Re: Sat 1st Feb '25 : Ashton Utd v Ilkeston Town : ko 3pm

We suffer defeat against rivals Ashton United but there can be no condemnation of the team's performance. I thought that we edged a closely contested first half and we were so close to going ahead when Tom Marshall's header was headed off the line.  0-0 at half time then Ashton hit us with two quick goals at the start of the second half. We didn't buckle and pulled one back through L'Varn Brandy. From then on we looked for a leveller. Ashton had a couple of chances on the counter due to us pushing players forward but we were in the ascendency especially in the last 10 minutes. After booking several players for innocuous infringements, the referee rejected what looked like a blatant penalty claim for us in the closing stages. The defeat sees us drop out of the playoff positions but it was still a decent performance and with a bit of luck we could have got the draw we deserved.

Re: Sat 1st Feb '25 : Ashton Utd v Ilkeston Town : ko 3pm

.
Sat 1st February 2025
Northern Premier League
Ashton United 2  Ilkeston Town  1
Ilkeston’s top of the table clash with Ashton United ended in defeat but manager Ian Deakin reacted positively to the team’s performance. After a strong first half by Ilkeston, Ashton hit them with two quick goals at the start of the second half and although L’Varn Brandy pulled one back, an equaliser could not be found.
From the kickoff both sides showed attacking intent, Ashton were first to create an opportunity and Ilkeston were rescued by Tom Marshall’s intervention. Matt Yates saved well from Luke Byrne and at the other end Jamie Walker tested Jordan Eastham with a well struck volley which the Ashton keeper could only parry. Another effort by Byrne brought a low save from Yates. Then Ilkeston were unlucky not to go ahead when Marshall’s goal bound header from Declan Eratt-Thompson’s cross was cleared off the line. The near miss prompted a period of Ilkeston pressure but a Lindon Meikle effort saved and a Jonathan Wafula shot just wide was the closest they came. Back came Ashton with a strong finish to the half and Marshall’s brave header denied Louis White before the first period ended goalless.
Three minutes into the second half Darius Osei gave Ashton the lead smashing the ball in from close range after a prior effort came back to him off the crossbar. Before Ilkeston could recover they were two behind. Josh Doherty made the goal with a fine run and cross and Osei’s outstretched foot took the ball over the line for his second goal of the afternoon. Ashton went for the kill but Ilkeston didn’t buckle and  gradually fought their way back into the game, A fine move involving Walker, Wafula and Harvey Kirby-Moore  created the opportunity for Brandy to pull a goal back on the hour. A good effort by Eratt-Thompson was saved by Eastham after Brandy’s attempt had been charged down and It was now Ilkeston’s turn to be in the ascendency. In a frantic finish, Ashton could have settled the game from a counter attack as Ilkeston pushed players forward then Ilkeston had what looked like a valid penalty claim ignored as they desperately tried to salvage a point. A last ditch effort from Jordan Stevens was on target but a defenders deflection upwards took the sting out of it and enabled Eastham to save and the hosts held on for an important win.

I was saying to Deaks after  the game that most of the fans I spoke to thought we played well . But that did me at the end the penalty appeal. Looked a stone wall penno , the ref was hell bent booking our players . Especially when our player slightly and I mean slightly bumped into the keeper . Didn't help with the keeper going down as if he had been hit by a lorry ...

Re: Sat 1st Feb '25 : Ashton Utd v Ilkeston Town : ko 3pm

.
I think it was Alex Hardwick who was booked for bumping the keeper and yes he hardly made contact with the him. The ref should have booked the keeper for cheating.
Declan's booking looked harsh too.  I'm  not sure what happened but from what I could see it was a nothing offence, probably accidental, Dec apologised to opposing player, helped him up and then the ref booked him.
Regarding the rejected penalty appeal - I heard that some of the Ashton players said after the game that it should have been a penalty.

We still would have to convert the penalty,  but It's not just a point lost when it's  a "six pointer" match.
A draw would have meant we were 6 points behind Ashton with a game in hand instead of 9 points behind  with game in hand.

