of the incoming players that's made big difference. I think Ben Turner said it was his hamstring. If so he's going to miss a few matches. We’ve been really unlucky with players picking up longer term injuries. Personally, I hope that Wilson’s injury gives an opportunity to Ollie Brown-Hill to come into the team. He never let’s us down.

It was good to see Dan Bradley come on in the second half and he nearly scored straight away. Also good to get Jamie Ward back on the field because he's always going to score goals with his deadly finishing.  As manager, Jamie can choose how he uses himself. I’m guessing that he’ll be on the bench most games so that he can bring himself on when required.

Despite the injuries we should still have enough quality players to win matches. It’s been a difficult start to the season. Before the season started we were full of confidence. Then we failed to win any of our first six matches which led to a change in management and new players coming in. We then looked like we were doing better and hope was renewed. Then we lose at home to St Ives and the revival is over.

It’s pretty clear to me that the teams in this league are much better than we supposed so while promotion is still achievable it’s going to be a tough challenge to finish in the playoffs. There will always be setbacks and we’ve only played a quarter of our matches. There’s still loads of time to put a run of results together so let’s just go with flow and give Jamie and Ben some time to turn things round.
