We are saddened to learn of the passing of John Tudor at the age of 78. John scored 72 goals in 219 appearances for the club. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Really saddened to hear of his passing today. A brilliant footballer with superb heading ability. I was lucky enough to play against him at under 18 level when he played for Cotmanhay United and I think he played for Stanley Common also.  His career took off when he left Ilkeston and his finest footballing days were at Newcastle where he played along side Malcolm McDonald. McDonald got most of the acclaim but the Newcastle fans knew the contribution that John Tudor made and he was revered by the Geordies. In his later years he suffered with dementia. A year or two ago his wife brought him to an Ilkeston match and I was able to talk to him. Of course he didn’t remember me. Why would he? He was brilliant and I was rubbish in comparison. But he could remember his early playing days. Along with many Ilkeston people I followed his career and he was always my hero.

Re: John Tudor

I played for Charnos in my younger days and our manager Mick Hopkinson decided to get us to be more professional about pre season training. We were shocked when Ralph Brown and John Tudor turned up to put us through our paces. It was tough and they made they made us work really hard. However it was too tough for some of the older players and in the end they asked the club to relieve them of their duties as we were losing players who could not cope with the physical nature of the training. I personally enjoyed it because despite the fact I had by then discovered drink fags etc I still ran half marathons. John did not play many games for Ilkeston but it was obvious that he would move on to bigger things. Up here in thd north east h did an absolute legend and I am hoping do a piece on him for the From the Archives series.

Re: John Tudor

Well said WhiteBall, and Matchman. Did he turn-up for a game at Il'son in the 1990s? I kind of feel I know of him better than I should... I even had to check his career... So that memory must be about Ilson.
Well done John Tudor.

Re: John Tudor

John Tudor was not just an ex-Ilkeston footballer. He grew up and lived in Ilkeston until his football journey took him away.  Loads of our older supporters knew him personally. When his playing days were over he came back to Ilkeston and ran the Gallows pub at the bottom of Nottingham Road for a few years. His family are lovely.
