This Saturday we take a break from our Northern Premier League fixtures and take on old Midland Football League rivals, Walsall Wood in the FA Trophy 3rd qualifying round. We took an early exit from this year's FA Cup competition so let's hope we do better in the FA Trophy. We don't want any injuries because the following Saturday, Oct 14th we are away to league leaders Radcliffe.

In our first season after the demise of Ilkeston FC, we finished second to Walsall Wood in The Midland Football League Division One (step 6). Wood were automatically promoted as Champions to the Midland Football League Premier Division (step 5). We were fortuitously promoted as runners up after Heanor Town dropped out of the Premier Division. The following season Ilkeston were Champions of the Premier Division on goal difference after winning their final match by 8-1 at Loughborough University. Walsall Wood were the unlucky team to finish second on goal difference. Ilkeston were promoted to the Northern Premier League (step 4) and Walsall Wood stayed in the Midland League. After two year’s lost to Covid Ilkeston were promoted to step 3 and last year Walsall Wood finally achieved promotion to step 4.

The best remembered clash between the two rivals was when Wood came to the NMG and won by 4-0 towards the end of the 2018-19 season. An Ilkeston win would have made sure they won the league but Wood's famous win put them in pole position to snatch the league from Ilkeston's grasp on goal difference. But it wasn't to be because of Ilkeston’s 7-0 win against Dunkirk in their penultimate match and then the final day 8-1 win at Loughborough University which swung goal difference back in Ilkeston's favour and ensured that Lee Fowler’s team were crowned champions.

I can remember after the game in the clubhouse, Walsall Wood thought they had done enough to win the league and we thought we could have blown it. I can remember their Chairman giving a great big hug to all of their players.
There were two games to go and both teams were level on points but Wallsall Wood's 4-0 win giving them the better goal difference.

Walsall Wood are currently in the Northern Premier League Midland Division (Step 4) after being promoted at the end of last season.
They are currently 16th in the table and their record so far is Played 8, won 2, drawn 1 and lost 5.
Their away record is Played 4, won 1 and lost 3
They drew 2-2 in their last match against Anstey Nomads and before that they probably had their best result so far. a 2-1 win against Belper Town in the previous round of the FA Trophy.

Must admit I didn't expect to see Alex Marshall back at the NMG.
Ian Deakin must appreciate Alex's combative nature and It does add a bit of interest to today's match although I'm not sure if he's cup tied.
