Ian Deakin demanded an improved performance following the Workington game and he got that but the match still ended in defeat. The goal we conceded was a poor one from our point of view otherwise a draw would have been a decent result. All matches in this league are tough. We try again at Whitby.
Another disappointing performance and result today and many of our fans are disappointed with what they are seeing. It's fairly obvious that what we lack is a goalscorer bur goalscorers command high wages. Because we aren't scoring many goals it seems that we can never relax and play with composure and confidence.
I spoke to several of our older supporters after the game. Their thoughts should not be dismissed. For many of our senior supporters, Ilkeston Town FC is a big part of their lives. They support the club through thick and thin and they feel the pain when we lose. The passion is there to see. They have their say at the end of a game but the next match they're there again.

In recent years Ilkeston have usually had one of the bigger budgets in whatever league they’ve been in
I’d be surprised if that is currently the case
So the squad is weaker. You’ve got some step 4 players which means you’ll get step 4 performances
It’s not rocket science. They’ve clearly decided mid table will be fine and are saving money
Good commercial sense. We’ve seen where over spending gets clubs in the past
But just accept where you are for now and remember - step 4 players give step 4 performances. It’s not their fault. They’re doing their best. But their best isn’t good enough for step 3 week in week out
If the old boys want something to moan about send em to watch Long Eaton!

During my time on Whiteball we have only won one Boxing Day match.
That was Boxing Day 2021 when we won 1-0 at Shepshed Dynamo with a Alex Troke header.
In the 2018-19 season when we won the Midland Football League we lost 3-0 at relegation threatened South Normanton on Boxing Day.
Boxing Day 2016 (the final year as Ilkesrton FC) we had the embarrassing 7-0 defeat at Mickleover.
Boxing Day results last eight years:
2023 Ilkeston 0 Matlock 1 (NPL Prem Div))
2022 Ilkeston 1 Basford 1. (SL Prem Central)
2021 Shepshed 0 Ilkeston 1. (NPL Mid Div)
2020 No match (Covid). (NPL Mid Div)
2019 Ilkeston 2 Carlton 4. (NPL Mid Div)
2018 South Normanton 3 Ilkeston 0 (MFL Prem Div)
2017 No Match (MFL Div1)
2016 Mickleover 7 Ilkeston 0 (NPL Prem Div)

Ilkeston’s current inability to find the net meant that a late Jonathon Margetts goal condemned them to a third consecutive defeat in front of a 991 Boxing Day crowd.
Matlock’s first chance came as early as the 3rd minute when Joe West’s free kick hit the defensive wall and flew over the bar. Finlay Armond then saw a first time volley go wide and Matt Yates had to race out to clear as Margetts chased a ball down the middle. John Johnston then fired over for Matlock. A Jamie Walker header over the bar for Ilkeston was followed by a superb effort by Anthony Dwyer that rattled Yates’s crossbar. Just before half time a Luke Cox header was the wrong side of the post and into the side netting. Dwyer’s crossbar shaker was unquestionably the nearest to a goal as both defences prevailed in a goalless first half which saw Matlock keeper Saul Deeney have a largely untroubled 45 minutes.
The second half was far livelier as Ilkeston at last showed more attacking intent and Deeney was soon tested by Walker after good play by Connor Dixon. On 73 minutes Liam Loughlan and Walker combined to create a chance that Ben Starkie almost converted. Yates produced an outstanding save on 78 minutes but a minute later Margetts punished some slack defending with the only goal. Ilkeston hit back immediately with a fine effort by Tyrell Waite which Deeney did well to tip over the bar. Ilkeston pushed for an equaliser and there was a huge penalty appeal when the ball struck a Matlock hand inside the box. Deeney was called upon again in added time pushing a shot round the post but Ilkeston’s effort in the closing stages came too late to save a point.
