East Monday 10th April 2023 : Basford v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

.
For a number of years Ilkeston have been overshadowed by Basford who have played at a higher level but following Ilkeston’s promotion last season, we now compete at the same level and rivalry has intensified.

For a long time Basford have been over-achievers but playing in front of poor gates whereas Ilkeston, playing at a lower level have always had much better support.

This Bank Holiday game is massive for both clubs and current form could count for nothing.
Both teams go into the game with confidence after wins on Saturday.
Ilkeston are 6th and Basford are 15th.
Basford’s home record is:      P19, W9, D2, L8.
Ilkeston’s away record is:      P19, W7, D7, L5.

When the teams met previously this season at the NMG the result was a 1-1 draw.

Basford’s average home attendance this season is 300 and their biggest league attendance of 571 was for the visit of Coalville.
Basford will be hoping to beat that attendance figure with large numbers expected to travel from Ilkeston.

Easter Monday's Match Preview

Easter Monday sees yet another extremely busy and important set of fixtures in the Pitching In Southern Football League.  In the Premier Division Central leaders Coalville Town have a tricky local derby at the UK FLOORING DIRECT Stadium against a Barwell side who had been on a great run to lift them to ninth in the table.
The Canaries lost to second-placed Leiston on Saturday, while the Ravens dropped two home points against 17th-placed Bromsgrove Sporting. Leiston trail Coalville by 4 points having played a game more and make the relatively short trip to Suffolk rivals Needham Market on Monday – the Marketmen having drawn at Alvechurch on Good Friday. Tamworth have gone off the boil at just the wrong time. Leaders from very early on in the campaign, the Lambs are now third after following up last week’s draw at home to already-doomed AFC Rushden & Diamonds with a 2-0 defeat at St Ives Town yesterday. The title is still within reach – just – but Andy Peaks` side must return to winning ways quickly, beginning with Monday’s visit from neighbours Stratford Town, who beat Mickleover yesterday to move up to 14th in the table, 7 points clear of the drop zone.
Nuneaton Borough are assured of a play-off place and will be keen to try and finish as high as possible to get a home semi-final draw. Jimmy Ginnelly’s side dropped two home points on Saturday when fourth-bottom Kings Langley left the FCS Stadium with a 1-1 draw that gives them a chance to avoid finishing in the bottom four. Nuneaton travel to seventh-placed Mickleover on Monday.
Rushall Olympic are holding on to fifth spot but will be disappointed to have lost at Dales Lane to a Basford United side who were winning for the first time under Steve Kittrick and for the first time in five outings. Liam McDonald’s Pics have an 8-point lead over Ilkeston Town, with the Robins having only three games remaining. Rushall make the short trip to neighbours Hednesford Town, who are already preparing for Step 4 football, while Basford have a derby with Ilkeston at Greenwich Avenue. Bedford Town were confirmed as being the third club to be relegated after Saturday’s results didn’t go their way. So, the Eagles return to Division One Central after just one season back in the Premier Division. Graeme Tomlinson’s team are at Hayden Road tomorrow to face the other side already down, AFC Rushden & Diamonds, who have found form at the wrong time, having beaten Stourbridge 2-0 with a Joel Anker brace yesterday, making it five unbeaten for Chris Nunn’s team. And with three games remaining after tomorrow, Diamonds will be keen to avoid finishing bottom as they are now level on points with Hednesford. Kings Langley have three games remaining to try and cut the 5-point deficit on fifth-bottom St Ives. And they have a Hertfordshire derby with Hitchin Town at The Orbital Fasteners Stadium tomorrow. Interestingly, Kings` final two matches are at Hednesford and at home to Diamonds! St Ives will want to follow up Saturday’s excellent win against Tamworth when they travel to Garden Walk to play mid-table Royston Town, while Bromsgrove Sporting need a point or two to be safe and they are assured a big crowd for the visit of neighbours Stourbridge to the Victoria Ground. Local pride is at stake at the Trico Stadium where Redditch United welcome close neighbours Alvechurch in the day’s other game.

