Alnwick Town v Percy Main Amateirs 29th September 2023

Alnwick Town went into this game knowing a win would put them top of the Northern Football Alliance Premier Division table. They started this Friday night game with a sizeable crowd backing them against Percy Main who have had  a decent start to the season themselves. Alnwick were a few key players but seemed to be doing more of the attacking and it was no surprise when Callum Morgan put in front with a goal which looked from the bar like it was direct from a free lick or corner. Any ideas that Alnwick would build on their fortune and add to their tally were quashed by a combination of play acting from Percy Main and very inconsistent refereeing. The ref seemed to think the 200 or so paying fans had come to see him as he made poor decision after poor decision and found it all hilarious. Unfortunately the more he laughed the more players from both sides became frustrated and foul after petty foul punctured proceedings. In the end Alnwick just about deserved the win as there were very few attempts on goal after their first half goal. Percy Main will be more disappointed as they should really have got something from the game.
on a brighter note the three points put Alnwick on top of the league as Wallington did not play on Saturday. They will be looking to stay top next week when they have yet another home fixture against basement club Killingworth and if the missing players Patterson and Straughan are back they should on form alone win easily. Then we said this in the first game of the season against Ponteland United and they lost despite having 95% possession. It’s funny old game!
