Re: Sat 30 Sep 23 : Ilkeston v Bamber Bridge : ko 3pm

Eratt-Thompson is in some pain on the ground. He has to be helped off the field.  He's replaced by Hallam.  Brig remain on top.  Corner to Brig.        1-0.    71 mins

Good save by Yates. Nothing from Ilkeston going forward. Matt Yates gets MOM. That tells something.
1-0.     75 mins

Another Brig corner.    We manage to get it away.   Free kick to Ilkeston releases the pressure.

Full time -  Its a 1-0 win.

Re: Sat 30 Sep 23 : Ilkeston v Bamber Bridge : ko 3pm

Let's be fair, Bamber Bridge were the better side today. But didn't we defend well and Matty Yates deservedly got Man of the Match. It was a day when we struggled to get going up front and it took a set piece to get the goal that won us the game. But let's take the positives ie we defended for our lives and we got the result.

.

Sat 30 September 2023
Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town  1  Bamber Bridge  0
A towering header from Luke Cox at the start of the second half proved enough for Ilkeston to take all three points in a game largely dominated by Bamber Bridge after they fell behind.
The early action saw visiting keeper James Pradic race out and his clearance appeared to hit a defender but fell to safety. Zak Goodson then did well down the right and his cross was met first time by Jamie Walker but Pradic was in position to save. At the other end an effort from distance by Jack Baxter rattled the Ilkeston crossbar before Ben Starkie saw a shot deflected wide. Then a Michael Potts shot for Bamber Bridge took a deflection and Matt Yates did well to re-adjust and make the save. A great block by James Perch stopped Harry Scarborough putting Bamber Bridge ahead before half time.
The deadlock was broken just three minutes after the restart when L’Varn Brandy’s corner was firmly headed home by Luke Cox who rose highest. Visiting Manager Jamie Milligan was not happy because the corner followed a free kick given for what was deemed to be a back pass to goalkeeper Pradic. The goal stung Bamber Bridge into retaliatory action and from then on they dominated possession. Ilkeston were forced to defend and Yates was called upon to make some important saves. After 64 minutes substitute Sam Billington almost made an instant impact for the visitors but his close range effort was pushed behind for a corner. Walker had Ilkeston’s best effort but Pradic was in the right place to save his powerful volley. In the final stages Yates saved bravely at the feet of Louis Holt as Ilkeston held on and despite Bamber Bridge’s greater possession they were unable the penetrate Ilkeston’s mean defence which has conceded just one goal in the last four matches.

Your last sentence is the biggest difference with our team . We have gone from conceding at will to the meanest team in the league . Yes we might be under the cosh but fighting out results will put us in good stead at the end of the season . I have gone from  thinking we got to score at least two goals to be within a chance, to one goal will be enough because the guys are playing as a team especially in defence...

Re: Sat 30 Sep 23 : Ilkeston v Bamber Bridge : ko 3pm

Saturday's match against Bamber Bridge showed that there are no easy matches in the Northern Premier League. What looked like a routine game which we expected to win turned out to be a really difficult game in which we had to grind out a result. Maybe our tough midweek game against Macclesfield contributed. Bamber Bridge didn’t have a midweek game. The main thing is that we came through it with the points and it’s another game with the new players settling in. Ian Deakin is putting out teams that are conceding very few goals, there’s no problem there. But up front, apart from the Lancaster match we’ve only scored one goal in each game. It’s probably just a matter of time before the goals start to flow and the new players start to gel. So far we’ve been dependant on Jamie Walker but Goodson, Brandy and Starkie are all capable of ten goals in the season. We have a strong squad with only the superb Matt Yates currently sure of his place. Kieran Fenton, our best player over the last few seasons is still injured and regulars like Henri Wilder and Jordan Hallam are having to fight for a place in the team.