Calling all Ilkeston fans. If you don't normally go to away matches, GO TO THIS ONE. It's a Bank Holiday and  it's only a short journey.  There will be more Ilkeston supporters than Basford supporters so you'll be in good company and you'll have a great day out. Away days are brilliant. See you there.

Re: East Monday 10th April 2023 : Basford v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

Basford are in yellow shirts and shorts. Ilkeston are in purple shirts and black shorts.

Around 1 o'clock we had a terrific thunder storm but just now the sun is out.

25 minutes to go before kickoff.

Not the best view of the pitch from the stand at Basford but I'll do my best.  We're now approaching kickoff time.

It doesn't look like a massive gate but maybe there's a lot a people in the bar.

The teams are out. Its bright sunshine and a stiff breezebas we start the game.
Ilkeston to kick off.    We're underway.........

Re: East Monday 10th April 2023 : Basford v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

Basford certainly had the better of the first half helped by the strong wind. The second half Ilkeston did much better up until Basford's second goal but after that, ilkeston's ascendency fizzled out.  So a disappointing day for Ilkeston's many travelling fans. We defended quite well but both Starkie goals were excellent.
I thought Lita, Brown-Hill and Wilson tried hard to get us moving forward and we could have done without Campbell getting himself sent off and suspended at a time when we are short of players.

Mon 10th Apr 2023
Southern League Premier Central
Basford United  2  IIkeston Town  1
Two outstanding strikes by Ben Starkie gave Basford a deserved win which lifted them away from the relegation area and made sure Ilkeston couldn’t reach the playoffs.
Basford with the wind at their backs dominated the first half and it took Ilkeston until the 25th minute to test Kieran Preston who blocked Leroy Lita’s excellent attempt with his legs. Ilkeston’s defence was coping well until being undone on 32 minutes by a route one goal. Preston’s long clearance forward found Starkie in space who fired past Harrison Foulkes to give Basford the lead. This brought a response from Ilkeston in the form of an excellent weaving run by Ollie Brown-Hill and an outstanding save by Preston from Kieran Fenton but Basford twice could have added to their lead through Matthew Thornhill and Anthony Dwyer.
There was a dramatic start to the second half when Tyree Wilson was fouled in the area and Remaye Campbell converted the penalty. This gave Ilkeston the momentum for the first time and Campbell and Declan Errat-Thompson had efforts saved by Preston before Basford regained the lead on 72 minutes with a powerful drive from the edge of the box by Starkie. It was a setback that Ilkeston couldn’t recover from and their second half ascendancy was lost. Fenton fired wide with a free kick and a Brown-Hill effort was too high before Starkie should have made the game safe for Basford. Ilkeston had a final chance when Preston saved Fenton’s header but in added time Campbell received a second yellow card and was sent off to make Ilkeston’s bad day worse.

Re: East Monday 10th April 2023 : Basford v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

.
After the defeat at Basford, Ilkeston could finish anywhere between 6th and 10th.

The automatic promotion spot is still undecided with Coalville, Leiston and Tamworth still in contention.
Coalville on 83 points are best placed with 3 matches to play against  Stratford (a), Alvechurch (a) and Stourbridge (h).
Leiston on 82 points have 2 games left: Tamworth (a) and Hednesford (h).
Tamworth on 80 points have 3 games to play, Leiston (h), Redditch (a) and Nuneaton (h).

The battle for the third playoff position is between Nuneaton and Rushall.
Nuneaton  have a 3 point lead and both teams have three to play.
Nuneaton face Ilkeston (a), St Ives (h) and Tamworth (a)
Rushall face Stourbridge (a), Rushden (a) and Alvechurch (h)

At the bottom Kings Langley look like taking the final relegation spot being six points adrift with 3 matches to play but they could escape if they can pick up at least 6 points from matches against Hednesford (a), Hitchin (h) and Rushden (h) but it’s more likely they would need to win all three and even that might not be enough to save them..
