Saturday’s match against Worksop now has added significance with it being Ian Deakin’s first game in charge. Worksop currently have one more point than us. Their opening six games have produced 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats.In their last league match they beat Gainsborough 4-0 at home (exactly the same score as us when we played Gainsborough.
They were promoted from the NPL East last season, losing only one match and finishing a massive 31 points ahead of the second placed team.
This is sure to be a tough match but Deakin’s return means expectancy of a win will be unrealistic and if the game should end in defeat it will be a massive anticlimax. The Deakin effect will bring in a few extra Ilkeston supporters and there should be plenty coming from Worksop so expect a crowd of around the thousand mark and a tense atmosphere you will want to be part of.

It’s useful that Ian Deakin has experience of playing against Worksop from last season when in charge of Long Eaton United. However, Long Eaton lost both games and got hammered 7-1 in the away game. But after that seven goal humiliation Deakin picked them up and produced a twelve game unbeaten run.

I think it's fair to say that the optimism which followed our first three wins has now returned because of Deakin’s appointment. But for Saturday’s game against Worksop we still have the same players that lost their last four matches. It’s not likely to be an instant transformation, but we can expect the players to make a big effort to impress the new management team.

Wow, what a difference listening to Ian Deakin makes. He spoke last night in detail about every player we've got and who we're going to get, the positions where they are likely to play and what he expects from them.
Deakin's unbelievable knowledge, enthusiasm and passion convinced me that we'll be in the playoffs. He said results and the way he wants us to play won't happen overnight and it might take a few matches but he expects 100% from the players for the whole game.
He also spoke about the inevitability of mistakes in a game and how players react and cover for each other.

The first match in this new era is against Worksop Town who will have plenty of support. Worksop are a decent team so its still going to be a tough match. We'll probably have at least couple of new signings making debuts but these are exceptional players according to Deakin.
Deakin and the Club are hoping for a big turnout tomorrow and are expecting at least a four figure gate. This match feels like a cup final. My advice is get to the ground early.
