A big game for us and a bench mark to where we are at.
This squad has come on leaps and bounds over the last 6 months or you could say since turn of the year.

I agree Alex. Deaks has slowly but surely improved the team whilst he been in charge. With the current squad I feel that we have a real chance of challenging for a playoff place. I know prospects can change quickly if we lose a player (Cursons) but Deaks has shown that he can bring in good replacements without paying over the top wages.
As you say, the Ashton match is test of where we are right now because they are expected to be one of the teams around the playoff places at the end of the season. We've already competed well with Macclesfield and Worksop who are probably the strongest two teams in the league. Should be a good game.

Ashton United are a bit different to other football clubs. With so many other clubs in close vicinity they struggle for regular support are the poorest supported club in our league. Last season's average gate was only 384 and that is despite them being always around the playoff positions. They must be doing something right to be so successful.

Maybe you can get the chance to ask somebody on Saturday mate.

Ashton United FC created a charity called “Ashton United in the Community”. Through this charity they are able to attract grants. For example, grants are received by the Charity for the training of unemployed people with a view to helping them back into employment. Some of the training is done at the football club, for example; ground maintenance, stewarding and hospitality. Hence the football club's ground maintenance costs, plus stewarding and hospitality provision on match days is greatly reduced . There will be other ways that the football club benefit from having the charity link and the charity do much valuable work in the community.

Ashton United's last match Sep 23, 2024.
Ashton United 0 Prescot Cables 3
Cables Make Robins Pay Penalty
By David Robinson
Newly promoted Prescot Cables ran out surprisingly easy winners at Hurst Cross with two first half goals and a late penalty decisive. The hosts fielded an unchanged line up and after Alex McNally was penalised for fouling James Hardy, Darius Osei flicked the resulting free kick wide before Osei himself cut inside and saw his shot deflect to the far post where Jason Gilchrist guided it wide. Just before the quarter hour mark a throw in saw Ben Elliott progress towards the area with the ball breaking to Jack Goodwin who brought a tumbling save out of Eastham. Osei missed a better chance midway through the half as Hardy's ball sent him into the area from where he slid his effort past the post but just past the half hour Matthew Devine won a corner from Sam Baird which saw Nelson Digbeu's header back acrobatically finished on the turn by Elliott.
Four minutes before the break the visitors moved further ahead as Luke Burke was penalised for bringing down James Foley near the by line and the captain got up to send Eastham the wrong way from the spot. Osei's flick into the area on the stroke of half time saw Gilchrist's bouncing effort comfortably saved by ex-Ashton keeper Andre Mendes as Ashton tried to strike back immediately.
Several substitutions made by the home side were to little avail and Cables threatened again on the break as Cross-Adair's delivery saw Foley make insufficient contact to trouble Eastham and after Francis Smith's free kick had narrowly missed the far post Luke Burke hit the side netting having cut inside onto Nathan Lowe's pass but the points were made safe as Dan Cowan brought down sub Louis Gilboy as he tried to collect Tom Owens' cross leaving Foley to convert again from 12 yards.

Team: Eastham, Cowan, McCourt (White 46), Newton, Burke, Baird, Couto (Lowe 46), Hardy (Bjork 81), Gilchrist, Osei, Bryan (Denton 61). SNU: O'Keefe

These are tomorrows matches in the NPL Premier Division
Bamber Bridge v Mickleover
Blyth Spartans v Basford
Hyde v FC United
Ilkeston v Ashton Utd
Prescot Cables v Leek
Whitby v Matlock
There are only six matches in our league this Saturday due to Gainsborough, Guiseley, Macclesfield, Stockton, Rylands and Worksop’s participation in the FA Cup
Gainsborough are away to Darlington
Guiseley are at home to Scunthorpe
Macclesfield are at home to Witton Albion
Stockton are at home to Chester
Warrington Rylands are at home to Scarborough
Worksop are at home to Kings Lynn
An Ilkeston win tomorrow would take them above Guiseley in the league table.
An Ilkeston defeat could see them leapfrogged by :
Basford who are away to Blyth Spartans and
Mickleover or Bamber Bridge who play against each other.
