Re: Sat 3rd December'22 : Redditch v Ilkeston

A superb win today against a decent Redditch team. I wasn't sure what to expect from Lee Tomlin and I have to say he was class. He didn't finish the match but I would give him joint man the match with Declan Eratt-Thompson.  Also outstanding were Joe Wilson and Henri Wilder, I hope we can sign Wilder or at least extend the loan. Special mention too for Chris O'Grady, always in the action and Dempsey Arlott-John always a threat.
No doubt Redditch will think they were unlucky after hitting the post twice and having a good penalty appeal rejected. That was in a 15 minute spell at the start of the second half but for the rest of the game Ilkeston were superior. Fenton's powerful header from Wilson's corner ended Redditch's hopes of rescuing a point.
That's three straight wins and today we were without Montel Gibson, Jack Thomas and Lamina Sherif which shows that we now have strength in depth. I heard a Redditch supporter say "I can see why Ilkeston were pre-season favourites". It really was a terrific performance.

Re: Sat 3rd December'22 : Redditch v Ilkeston

I'd echo that John. Best performance of the season. What a difference Lee Tomlin made. Absolute class. At last we've got an attacking midfielder, and what a difference it made to the side. Bradley and Erratt-Thompson, with Tomlin playing in front of them. For a large part of the first half we looked like a Step 2 side playing a Step 3 side. Absolutely bossed the game. We had a rocky time for the first 15 minutes of the second half as Redditch came out all guns blazing and gave it a real go, but then we got on top again.

Everyone played well, a real team effort. I know Erratt-Thompson is only 20, but where does he get his energy from? Doesn't stop, from minute 1 to minute 90. Real good prospect, and Delap at centre-back is another one. And Joe Wilson is taking some lovely corners, is that 3 goals we've scored from them in the last 2 games? Shame we conceded towards the end, but you'd have to say Redditch deserved it; I think if someone had offered you 4-1 before the game you'd have snatched their hand off. Joint MoM for me, shared between Erratt-Thompson and Tomlin. We have some momentum - 9 points from 3 games, 9 goals for and one against. One of the good days, bring on Tamworth next week!

And what a nice gesture from Dave, our owner, to buy all the Ilkeston fans a drink in Wetherspoons.

Re: Sat 3rd December'22 : Redditch v Ilkeston

.
Redditch's Match Report

MATCH REPORT :
REDDITCH UNITED 1-4 ILKESTON TOWN

BY TIA DUCKWORTH    15 MINUTES AGO

Redditch United were finally back at home after 3 away games on the bounce. For the first time this season so far, they came up against a team they had already faced so far as the middle point of the season continues to approach. The previous meeting at The New Manor Ground ended 1-1. The opening 15 minutes were relatively flat as neither goalkeeper was troubled with both sides trying to get a foothold on the game. Arlott-John had a tame effort at goal that Boucher collected at the second attempt, a minute later King dinked the ball over the bar after Sambu found debutant Gregson with a clever throw in.

With 20 minutes gone, Arlott-John squared up Sambu just on the edge of the area, drove past him and went down under the pressure but the referee waved the appeals away. Just 3 minutes later, an almost carbon copy situation occurred again, but this time Sambu fouled the left winger and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Campbell who slotted low into the bottom right corner beyond the fingertips of Boucher after guessing the right way.

Just two minutes later, the visitors had a corner that was delivered in and only partially cleared, Delap set himself with his first touch and fired beyond a sea of bodies to double Ilkelston’s lead moments after the opener.

As the half hour mark approached, Mensah had an effort loop over the bar but nothing to trouble Battersby. As Arlott-John continued to find more joy down the left hand side giving the young Cheltenham loanee, Sambue, quite a tough time, Matt Clarke made an early substitution as Luke Ward came on to replace Adulai Sambu 9 minutes before half time. The referee blew the whistle for half time and Redditch clearly needed to regroup after struggling for the majority of the half.

The hosts started the second half much better and were on top. In the 53rd minute, they somehow didn’t halve the deficit. A Flanagan corner was met by Ward who rose highest to glance his header that beat Battersby, by the bottom of the left post denied him. Moments later during the same attack, Sheaf curled a lovely looking effort goalwards but once again the left post denied him. As the hosts continued to have the better of the ball in the second half they then had their own penalty appeal as Mensah was through and brought down, but the referee waved away the appeals.

