Re: From the Archives No2

How many of you went to this game and what are your memories of the day? I do recall it being one of John McGovern first games after Keith alexander had left and Mark Clifford being sent off. I also remember we plaued in a white and black change kit with red socks that I don't recall us ever donning again!

Re: From the Archives No2

Paul Cox scored for Ilkeston after coming on as a substitute replacing my favourite player Paul Eshelby on 73 minutes. The goal came with three minutes remaining and Ilkeston already three goals down. Mark Clifford was sent off on the stroke of half time for two bookable offences within seconds of each other. We were still in the game at the time being only one nil down.

Re: From the Archives No2

Left Il'son in late 1998 - family followed in early 1999 (when the house sold - Beauvale Drive... good house, good neighbours... but at a loss!). How is the Rutland Cottage nowadays?

Sorry for sharing, but some memories prompted from this post from the WBP 'Archive'. A few players there I remember watching!

I'm thinking good times in the mid /late 1990s...! I expect to be corrected.... How about the proper Manor Ground era...? Rutland Hotel, veledrome...the WhiteBall garden (?).. and, of course, Kenny Burns!

Daley Thompson's few games with us too... I was right alongside a red card when a rival player called him out. DT just nutted him!

If I remember right it was a Burton Albion player he nutted. All of these things you have put most mean we have met at sometime at the NMG and the old ground as well.

Re: From the Archives No2

Back in the day whenever we played a league club especially away it was more or less given that we would have a man sent off and fans ejected for running on the pitch.

Was that against Crawley Town? Speedie had an interesting career after departing league football. He seems to be the sort of player who would have ended up at Ilkeston. He did apparently play for Rainworth MW though!

To be fair we have only two FA Cup ties against Leahue clubs away. And your right first game against Scunthorpe we had tear gas used on fans celebrating Ilkeston equaliser and second we get Mark Clifford’s sending off at Swindon!

I live around the corner from Rutland Cottage, but not been in for donkey’s years.
It should be decent, because it had about £300K spent on it last year.

Up The Robins!

More likely Atherstone Town in a league game

Re: From the Archives No2

Great responses. Thank you.

Talking about Speedie... why do top players so rarely drop down the leagues nowadays?  Do they love the game... or just paid too much...?

Andy Gray turned out for Cheltenham - about twice. I saw John Charles play for Merthyr. And the slightly larger Kenny Burns was laughed at by the opposition, but so great for Ilkeston. Class always shows...

Cheltenham had Cive Walker for a time... Terry Paine before that....
It's a shame Darren Bent, for example, did not drop down the leagues for the love of the game. How old is now...?
