The top five appear to be pulling away so the chasers including Ilkeston need to start recovering some ground. There’s still plenty of time

When we were allocated a place in the Southern League following promotion last season we didn’t really know what to expect. We soon found out that it was not going to be easy. Our first six matches didn’t produce a win (4 draws, 2 defeats) and we were three from the bottom of the league. Since then there’s been several changes in personnel and gradually our results have improved. We’ve now played 22 matches and the last 16 matches have produced 9 wins 2 draws and 5 losses.
So we sit just outside the playoff positions in 7th place but we need to make up a lot of ground if we are to get into the playoffs. The top five, Tamworth, Nuneaton, Leiston, Rushall and Coalville are currently strongly placed.
Mickleover, Ilkeston and Redditch look best positioned to make a playoff challenge.
Tamworth were expected to be frontrunners and the other four to be there or thereabouts. Leiston have probably over-achieved considering their small gates and large amount of travelling.
At the wrong end of the table I didn’t expect to see Hednesford Town and Rushden but they are both facing relegation and are currently 10 points adrift from safety.
Alvechurch are only near the bottom because they have played several matches less than the other teams.
I expect Needham Market (15th) and Stourbridge (16th) to finish in the top half.
Belper Town, who were promoted with us from the NPL Midlands Division via the playoffs are really struggling in the NPL Premier Division. They are bottom of the table with only 3 wins and 14 points from 22 matches.
Carlton Town, who finished just outside the NPL Midlands Division playoffs but were moved laterally to the NPL East Division are also struggling. They are third from bottom with 5 wins and 18 points from 18 matches.
Long Eaton United who were promoted from Step 5 to the NPL East and have done well to recover from a difficult start. They are now mid table with 23 points from 18 matches.
