Re: Southern League Premier Central Playoffs

Coalville have only themselves to blame after drawing with Bromsgrove then losing against Barwell and Stratford before their final two matches. To lose in the playoffs to a team who finished 16 points behind them must be irritating.

I do feel sorry for Leiston who are such a friendly club. Having lost only once at home all season, they looked to be favourites but in the playoffs the underdogs often spring a surprise.

Rushall Olympic & Nuneaton Borough Triumph in Play-Off Semi-Finals
The lottery of the end-of-season promotion play-offs very often have proven over the years that it doesn’t always matter where a team finishes at the end of the regular season. And that was the case on Wednesday evening in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central encounters.

Rushall celebrate with their supporters at Coalville

The clubs finishing second and third respectively, Coalville Town and Leiston, had the advantage of hosting their play-off semi-finals but both suffered defeats. A fantastic crowd of 1,613 at Coalville’s Mander Cruickshank Solicitors Stadium made for a cracking atmosphere for the visit of a Rushall Olympic side who finished fifth with just a point advantage over sixth-placed Mickleover in the end. But Liam McDonald’s Pics, who have already won two county cup finals this season, showed they are a danger in knockouts and started the better. Sam Whittall went close with a header from a corner and then Alex Cameron went through, only to be denied by Ravens` keeper Paul White. Gradually, the hosts came more into the game and Rushall `keeper Jacob Weaver pulled off a fine save to deny Elliot Putman. So, goalless at the break, but just 9 minutes into the second period, Rushall broke the deadlock when a long throw-in poses problems in the home defence and Andre Carvalho-Landell turned and fired past Weaver. Callum Coyle and Kieran Cook both had efforts saved by White as the Pics looked to seal victory. However, just as it looked as though they would see out the game, Coalville grabbed an 89th minute equaliser through Tom McGlinchey, who finished off a decent move by the hosts. In stoppage time though, the visitors almost avoided the necessity of having to play extra-time, but Whittall’s last-gasp header was well saved by White. The extra half-an-hour was, as it often is, very cautious at times with neither side wanting to make a mistake. And then, with 2 minutes of overtime remaining, Rushall almost nicked it only to see Kieran Cook’s effort hit the bar.So, it was to a penalty shoot-out to decide next week’s finalists and it was Rushall Olympic who held their nerve to triumph 4-3.

The evening’s other Premier Division Central play-off semi-final took place at Victory Road between third-placed finishers Leiston and a Nuneaton Borough side who ended up in fourth spot. Jimmy Ginnelly’s Boro side started well but the Suffolk hosts ended up with the lions` share of possession in the opening half without threatening Tony Breeden’s goal to much. But as at Coalville, it took only 4 minutes of the second period to break the deadlock when a loose ball fell for Kane Richards to stroke home past Leiston `keeper Sam Donkin. Matt Stenson was denied by Donkin in a one-on-one situation on the hour-mark and then the home side grabbed a 76th minute equaliser. A Seb Dunbar cross was brought down well by George Quantrell and he fired past Breeden’s left hand corner.
Nuneaton score at Leiston

Breeden then denied Ben Fowkes` 25-yard drive and 3 minutes into stoppage time, Richards` header came close to winning it for Nuneaton. But this tie too required extra-time.And on 102 minutes, it was the visitors who took the lead again when a Charlie Dowd cross was headed home by Tyrell Waite. Richards was once again denied a goal by Donkin in the 113rd minute and although Leiston pushed for a leveller, they weren’t able to find it and their superb season ended
