We’re only a quarter way through the season but the league is starting to take shape. As expected Macclesfield, Worksop, Guiseley and Ashton are front runners as predicted. The biggest surprise successful team is promoted Hebburn currently in 3rd place. They've been in the top five since the start of the season. Our referee at Morpeth told me that Hebburn had a lot of older experienced players in their team. Their next two away games are at Macclesfield and Worksop. That should tell us if they are in a false position or not.
Another team exceeding expectations is Prescot Cables. After 5 matches they were next to bottom but 5 wins in their last 7 matches has lifted them to 7th.
One of two teams that has failed to live up to expectations is Hyde United. After 6 matches they were in top spot but just 2 points from their next 6 matches has seen them slip to mid table. The other team who were expected to be near the top is Warrington Rylands. They are joint bottom with Matlock. Gainsborough Trinity have also performed poorer than expected.
Blyth Spartans who were relegated from the National League was the one team that I really didn’t know how they would do. It presently looks like they are in danger following Bradford Park Avenue's misfortune by having successive relegations.
Basford are doing much better this season under Martin Carruthers and are handily placed in mid table along with our other neighbours, Mickleover.
