Yellow for Thomas. Good Ilkeston move ends with Hilton effort over the bar. Woakes so close but the ball goes the wrong side of the post. Everyone in the ground thought it was in but the ball went into the side netting rather than the goal.           2-2       63 mins

.

Disappointing to lose our final home game after being 2-0 up. But with Ilkeston having only 13 players available due to injuries and suspensions, avoiding defeat was always going to be difficult. It could have been different had we been given a penalty near the end when Lita looked to be fouled in the area but that aside Nuneaton had far more scoring opportunities and Foulkes was the busier keeper.

Re: Sat 15th April 2023 : Ilkeston Town v Nuneaton Borough : Ko 3pm

Sat 15th April 2023
Southern League Premier Central
Ilkeston Town  2  Nuneaton Borough  3
Ilkeston’s final home game ended in defeat after Nuneaton came from behind to take the points. As at Basford, injuries and suspensions meant that Ilkeston had to play with a weakened side but they surprised Borough who are in the playoffs by racing into a two goal lead.
Leroy Lita put Ilkeston ahead after only 3 minutes after being fed by Tyree Wilson and it was the Robins who continued to dominate in the early stages. A powerful shot by Lita was parried by keeper Tony Breedon and efforts by Jack Thomas and Tom Hilton were just off target before Ilkeston struck again on 15 minutes with a first goal for Tristan Bennett. That was a wake up call for Borough and they quickly pulled a goal back through Matt Stenson. A few minutes later Harrison Foulkes had to save bravely at the feet of Stenson but the equaliser came on 28 minutes. Declan Errat-Thompson misjudged the flight of a long ball forward leaving Stenson with an easy finish to level the scores. Ilkeston hit back with a great attacking burst by Bennett all the way into the Borough area but he couldn’t provide the finish. Just before half time Foulkes prevented Nuneaton going ahead with an outstanding save from Ricardo Dinanga.
The second half was less frenetic than the first. Mitchell Woakes was so close to regaining the lead for Ilkeston after beating two defenders and his shot rippling the net but the wrong side of the post. A few minutes later, Harley Kozluk conceded a penalty after bringing down Scott McManus. Jaanai Gordon’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by Foulkes but soon after, Cain Noble scored what proved to be Borough’s winning goal following a corner. Ilkeston pushed for a leveller and near the end Lita appeared to be clipped in the area but appeals for a penalty were rejected. In added time Borough nearly wrapped up the game when Charlie Dowd’s vicious shot rattled the Ilkeston woodwork.

DATE: SAT 15 APR 2023     BY STEVE WHITNEY
Saturday's Premier Division Central Round-Up
The Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central title race took another twist today with long-time leaders Tamworth returning to the top of the table.
Andy Peaks` side won their `six-pointer` with fellow contenders Leiston 3-1 at the CR Mot Centre Community Stadium in front of a terrific crowd of 1,240 on a great day for football for a change. The Lambs took an 18th minute lead when Eoin McKeown glided his way into the box and slotted the ball past Leiston `keeper Sam Donkin. And on 39 minutes, Tamworth doubled their advantage when Alex Collard headed home a corner. But straight after half-time, the visitors got themselves back in the game when Adam Mills got hold of a Finlay Barnes pass and fired past Jas Singh. On the hour-mark though, the hosts restored their two-goal lead when a free-kick was headed past Donkin by Dan Creaney. Three minutes from time, the Lambs had a great chance to increase their lead when they were awarded a penalty after Jake Hutchings had brought down Creaney. However, Creaney’s spot-kick was well saved by Donkin.

Overnight leaders Coalville Town suffered a second successive defeat, 1-0 at the Arden Garages Stadium to a Stratford Town side who are now 16th in the table and secure for another season. Coalville’s Luke Shaw hit a post with a volley in the opening half but the only goal of the game in front of another excellent crowd of 1,038 came 5 minutes after half-time. Callum Ebanks` effort hit the post but Kyle Bennett was on hand to finish off the rebound. Coalville dropped to second place on goal difference.

Nuneaton Borough are fourth and assured of a play-off place. They maintained momentum by winning 3-2 at the Microlise New Manor Ground against Ilkeston Town. In front of 901, The Robins got off to a great start when Leroy Lita opened the scoring in the 3rd minute.Tristan Bennett then put the hosts 2-0 ahead with only 14 minutes gone on the clock. Nuneaton responded well though and were back in the game in the 19th minute when Matt Stenson netted after Ricardo Dinanga’s initial effort had been blocked. Then, on 27 minutes, Stenson pulled Boro level after a mistake at the back. The visitors had a great chance to take the lead on 68 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Harley Kozluk had fouled Scott McManus. But Harrison Foulkes produced a fine save to deny Jaanai Gordon from 12 yards. However, just 2 minutes later, Nuneaton did take the lead when a corner found its way to Cain Noble to fire past Foulkes from close range.

