There’s no game Saturday 25th July so the next pre-season friendly is Tuesday 28th July when our visitors are our arch rivals, Basford United. This is our penultimate friendly and our last one at the NMG before the start of season.
Basford were relegated from the Northern Premier at the end of the 2023-24 season. Last season they made the playoffs in the NPL Midlands Division finishing 3rd with 69 points, 21 points less then runners-up Carlton. They suffered a home defeat to 4th placed Belper Town in the playoff semi-final after conceding a late equaliser then lost on penalties.
This may only be a pre-season friendly but matches against Basford are always keenly fought so this will be another good test before our final pre-season friendly at Long Eaton.

Last chance for “homers” to see the Robins before the start of the season.
In our last match against Shepshed, the team produced an encouraging second half performance which we need to build on.
Basford’s pre-season has been going well beating Hanley away 2-1 in their last game. Before that they beat Kimberley MW 2-1 and drew with Gainsborough 1-1
We’re expecting a few supporters to make the short journey from Basford so should be interesting

The signing of Anthony Dwyer has boosted our chances of finding the net against rivals Basford United. His game-changing 45 minutes against Shepshed was enough to convince Tris Whitman that he was worth a place in his squad. Dwyer’s impatience to make things happen contrasted with the slow build up and reluctance to have a go shown by some of the other players. At last we have a player with a bit of confidence.

ILKESTON TOWN FC
We’re back at the Microlise New Manor Ground tomorrow as we host local rivals Basford United, kick-off at 7:45pm.

Can we reproduce our second half form that brought us victory over Shepshed? With only one more friendly after this one, Tris and Aaron should be close to knowing their best team and should be playing them together. Basford are one of the better Step 4 sides and will be keen to win so this match should be a good test.

Much better game than some of the other friendlies with both sides trying to attack. Ilkeston just edging it so far. Plenty of scoring opportunities for both sides.

What a remarkable performance and confidence booster. A terrific game to watch with loads of chances created by both teams. Basford were forced to defend in the second half with Saul Deeney pulling off several outstanding saves. Basford had their chances too and stayed in the game until Ilkeston’s two late goals..
Against Barwell and in the first half against Shepshed we looked poor and incapable of scoring but since then we’ve shown considerable improvement. The second half against Shepshed was the start and against Basford last night, the improvement continued and lasted the whole game. Several substitutions were made during the second half with some players taken off then brought back on but it didn’t disrupt Ilkeston’s flow. For sure that was our best 90 minutes of pre-season action. The big strong second half attacking sub no.14 looked decent and would have scored but for being denied by two outstanding saves by Deeney. Ash Hunter played the first half and showed some good skill. Was the Abdulah who scored one of our goals, the player who played for us before?
At last the feeling of apprehension is beginning to fade and we're starting to look and play like a team capable of competing in the Northern Premier.

Just found out that it wasn’t Basford’s first team. Apparently they’d got a few injuries. Nevertheless it was still a cracking game.
We go again on Saturday at Long Eaton United in our final pre-season friendly.
Time is running out for Tris and Aaron to complete their squad. Apparently Tris has been offered some young players on loan from league clubs but his priority is to bring in some players with experience.
