Sat 28 September 2024
Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town  2  Ashton United  2
In a game of changing fortunes, Ilkeston paid the price for missed chances in a first half that they dominated. Then just before half time a defensive mix up gifted Ashton a way back into the game. Ilkeston’s domination continued after half time until Connor Dixon was dismissed. Ashton seized their player advantage and immediately levelled the score. It was then Ilkeston’s turn to defend until Ashton’s Sam Baird was sent off 5 minutes from time giving Ilkeston the chance to finish strongly.
Tom Cursons gave Ilkeston the lead on 8 minutes just after Matt Yates had rescued Ilkeston by grabbing the ball off Jason Gilchrist’s toe. After 27 minutes it was 2-0 when Tom Marshall headed home powerfully from Jamie Walker’s cross. From then until just before half time it was all Ilkeston with Dixon and L’Varn Brandy pulling the strings. But then came the calamity which undid their previous good work. Keeper Matt Yates, often the hero, was caught in no mans land allowing Gilchrist to pull a goal back.
Ilkeston started the second period strongly. A Cursons shot hit a defender on the line and a Harvey Kirby-Moore header from Dixon’s cross was saved by Connor O’Keefe. Ashton were hanging on but after 70 minutes Dixon was unlucky to see a second yellow and the game turned. Ashton equalised through Darius Osel and suddenly they were in the ascendency. The closest they came to taking the lead was when Jak McCourt’s header was cleared off the line by Sam Parker but Colin Daniel nearly won it for Ilkeston with a superb volley after Ashton were reduced to ten players near the end.

Saturday’s draw with Ashton United brings us to the end of September so just about a quarter of the way through the season and we are currently where we need to be, ie just outside of the playoff positions.
As expected Macclesfield and Worksop head the table and are likely to remain there.
Also in the top five are Guiseley, Hebburn and Ashton. Hebburn are the surprise team and may not be able to maintain that position.
Currently on the same points as us are Hyde, Mickleover and Basford.
One point below us are Lancaster, Prescot and Bamber Bridge so it’s very tight with seven teams between 6th and 12th separated by just one point.

ASHTON'S MATCH REPORT

Ashton Make Their Point    By David Robinson

A brave fightback saw the Robins of Ashton rescue a point from the New Manor Ground having been two goals behind in Derbyshire.
Connor O'Keefe was back in goal in place of the suspended Jordan Eastham and this became significant as early as the 8th minute as Sam Parker's free kick into the area saw Thomas Cursons' header fumbled over the line by O'Keefe.
The visitors had already threatened as Luke Burke's ball over the top saw Darius Osei's cross from the by line cut out by Matthew Yates with Jason Gilchrist poised.
A minute after the opener Jak McCourt played a short pass allowing Harvey Kirby-Moore to round Dan Cowan and pull the ball back for L'Varn Brandy to put it wide when he should have done better.
Three minutes before the half hour the hosts doubled their advanatge as Jamie Walker's deep return ball was headed home at the far post by Thomas Marshall and Louis White should have done better at the other end than to miskick as a rebound fell invitingly to him.
Three minutes before the break the visitors were handed a lifeline as a long free kick saw Yates advance to the edge of his area and when the ball was headed clear Gilchrist had a simple task to roll it into the unguarded net.
The home side started the second period by turning a throw in into a corner which saw a scramble at the near post lead to Cursons' effort being deflected over by Dan Cowan and Walker's left foot delivery saw Kirby-Moore's header saved by O'Keefe's foot.
Midway through the half Connor Dixon was booked for catching Sam Baird and six minutes later he was dismissed for kicking the ball away after Marshall had picked up a booking.
Just a minute later a short corner routine saw Benny Couto's cross headed against the post by Cowan with Osei on hand to level matters up and with nine minutes left Cowan saw another header cleared off the line following Couto's corner.
With four minutes left numbers were evened up as Baird was dismissed for a second foul and in added time Colin Daniel caught hold of a first time volley but put it straight at O'Keefe after a loose clearance from Bryan.
Att: 651
Team: O'Keefe, Cowan, Doherty, McCourt, Burke, Baird, Lowe (Bryan 61), White, Gilchrist (Couto 61), Osei, Hardy (Denton 79). SNU: Newton