However, in the 64th minute, a corner delivered in by Ilkeston’s Wilson found the head of Fenton to really sink any Redditch hope. It continued to get worse as a poor mistake at the back from Ward saw his pass across the front of the area intercepted and they took their chance. Tomlin played a one two with O’Grady slotted low at his near left post despite Boucher getting a hand to it.

With 5 minutes to go, the hosts pulled a consolation goal back via Sheaf after he did well to keep the ball alive inside the six yard box. They almost pulled back another as Gregson hit the post from outside the area, the follow up was passed in by Hudson but the linesman flagged for offside and the final whistle blew shortly after to put an end to Redditch United’s misery.

A poor day at the office for Redditch as they suffered their third league defeat in a row. Arguably the scoreline was a little harsh, but Ilkeston took their chances when they were created or were gifted to them. If either of the efforts from Ward or Sheaf found the back of the net rather than the left post, it could have given them a bit of momentum but ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ don't change anything. Ilkeston fully deserved the three points as Redditch were way off their usual standards.

There’s no better way to bounce back from a disappointing performance and to silence any doubters with a win and a good performance. Next for Redditch is two more home games as Hednesford come to The Trico on Saturday 10th December for a 3pm kick off, and then Needham Market on Monday 12th December, 7:45pm.

Today's attendance was 341. Thank you for your continued support.

Robins romp past Redditch
Dec 4, 2022

SPL Central     Redditch Utd 1 (Sheaf 85)  Ilkeston Town 4 (Campbell 23pen, Delap 25, Fenton 63, Tomlin 70)

We made it three wins in a row in fine style on Saturday as we eased past hosts Redditch United in Worcestershire. Two goals in each half did the damage in a game we largely controlled, only a late Redditch consolation blotting an otherwise excellent display. And it means we move up to eighth in the league standings, leapfrogging today’s opponents in the process.

The game took a little while to produce much in the way of chances, Dempsey Arlott-John’s shot straight at home keeper Kieran Boucher on 14 minutes then a Danny King effort looping over the top at the other end. We got the lead on 23 minutes, as Arlott-John – who had seen appeals for a penalty denied a few minutes earlier – beat Adulai Sambu who then brought him down and this time a spot kick was awarded. Remaye Campbell stepped up to slot the ball low to the keeper’s left and into the net. Two minutes later, the lead was doubled. Henri Wilder swung in a corner from the right and after it was cleared as far as Finn Delap, the 17-year-old Burton loanee controlled before firing home his first ever Robins goal.Redditch responded with half chances, Ollie Battersby palming away a long range strike from Max Sheaf, then Bernard Mensah Jr shooting over from the edge of the box, half-time arriving with few more alarms for either side

.The second-half, too, saw little in the way of clear openings initially but Redditch then hit the post twice in a matter of seconds, sub Luke Ward heading off the foot of the post first and then Sheaf’s volley striking the angle of post and bar in the same attack. But we killed the game off with our third goal on 63 minutes. Again it was from a corner, as this time Joe Wilson’s kick from the left was met by skipper Kieran Fenton and he headed home.Lee Tomlin had been quietly pulling strings in midfield on his Robins debut and he would get the fourth goal seven minutes later. A mistake at the back handed the ball to Chris O’Grady, and rather than take the shot on himself he laid off to Tomlin whose low shot beat Boucher from 12 yards out – that being the scorer’s last act as he was immediately replaced by Rico Fyfe. Wilson twice went close to a fifth, before United pulled one back with five to go when Sheaf found the net from close range. The hosts hit the post again in the dying seconds through Harvey Gregson and although Lewis Hudson followed up to net the rebound, he was flagged offside and the referee would soon blow his whistle to end the contest.

We return to action on Tuesday night with the trip to Alfreton Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup, before hosting current league leaders Tamworth at the Microlise New Manor Ground next weekend.

Redditch: Boucher, Sambu (Ward 36, Smith 83), Hudson, Flanagan, Wollacott, Flanagan, King, Gregson, Mensah Jr (Boothe 76), Sheaf, Bunn. Not used: Rowbottom, Culkin
