I think Ilkeston Town are now 14th in the table. We will need to  start picking up some points soon as I believed we would have got six from our last two games. Interesting times ahead!

Ilkeston slipped to a second consecutive defeat against a relegation threatened team. This time it was bottom of the league Workington who embarrassed the Robins. The only goal came just before half time from the penalty spot and it was enough to give Workington only their second home win of the season. The sticky pitch was always going to be a leveller and the game became a physical battle with Workington the more determined. 

Workington created the first chance when winger Kai Nugent cut inside but saw his effort blocked by Connor Dixon. Ilkeston replied with Dylan Youmbi’s cross just evading Robbie Fox’s outstretch foot with the goal gaping. A Jordan Stevens shot flew wide before Tom Marshall started an attack which ended with Jamie Walker firing wide. Walker had another chance from a free kick but his attempt curled off target. There was a penalty appeal by Ilkeston for a handball in the area on 30 minutes and another when Harvey Kirby-Moore was floored but both were rejected. Just before half time a Workington penalty appeal was upheld after Daniel Ogwuru was clipped on the edge of the area. Steven Rigg converted despite Alfie Roberts getting a hand to it. There was time for Alex Mitchell to save brilliantly from Charlie Carter’s header to preserve Workington’s interval lead in a half that Ilkeston had looked the better side but had not tested Mitchell enough.  

Ilkeston started the second half with a shot from Matt Thornhill which was blocked but Workington were looking dangerous with long balls forward for Rigg to chase. Sam Parker got a header on target but Mitchell was well placed to save. The closest Ilkeston came to scoring was from a corner when two close range shots were cleared off the line in a frantic goalmouth scramble. Roberts saved Ilkeston from going two behind with a brilliant save from an Isaac Whitehall thunderbolt before Ilkeston were close again when a ricochet landed just the wrong side of the post. In the closing stages Workington defended for their lives and were rewarded with a battling win that keeps their survival hopes alive.
