Midweek matches this week (Mon 20th and Tue 21st March)

.
Tonight’s big match (Mon 20 March) Stourbridge v Coalville  ko 7 45pm

Tonight there is a really important match between Stourbridge and Coalville. For Coalville it’s an opportunity to move above Leiston into second place. A Coalville win would put them one point behind leaders Tamworth with two games in hand making them favourites to win the League. But it won’t be an easy game. Stourbridge have only lost 8 of their 34 matches and a win for them would lift them up to 7th and one point above Ilkeston. Stourbridge have drawn more matches than any other team and this could be another one.

Tomorrow (Tue 21 March) there are three more matches:
Alvechurch v Barwell
Bromsgrove v Rushden & Diamonds
Stratford v Leiston

Midweek Match Preview
With the 2022/23 season heading towards its final lap, we have a number of midweek games across the Pitching In Southern Football League.

Action in the Premier Division Central begins this evening and it’s a game that has a big bearing on the top of the table as Coalville Town could go second – just a point behind long-time leaders Tamworth – if they win at ninth-placed Stourbridge. Adam Stevens` Ravens edged a 1-0 success at another promotion contender, Nuneaton Borough, on Saturday but won’t find it easy at the War Memorial Athletic Ground as the Glassboys inflicted a 5-1 home hammering on St Ives Town at the weekend.

Tuesday evening sees three more games – all with significance at either end of the table. All eyes will be on the result at the Arden Garages Stadium where Stratford Town, who 18th and looking to push away from the drop zone, welcome second-placed Leiston, who could go joint top if they win. The Bards enjoyed a crucial 2-0 home win against another of the teams not yet safe, Alvechurch, on Saturday and are on a decent run of six games without defeat. As Stratford were beating `Church, Leiston edged a best-of-five-goal thriller at Victory Road against mid-table Bromsgrove Sporting and are three points behind the Lambs, although Andy Peaks` side have a nine-goal advantage on the Suffolk outfit. Both Alvechurch and Sporting are back in action on Tuesday, with the former hosting in-form Barwell and the Rouslers welcoming bottom side AFC Rushden & Diamonds, who have failed to win in their last nine games. Chris Nunn’s men have 24 points to play for but trail third-bottom Bedford Town by 15 points and fourth-bottom Kings Langley by a whopping 23, so it’s getting to the stage where even the most ardent Diamonds fan will have to accept that their team will be in Division One Central next season. It’s not the best time to be playing Barwell, especially when you need points to avoid being sucked into the dog fight at the foot of the table, as the Canaries, beat Mickleover 3-2 at the Don Amott Stadium on Saturday to stretch their unbeaten run to five – a run that has seen them move up to 11th in the standings.

Premier Division Central Title Race Tightens Up
The title race in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central looks like heading for a thrilling finale after this week’s midweek matches.

Superb photo of Callum Ebanks scoring for Stratford (Photo Stratford Town FC)

Monday evening saw Coalville Town move to within a point of leaders Tamworth after winning at Stourbridge and the Ravens have been joined on 72 points by Leiston, who were held to a draw by lowly Stratford Town on Tuesday night. Stratford had the better of the opening half and took the lead after 24 minutes when Callum Ebanks drove forward and fired past Sam Donkin in the Leiston goal. The Bards could have been three up at the break and hit the woodwork through Charlie Williams and Lewis Ison, with Donkin tipping a Williams header onto the crossbar. Leiston went into the break happy to have only been one down and were much improved in the second half. And they deservedly drew level on 67 minutes when Will Davies scored his 29th goal of the season in all competitions, heading a Finley Barnes cross past Liam O’Brien. The game ended 1-1 but Stratford, who are now 18th on 39 points, will be kicking themselves that they didn’t make the most of their first half chances.

Bottom-markers AFC Rushden & Diamonds finally ended a run of nine successive defeats by holding mid-table Bromsgrove Sporting to a 1-1 draw at the Victoria Ground. And although it looks as though Diamonds are doomed to relegation, manager Chris Nunn will be encouraged by the performance of what was a young side. And one of the stars of the evening for the visitors was their latest signing – or should I say re-signing – in centre-back Will Glennon. Originally a Diamonds academy graduate, he was allowed to leave Hayden Road in the summer of 2021 and has been playing at Step 5 level for United Counties League Premier Division South side Bugbrooke St Michael. This season, despite playing mostly at the back, he has notched an amazing 25 goals in 33 games for the Badgers, including a number of penalties. And, despite this being his first team debut, Glennon stepped up to take a spot-kick awarded for handball after 32 minutes and confidently smashed the ball past Sporting `keeper Olly Taylor. The home side equalised just past the hour-mark when a superb pass from Mo Sebbeh caused a mix up in the box and substitute Jack Tolley, on loan from Vanarama National League North neighbours Kidderminster Harriers, got his head to the ball first to nod over Diamonds` number one, Dean Snedker. But the battling visitors held firm and defended well to earn a draw and end a miserable run.

Another good run came to an end at Lye Meadow against Alvechurch in the evening’s other game.Barwell headed to Worcestershire on the back of a five-match unbeaten run which has lifted the Canaries up to 11th in the table and away from any relegation fears. But they were beaten 2-1 – a result that lifts Ian Long’s men to 14th and five points ahead of fourth-bottom Kings Langley. The home side took an early 11th minute lead when Jamie Soule finished off a Tyrell Skeen-Hamilton cross. Barwell equalised in the 24th minute through the impressive Beck-Ray Enoru. Both teams had chances to go ahead after that, but the winner came just 4 minutes from time when Alvechurch were awarded a corner which Jack Concannon whipped in and the ball was punched into his own net by Canaries` keeper Andy Wycherley.
