After losing 4-0 at Matlock on Boxing Day Ilkeston produced a sensational response against local rivals, Basford United on New Year’s Day. Leading scorer Tom Cursons hit a stunning nine minute hat-trick in the first half as the goals flew in. A worldy from Connor Dixon and a rocket from Colin Daniel followed in the second half to complete a perfect day for Ilkeston supporters.  
Basford started the stronger but it was Ilkeston who were creating the openings. Great interplay between Cursons and Dixon produced a corner which fell to Daniel whose shot was blocked. On 25 minutes Sam Parker found Cursons with a brilliant pass into the six yard box. Cursons outstretched foot reached it before keeper Saul Deeney and the ball was in the bottom corner of the net. Five minutes later Cursons controlled a high ball, beat Nelson Aideyan and hit a stunner past Deeney from the edge of the area. Cursons was now unstoppable and completed an amazing hat-trick on 34 minutes with another outstanding strike. On 39 minutes L’Varn Brandy’s curling cross was so close to creeping in at the far post and making it four then just before half time Basford could have pulled one back following a dangerous Kane Richards cross which wasn’t connected with. 
Basford started the second half with purpose and Matt Yates was forced into an early save. Richards then burst into the Ilkeston area at speed but was outmuscled by Cormac Maher bringing appeals for a penalty which were rejected. Basford’s good start was ended by a fourth Ilkeston goal by Dixon and what a goal on 58 minutes. From 25 yards out he crowned an outstanding personal performance, finding the top corner with a superb precision volley for the goal of the game which brought gasps of astonishment from the 813 attendance. Ten minutes later Daniel blasted home number five from Cursons's pass. Jordan Hallam fired wide for Basford from distance then on 80 minutes the visitors should have scored but contrived not to.  Kacy Butterfield tested Yates late on but Basford were destined not to score.