Although Nuneaton’s place in the play-offs is assured, the same can’t be said of fifth-placed Rushall Olympic, who were beaten 2-0 at the War Memorial Athletic Ground by Stourbridge. A crowd of 688 saw a goalless opening 45 minutes. But just 5 minutes after the restart, Callum Rowe broke the deadlock to give the Glassboys the lead. And 4 minutes after that, the hosts were awarded a penalty which Stan Anaebonam duly converted. Rushall now have to look over their shoulder at Mickleover, who beat Redditch United 2-1 at the Don Amott Arena. They still trail the Pics by 4 points and both have two games remaining. Danny King gave the visiting Reds a 15th minute lead that was immediately cancelled out by Andy Dales. Rhys Dolan won it for Sports in the 65th minute – and they should have been more comfortable winners in the end as they had a 77th minute Elliott Reeves penalty saved by Redditch `keeper Adam Harrison.

The final relegation place was confirmed today. With AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Hednesford Town and Bedford Town already confirmed as facing Step 4 football next season, Kings Langley joined them after being beaten 1-0 at the Race Stadium by Hednesford. The Pitmen’s sixth win in 40 games came courtesy of a 27th minute penalty converted by Stephan Morley. But the visitors had a chance to draw level on 54 minutes when Wilson Carvalho was brought down by Stanley Asomugha. But Hednesford `keeper Oliver Basey pulled off a fine low save to deny Carvalho. Kings Langley’s fate was sealed anyway as Bromsgrove Sporting beat Barwell 2-0 at the Victoria Ground in front of a crowd of 904. Loanee Prince Henry gave the Rouslers an early 3rd minute lead when he pounced on a loose ball in the box before turning and firing home. And the hosts doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark when Kartell Dawkins beat Andy Wycherley from the edge of the area.

Needham Market also won today to be secure, beating Basford United 3-2 at Bloomfields and are level with Bromsgrove on 48 points. But the Marketmen were made to sweat after leading 3-0 at half-time with goals from Luke Ingram after 24 and 37 minutes and Callum Page a minute later.Home keeper Marcus Garnham pulled off yet another fine save to keep the scoreline blank at the break. However, he was beaten 5 minutes after the restart by Revanelle James. And then Anthony Dwyer reduced the deficit to just one on the hour-mark.But Kevin Horlock’s side held firm to ensure Premier Division football for 2023/24.

St Ives Town produced a third successive win after looking like being sucked into danger before that.St Ives beat already doomed Bedford 2-0 at Westwood Road with goals from Jonny Edwards from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark. Bedford were reduced to ten-men after 42 minutes when Junior Gyamfi was shown a straight red card after a melee involving several players. Charlie Johnson made it 2-0 to Ives just shy of the hour-mark.

Hitchin Town enjoyed a good 3-1 win at Lye Meadow against Alvechurch – the sides now level on 53 points in mid-table. Jack Snelus gave the Canaries an early 8th minute lead – and one they held until half-time. Nine minutes after the break, Diogo Gouveia doubled the visitors lead and on 68 minutes, Finley Wilkinson made it 3-0.Alvechurch netted a consolation from the penalty by Danny Waldron spot 8 minutes into stoppage time.
The battle is on next week between Hednesford Town and AFC Rushden & Diamonds to avoid finishing bottom of the table. Hednesford’s win against Kings Langley today and Diamonds` draw at Hayden Road against Royston Town means they are level on 28 points. Diamonds made it seven games without defeat – and it was so nearly another win – after they led through Mitchell White’s curling effort in the 20th minute. But the Crows levelled through Ky Marsh-Brown 3 minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game.

NUNEATON'S MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT: ILKESTON 2-3 NUNEATON   BY OWEN JEPHCOTE    7 HOURS AGO
Comeback complete.
The home side started off strongly piling the pressure on Nuneaton. Leroy Lita opened the scoring against his former club after 3 minutes before assisting the second goal 12 minutes later giving the hosts a 2-0 lead after Tristan Bennett slotted home. The two goal deficit was reduced to just one after Dinanga squared the ball to striker Matt Stenson who turned and fired into the net to begin the come back.
Just before the half hour mark, Stenson found himself in behind the defence after a miss timed jump from the Robins defender. This put the forward 1 v 1 against the goalkeeper with Stenson calmly tucking the ball into the net.
Half Time 2-2
Boro had a good chance to take the lead on the hour after Dinanga crossed in towards the back post however Gordon couldn’t get his head to it. Gordon stepped up to take Boro’s penalty just ten minutes later after Scott McManus was brought down inside the box. Harrison Foulkes guessed the right way with an outstretched glove denying the on loan striker. The man from Boston managed to gain retribution as he grabbed Boro’s third goal in the 70th minute. Despite the goal originally being credited to Cain Noble the league have now given the goal to Jaanai.
Full Time 2-3.