MY NPL Premier Division Round Up - Sat 1st Feb 25

At the top, two goals by Darius Osei earned Ashton United an important 2-1 win over Ilkeston. The win puts them only two points behind second placed Guiseley with a game in hand following Guiseley’s 2-1 home defeat against Lancaster.
Worksop stay 4th after a 2-0 win at Morpeth while Stockton moved into the final playoff position with a 3-1 win at Workington.
Hebburn held leaders Macclesfield to a 1-1 draw with Robbie Savage’s team equalising late on through Sam Heathcote.
An 89th minute goal by Willem Tomlinson gave Warrington Rylands a 2-1 win over Matlock extending their unbeaten run to ten matches while   Hyde were denied a first win since November by Declan Mcloughlin’s added time equaliser for FC United.
The lower reaches of the table is so congested that Leek’s 1-0 win over Prescot Cables lifted them 5 places to 13th. The two clashes involving the bottom four clubs ended with a 3-1 win for Basford over Blyth Spartans and a 1-0 win for Bamber Bridge at Mickleover.
Gainsborough and Whitby who didn’t pay are both just 2 points above the relegation places.

NPL Round UP - Sat 1st Feb 2025.      by JDG Media

Macclesfield were denied maximum points this weekend but still managed to extend their lead at the top of the Northern Premier League table.
Robbie Savage’s side needed a late equaliser from Sam Heathcote to earn a point away at Hebburn Town, who had taken the lead just before half-time through Liam Noble.
The Silkmen are now 17 points clear of nearest rivals Guiseley, who lost for the second time this week after Lancaster City prevailed at Nethermoor. Lewis Mansell's double had the Dolly Blues ahead by a healthy two-goal cushion with 20 minutes to go. And despite Jack Emmett reducing the deficit with 15 minutes to go, Lancaster held on for their first win in five.
Elsewhere in the play-off race, Ashton United recorded their sixth win in seven matches, overcoming Ilkeston Town 2-1 at Hurst Cross. Darius Osei was at the double for Ashton in the ‘Battle of the Robins’, helping the home side move nine points ahead of their opponents.
Stockton Town overtook Ilkeston and climbed into the top five after they won a second straight game, running out 3-1 winners at Workington.
Worksop Town maintained a points buffer between themselves and sixth with a 2-0 victory away at Morpeth Town - their first win in four.
Towards the foot of the table, Basford United picked up their first league win since mid-November as they defeated basement club Blyth Spartans. In a game where all the goals came in the second half, the Lions ran out 3-1 winners in Willie Francis' first game in charge to move five points from safety.
Elsewhere, Bamber Bridge were given a boost with a win and a clean sheet on the road against Mickleover, ending their seven-game winless run. Will Russ netted the all-important goal nine minutes from time, helping the visitors to all three points at the Don Amott Arena.
1-0 was also the scoreline at Harrison Park, where Leek Town continued their impressive run of form against Prescot Cables. Leek have now picked up wins in five of their last seven games, and their latest triumph was enough to see them rise above their opponents and into 13th in the table.
Warrington Rylands stretched their unbeaten run to 10 games with a late 2-1 win over Matlock Town. The Blues have subsequently climbed into the top 10 and are now within nine points of the play-offs.
Finally, nothing could separate FC United of Manchester and Hyde United as the Greater Manchester neighbours shared the points at Broadhurst Park. Hyde thought they were on their way to a first win since late November after Joel Amado put the visitors ahead with 20 minutes to go. However, Dec McLaughlin’s equaliser in second-half stoppage time stretched the Tigers’ winless run to eight games.

Results - Saturday 1 February

  • Ashton United 2-1 Ilkeston Town
  • Basford United 3-1 Blyth Spartans
  • FC United of Manchester 1-1 Hyde United
  • Guiseley 1-2 Lancaster City
  • Hebburn Town 1-1 Macclesfield
  • Leek Town 1-0 Prescot Cables
  • Mickleover 0-1 Bamber Bridge

Ashton are now the clear number one form team with eight wins, a draw and only one defeat in their last ten matches. After two consecutive defeats, Guiseley, who were 8 points clear of the rest now find themselves catchable by Ashton who are now just 2 points behind them with a game in hand.
Wins for Stockton on Saturday and Tuesday means they have consolidated their position in the last playoff spot 4 points ahead of Ilkeston. Ilkeston have two games in hand but Stockton have the points in the bag.

Ilkeston have a chance to improve their position next Saturday if they can beat Workington as either Worksop or Ashton or both will drop points when the two playoff contenders play against each other.
