Tue 6 Dec: Alfreton v Ilkeston (Derbys Senior Cup Round 3) ko 7 45pm

.
Next up is Alfreton Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup. When the draw was made, this match looked like a tough tie but we go into this on the back of three consecutive wins whereas Alfreton are winless in their last five with 2 draws and 3 defeats.
Ilkeston will be keen to show that they can compete with teams at Step 2 which is where we hope to be next season.
Jamie Ward may be tempted to give match time to some of our squad players but that should not reduce our chances of winning the tie.  Promotion is our main objective but a win against Alfreton will add to current optimism and increase confidence going into Saturday’s important match against league leaders Tamworth.

Re: Tue 6 Dec: Alfreton v Ilkeston (Derbys Senior Cup Round 3) ko 7 45pm

.
Whilst we are in action against Alfreton in the Derbyshire Senior Cup, there are six matches taking place in our league. Four of the teams above Ilkeston (Coalville, Nuneaton, Rushall and Leiston) are playing against each other so at least two them will drop points. Tamworth have the chance to end their six game winless run against relegation favourites, Rushden & Diamonds who have lost their last five.

Southern League Premier Central fixtures : Tuesday 6 December 2022
Rushden & Diamonds v Tamworth
Alvechurch v Stratford
Basford v Kings Langley
Coalville v Nuneaton
Needham Market v Hednesford
Rushall v Leiston

Now a free kick to Alfreton. Corner comes from it. Deeney takes before it reaches Denton.

Fenton tries his luck from distance but it’s saved. Alfreton player booked for stopping Ward's run. Ilkeston close again. We’re so much on top. 1-2. 65 minutes

Every Alfreton corner is dangerous.  Dempsey crosses and Bello’s diving header is inches wide .

Re: Tue 6 Dec: Alfreton v Ilkeston (Derbys Senior Cup Round 3) ko 7 45pm

Another yellow for a frustrated Jack Thomas.  And another goal for Alfreton. This one seemed rather odd because the Alfreton players didn't celebrate and the ref surprised even the Alfreton fans by signalling a goal after changing his original decision. We're not having much luck tonight. It's now a ridiculous 1-6.

The Alfreton fans near me enjoyed the game. They were saying that it was one of the best Derbyshire Senior Cup matches they'd had for a while. Great support from the Ilkeston supporters throughout.

Re: Tue 6 Dec: Alfreton v Ilkeston (Derbys Senior Cup Round 3) ko 7 45pm

.
If you weren’t at the match, it looks like we played poorly but it wasn’t exactly like that. There were sustained spells in each half when we were on top and on the front foot but whereas we didn’t take our chances, Alfreton certainly did.
The first half was pretty even but an Alfreton goal on the stroke of half time gave them the edge. Ilkeston started the second half strongly and were in the ascendancy until being hit by three quick fire goals. Fair play to Alfreton for taking their chances but it was a night when the scoreline didn’t truly reflect how we had played. In terms of play it was never a   6-1 but Alfreton gave us a lesson in finishing.  From Alfreton’s viewpoint it was a great night when the goals just kept coming. From our perspective, exiting the Derbyshire Senior Cup early could be a blessing in disguise and should not throw us off course in our pursuit of promotion. The match provided valuable game time for Tyree Wilson, Silvio Bello and Tom Hilton and when Declan Eratt-Thompson came on in the second half, he looked the best player on the field.
Better to have a bad night in a County Cup competition than the league and we can now put all of our efforts into trying to get into the playoffs.

Re: Tue 6 Dec: Alfreton v Ilkeston (Derbys Senior Cup Round 3) ko 7 45pm

Tom Denton was a handful and due ti his size and awkwardness we really did not cope wth him well. Your right though 6-1 does not reflect the nature of the game!

Re: Tue 6 Dec: Alfreton v Ilkeston (Derbys Senior Cup Round 3) ko 7 45pm

This is why I’d like to see a lump of a centre-forward like Denton in our team, and why I called for us to sign Danny South when he left Belper. We’re not a big team, and we don’t have a big imposing centre-back who can cope with the likes of Denton, and we don’t have any size up front. These are big weapons in a team. Just my preferences mind, not sure they’re Wardy’s. We’ve been a bit better recently, but you still get anxious every time a ball comes in to our box.
